THE COLLECTED WRITINGS OF JOHN MURRAY,VOLUME 4, STUDIES IN THEOLOGY, edited by Iain H. Murray, Banner of Truth, Carlisle, PA, 1982, 390 pages, hardback

This book is the fourth volume in a 4 volume set which contains the theological writings of John Murray who was professor of Systematic Theology for 30 years at Westminster Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania.

This book is divided into 2 main sections

A. STUDIES IN THEOLOGY in 16 chapters in 273 pages

1. Systematic Theology

2. Inspiration and Inerrancy

3. The Inspiration of Scripture

4. Jesus the Son of God

5. Who Raised Up Jesus

6. The Reconciliation

7. The Free Offer of the Gospel

8. Paul's Use of Nomos

9. The Weak and the Strong

10. Calvin's Doctrine of Scripture

11. Calvin and the Authority of Scripture

12. Calvin on the Sovereignty of God

13. Calvin, Dordt, and Westminster on Predestination

14. Covenant Theology

15. The Theology of the Westminster Confession of Faith

16. Tradition: Romish and Protestant

Some of these chapters contain previously published material which Murray had written for the Westminster Theological Journal. Therefore, some of these chapters will be very technical and precise. Chapters 12 through 15 contain a unique blend of church history and systematic theology which are not found in any other writings of John Murray. Of these chapters, chapter 14 is the deepest and most complex to read in dealing with Covenant Theology.

Neo-orthodoxy is not the same issue for us today in the early 21st century as it was for Murray during the early to mid 20th century. Therefore, I have only listed the best evangelical Christian authors books reviewed by Murray which are included in this volume.

The best portion of this volume contains chapters 10 through 17 since you will not find much of this material in any other writings by John Murray. For that reason, if you like Murray, you should have this volume in order to gain access to the unique historical-theological information found among 7 chapters in this book.
