LESSON INTRODUCTION

Beloved, as we continue to consider the thought of God's promise to David concerning his eternal heritage upon the Throne of Israel, we fast forward unto John’s unveiling of Christ David's descendant in the book of Revelation. Oh, what a blessing we have before us as we peruse Chapter 5 of the Book of Revelation. What started as a promise from God by the Prophet Nathan in II Samuel 7 is now moved into its final chapter as our lesson expounds itself on the streets of Heaven's Glory! Beloved, let us prepare our hearts to experience…Heaven’s View of David's Descendant...Jesus Christ the Worthy Lamb!

Now to some Bible teachers, Revelation is a book that is considered difficult and not easy to understand, but if one examines Chapter 1:19, you will discover it outlines itself into three sections so that the Holy Spirit can unveil its mystery and set the believer’s heart at ease! In Revelation 1:19, John was told to write those things concerning “the things that he had seen” (chapter 1); “the things which are” (chapters 2 and 3); “and the things which shall be hereafter” (chapters 4-22). In other words, beloved, God gave John a sequential order in which things would take place in the book of Revelation.

This week, our Sunday School lesson takes us beyond the past and present, to a future time for the church and the world. It is generally accepted that after John is invited through the open door in Heaven (Rev. 4:1-3), he becomes our tour guide and eyewitness of God's fulfilled promises. John teaches us that all of Heaven's attention is totally focused on David's descendant who is the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ! John becomes our witness in Heaven, and his eyes are focused on the very throne of God. He also hears and sees several occurrences that are mentioned in chapters 4 and 5. However, our lesson this week centers on chapter 5, and because of the limitation of time and space, I must take you there now. Let us consider our Anticipated Power Points:

• The Worthy Lamb and the Sealed Book. Revelation 5:1-4

• The Worthy Lamb Slain and Yet Standing. Revelation 5:5-7

• The Worthy Lamb and the Shouting Host. Revelation 5:8-13

LESSON OUTLINE

“HEAVEN’S VIEW OF DAVID'S DESCENDANT… JESUS CHRIST, THE WORTHY LAMB”

Before I enter the lesson, we must know that this Lamb who is worthy is none other than our Lord Jesus Christ. According to Dr. Warren Wiersbe, in Genesis 22:7 Isaac asked his father Abraham, “Where is the Lamb?” And in John 1:29, John the Baptist tells us as Jesus approached Jordan, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” Now in Revelation 5 John, caught up in the Spirit, becomes an eyewitness of how Heaven recognizes Jesus Christ as the Worthy Lamb and His divine mission while in Heaven. With the background studies presented by Dr. Wiersbe and Dr. H. L. Willmington, I want to present “Heaven’s View of David's Descendant… Jesus Christ, the Worthy Lamb.”

I. The Worthy Lamb and the Sealed Book. Revelation 5:1-4

A.” Proclamation.” vss. 1-2

John proclaims his seeing of a seven-sealed book is more literally a scroll in the right hand of God upon the throne. This scroll is called by many “the title deed” to the earth. It is believed that when God made Adam in Genesis, He gave him dominion over the earth (Gen. 1:26-28). Now according to Genesis 3, the serpent entered the Garden, deceived the woman and the man voluntarily disobeyed God and lost his earthly dominion. The world’s authority was literally stolen or fell into the hands of Satan through the serpent (Gen. 3). Beloved, though man lost dominion, the ownership of the universe belongs to God (Ps. 24:1-2) and though Satan is the “god of this world” (II Cor. 4:4), he is not the Sovereign of the universe! What Satan stole from man had to be rescued by God’s Son, Jesus Christ. Therefore at Calvary, Jesus came and secured the rights and privileges that Adam lost, that are ever kept in the perfect hand of earth’s owner – God! (Hebrews 1:1-4). Now, at this point, John sees the seven-sealed scroll which contains the rights to man's redemption and only God's Redeemer could restore mankind! But, “Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?”

B. “Investigation.” vs. 3

A search is made in Heaven, earth and even Hades under the earth. No man was found to open the book or scroll! Dr. Adrian Rogers declares, “When the challenge went forth...no man in politics was found worthy...in religion...in the arts...in the sciences...no philosopher...no psychologist...no military man...literally God shows that there is none able to redeem this sin cursed world!” Remember the question is, "who is worthy?” and not “who is willing?” Every dictator or big-headed boss is willing from the person of Satan to any political despot, but none were and could be found worthy!

C. “ Lamentation” vs. 4

John began to cry, for he knew that there would be no restoration without the revealing of the seven-sealed scroll! John knew that the prophecy of Habakkuk 2:14 and others could never be fulfilled until One arose who could open the seals of the Scroll! “For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of The Lord, as the waters cover the sea."

II. The Worthy Lamb Slain and Yet Standing. Revelation 5:5-7

Jesus bears the marks of death yet is quite alive! Luke 24:40-41

A. Revealed by an Elder. vs. 5

This is one of those mentioned in chapter 4, seated on a throne around the throne of God. He encourages John not to weep,

because the Lamb is worthy!

1. His humanity is revealed. “Lion of the tribe of Judah.” Genesis 49:9-10

2. His divinity is revealed. “Root of David.” Psalm 110:1; John 8:58

A descendant of David by humanity, yet the very progenitor of David by divinity!

B. Revered for His Excellence. vss. 6-7

Jesus is revered, yet beloved! He is the slain Lamb describing His tenderness as a pet lamb and willing sacrifice paid, but He is standing, demonstrating His awesomeness as a lion nature through His resurrection, and note His attributes:

1. Seven horns describe His strength perfected in Omnipotence.

2. Seven eyes, representing the sevenfold or complete presence of the Holy Spirit in Him, which demonstrates His Omnipresence and Omniscience. II Chronicles 16:9 declares, "for the eyes of The Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth...” Thank God, Jesus takes the book to open it! David Jeremiah shares a contrast between the Lion and Lamb personality of Jesus Christ: “The Lamb is the Savior, the Lion is the Sovereign and the Lamb was judged, the Lion is the Judge!”

III. The Worthy Lamb and the Shouting Host. Revelation 5:8-13

John writes concerning Heaven’s view of the Worthy Lamb in worship and praise!

A. The Singing Saints. vss. 8-10

Because Jesus takes the book or scroll from the Father on the throne, those who are the redeemed will have their greatest prayer answered. “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Beloved, earth has hope because the Lamb is able! The total future of all the redeemed is secured because the Lamb is worthy. The redeemed can sing and offer worship because Jesus is the worthy Lamb!

B. The Shouting Angels. vss. 11-12

The angelic multitude lifts their voices in a seven-fold doxology of worshipful adoration. “To receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing” is bestowed upon the Worthy Lamb! The Lamb is David's greatest descendant and will fulfill God's promise to David and bring the world its greatest Joy!

CLOSING

Heaven’s view of the Worthy Lamb is that of exaltation, adoration, worship and praise. That is why I can anticipate His coming, and thank God, I’m expecting His arrival with tiptoe anticipation. Beloved, Jesus Christ the Worthy Lamb of God is worthy to be praised! Like John in verse 13, let us lift up our lives and voices in total praise and worship to the Standing Lamb that was slain, but is alive forever more. He will open the seven-sealed book and deliver the world from the hand of the enemy!
