1. Read chapter 7 then go to the following link:



As Mary-san arrived in the camp, something happened that struck her as odd. After having read the article, what was explained and what might we first infer about Mary-san and her family? How does this change by the end of the chapter?

2. There is a major turning point in chapter 8. Describe what the turning point is. How did it come about? Describe how Mary-san is different at the end of the chapter compared to the beginning. Use specific and relevant text-based details for support.

3. If chapter 8 is a turning point, then chapter 9 must be different. Using examples of the language, explain how chapter 9 is truly different.

4. Mary-san uses metaphors throughout the book to describe her experiences. Analyze the effectiveness of the two metaphors presented in chapter 9. Go back to previous chapters and find at least one other metaphor.
