“You’re Going to Hollywood!”

Ok, not really…but as you know, many young adult novels are now being made into movies, probably because the books are so well-written that they know a great movie could be made from the story ideas. Well, now you are going to get a chance to play the role of a high-power movie producer. For your project this semester, you are going to read a book that you think would also be great on the big screen! You are going to discuss the elements of the book in detail to convince others to agree with your plan, and then propose ideas for the upcoming box office hit! Here are the details on how to do the project:

On a tri-fold poster, (found at any Staples, Office Max, Becker’s, etc.) or one display board, you will include the following components which will then be addressed in an oral presentation:

Book

- A summary of the book including the main characters, the setting, the conflict or problem, rising action (the main events that lead to the solution), the climax (the turning point/the moment the conflict is solved or not solved) and finally, the resolution of the story (what happens after the problem is resolved, and how it ends). This will be written, as well as orally presented.

- Additionally, you will include the central theme or author’s message and be able to explain why you think it’s the message using specific examples from the book. This will be written, as well as orally presented.

Movie

- To propose your ideas to the class, you will discuss which Hollywood stars would play the characters in the book and tell why you think so (either by physical qualities or by personality traits). This will be written, as well as orally presented.

- You will propose a location, or locations, that would work well for the filming of the movie…this might require some research on your part! Think about the setting of your book in order to help you choose the filming location (Does the story take place in a city, a township, a farm, a school, another country, etc.? Does the story take place in the present, the past, the future, the summer, the winter, over a long period of time, etc.?). Will it just be a movie studio or green screen (especially if there will be many special effects)? This will be written, as well as orally presented.

- To convince the audience as to why this book would make a good movie, you would have to tell why the theme would appeal to audiences, what age group would be interested in seeing the movie, the movie rating (G, PG, PG-13, etc.), and what, overall, about the book made it so good. This will be written, as well as orally presented.

Deadlines:

The poster is due on Friday, June 7th, 2019 and the presentations will be given during the week of June 10th, 2019. The tri-fold poster, or display board will be used during the presentation to help you “sell” your movie idea! Time in school will be provided to research and gather materials needed for the presentation (such as researching filming locations and printing pictures.).
