Book Club Questions: The War with Grandpa

Book Club Discussion Questions: The War with Grandpa

Chapters 10-21

Think about each character’s point-of-view as you discuss these questions. Be sure to put yourself in their shoes. Also, keep in mind what you’ve learned about external and internal character conflicts. Think about how this can help you better understand each character’s perspective.

1. In chapter 9, Mom describes Grandpa as, “not having any life in him.” What does she mean? Why do you think Grandpa doesn’t seem to have “any life in him”?

2. What does Peter mean when he describes his grandparents using the simile, “They were a pair, like shoes or gloves”?

3. Peter’s friend, Steve, suggests Peter use “gorilla (guerilla) warfare” (p. 42). What does he mean?

4. Read aloud chapter 15. After the note is delivered, Grandpa seems to have more life in him and invites Peter to walk to the store. What do you think accounts for this shift in Grandpa?

5. How is Grandpa Jack managing the stairs and walking to the store if his leg is bothering him?

6. How come Grandpa Jack smokes if Peter’s grandmother died of a disease caused by smoking?

7. Reread chapter 18 aloud in your groups. How are both Grandpa and Peter feeling? At the end of the chapter Peter tells Grandpa that he loves him but that they are still at war. How does this complicate their relationship and the “war”? How do you think this makes Grandpa feel?

8. Should Grandpa Jack be angry with Peter? Why or why not?

9. Would you describe Peter as spoiled? Why or why not?

10. Do you think Grandpa will fight back? If so, what will his strategy be? What advice would you give to these characters at this point in the book?

11. Do you think Peter’s parents find out about the war with grandpa? If so, what could happen? Do you think Jenny will find out and if she does, what will she do? How could that impact the outcome of the story?

12. Reread chapter 21 aloud. How do you feel about the advice Peter is getting from his friends? Do you think they would take their own advice if “the shoe was on the other foot”?

13. What would be the best way to resolve the conflict in this story so everyone is satisfied?
