During the 5th Grade (beginning) year of study the student will:

Hold the Instrument and Bow Correctly in both the standing & sitting venues
Learn the basics of Bilateral and Unilateral Bowing Motion
Finger Patterns/ Advanced Positions
Play Pattern I across the instrument in the 1st Position
Start Pattern II
Be able to play scales: G/D/A one octave
Bowing Styles
Recognize & play simple detache
Know simple slurs
Be able to do prepared lifts
Expectations of Tuning
Know when the instrument is “out of tune” & and asks for help
Rhythms Learned
Execute simple duple and triple rhythms
Ensemble
Play simple ensembles (small groups) within the string class setting

Read simple patterns and scales
Read across the instrument in the 1st Finger pattern

Read simple rhythms from the board and apply them to a scale

During the 6th Grade (2nd) year of study the student will:
Position
Hold Instrument and bow correctly
Learn the basics of internal leading (breathing together, etc.)
Finger Patterns/ Advanced Positions
Learn Finger Patterns II-IV across the instrument in the 1st Position
Including ½ Position for Bass and Extensions for Cello
May start 3rd Position for Violin/Viola and 4th for Cello
Bowing Styles
Learn staccato, legato and Balance Point
Learn more complicated slurring
Expectations of Tuning the Instrument
Learn the basics of tuning
Start tuning one string at a time
Tune with help by the end of the year
Rhythms Learned
Learn dotted rhythms and 6/8
Ensemble
play simple ensembles within the string orchestra setting
Start working in small groups on an impromptu basis
(groups go out, play a song together and then for the class)

Tune well with occasional help when the instrument is very out of tune or the pegs are uncooperative.

Ensemble
Play in a small ensemble at the Solo & Ensemble Festival (or parallel experience)
Learn the Ensemble with help
Vibrato
Learn correct vibrato motion and use vibrato on selected long notes

Learn correct shifting motions in conjunction with work in the upper positions
