The GLEL offers convenient, high quality poster printing right here on campus! We use only UV ink, so the poster won't fade from sunlight. Our 42 inch printer is capable of photo quality prints. Please note that most poster printers are smaller and do not use UV ink.
The GLEL will provide large format printing services to Carleton's department of psychology. Faculty/staff/students are all eligible for the discount. The agreement is based on an estimated volume of 100+ posters over a 12 month period based on a 'standard' format. The agreement is effective immediately.
Poster formatting
Our printer is capable of a maximum dimension of 42" on one side: standard poster size is 48x42 or 42x48 inches (but check with the conference you are attending to be sure). Adobe PDF is the standard file format with margins set in the actual dimensions that you have defined for your poster (see details below).
File(s) can be sent by email. Dropping off a USB key or DVD is also acceptable. Please clip it next to the door in 333 Nesbitt. If the file is large (>20MB), use a free hosting service and send me the link to the file and then I can download it from there. My favorite is Mediafire (does not require an account): and Dropbox (more powerful but requires an account):
Price and Payment details
Standard posters for the dept. of psychology on high quality photo gloss paper using UV resistant ink (48x42 inches): $67.00 each**
**this price is based on a volume discount for the dept. of psychology. Price is subject to review in January of every year based on the actual printed volume and current media costs.
Payment can be made through a grant (ICB or Carleton credit card), cash, cheque, or credit card (through Paypal). Any transaction based on an internal or operating grant (ICB) will not be charged taxes.
We realize that the standard print will not satisfy needs of all users. 'Custom' prints will always be available. Group printing for class work using lower quality media is also available if sufficient notice is given.
How long will it take?
Most posters can be printed on the same day that the file(s) is/are received. But there are no guarantees for last minute service. It is highly recommended to contact the GLEL and provide advance warning for any printing job. For example, if you need your poster by next Friday, please email us on Monday and warn us to expect a file by sometime on Wednesday or Thursday. We understand that many posters will be printed at or near a pending deadline and we will do everything we can to help you.
4th year research poster day in the Faculty of Science (in early April) is a VERY busy time of year. Please book a timeslot by contacting us ahead of time.
You will be notified by email when your print job is ready and you are expected to pick it up in 333 Nesbitt. Delivery arrangements are sometimes possible.
Details
1. Your poster should include your dept name and logo and a Carleton logo as well:
2. The 'best' tool to use to produce a poster is a true page layout software application like Adobe InDesign. Many don't have access to this software or the time to overcome its learning curve and will use MS PowerPoint instead. Keep in mind that PowerPoint is a presentation tool and was never intended to be used as a printing tool. PowerPoint has several bugs!
The best solution is to produce a PDF of the file from the software you use to create your poster. That will eliminate any platform or machine specific issues like font substitutions. MS Office 2007 adds native pdf file creation and you can download the add-in here:
Alternatively, install service pack 2 or above for Office 2007.
If you are still using Office 97-2003, here is a tutorial to help you produce a pdf:

3. We have had issues with omnigraffe and sigmaplot figures/plots when they are embedded directly into a powerpoint slide, even when a pdf is produced from the powerpoint slide. The pdf will 'look' fine but will not print correctly. Instead of copy/paste directly from the originating software package, we recommend saving the file to a high resolution/high quality jpeg and then importing the jpeg into the powerpoint slide. This seems to cure the corruption in the slide. We have had similar issues with complex transparency settings in powerpoint.
4. The GLEL is a research lab and as such I have other responsibilities and priorities (than printing posters!). I will not necessarily be in my workspace if you visit without an appointment. Email is the preferred method of contact. Please give us a few days warning if possible that you will require our services. Then we will be prepared if/when you send us a printing request at the 'last possible minute'.
