Extension Activities for Children’s Books:

The Red Book by Barbara Lehman

Other books/resources for further reading:

Zoom by Istvan Banyai

A wordless picture book that depicts a series of scenes, each getting further and further away. Re-Zoom is the sequel that uses this same format.

The Yellow Balloon by Charlotte Dematons

Watch as a yellow balloon sails around the world.

Book Extension Activities:

Literacy/Language Arts Extensions:

• Have the children vocalize a story. Ask questions such as: Why do you think the boy is on the island? Do you think the book is magic? Where do you think the boy at the end who finds the red book will go? Do you think he will see the same pictures?

Sequencing Extension:

• Copy a few of the pages and have the children put them in order.

• The 4-panel pages show the illustrations with a “zoom” effect. Look at pictures of “big” things and have the children make them zoom. For example one of the pages show a cityscape that zooms into a building, that zooms into a window, that zooms into the window to show the girl. Have the children create such a sequence.

Art/Language Arts:

• Have the children make their own red book. Have them include a scene that they see while sitting in the library or classroom.

Science Extension:

• In one way, the red book functions like a mirror. The girl is able to see the boy looking at her in the book. Talk about the properties of mirrors and how they work.

Writing Extensions:

• Show the students one page at a time and have them write one or two sentences about what they see happening in the pictures.

• Have the children look through the book and then write a story to go along with the illustrations. Have them give the characters names.
