East Millbrook Magnet Middle SchoolAcademy of the Visual and Performing ArtsCollection Development PlanSchool Description:East Millbrook Magnet Middle School is located at 3801 Spring Forest Road in northern Raleigh. It is a magnet school with emphasis on the visual and performing arts which was adopted for the 2016-17 school year. It is also an International Baccalaureate school. It houses grades 6-8 as well as two self-contained AU classrooms.The surrounding area includes many businesses and apartment complexes. The school has 966 students. Next year, we will lose approximately 100-150 because of a new school opening. Student demographics include: 51.2% black, 29.6% hispanic, 11.34% white and 3.75% multirace. Our population is 69.4% free and reduced lunch. Our reading EOG score was 48% which is lower than the 58.3% NC average.East Millbrook Academy of the Visual and Performing Arts encourages each individual student to work in a creative, cooperative and collaborative manner while promoting critical thinking through arts integration. The school’s focus this year is on literacy being incorporated across the curriculum as well as integrating SWRL strategies in each classroom. Another goal of the school is to incorporate the arts into each subject area through various projects and collaborating with our arts specialist. Collection Analysis:According to a recent Titlewave analysis, the collection includes 17,107 books with an average of 17.4 books per student. The fiction section seems to be over capacity with amount of shelf space allotted for that section. Many of the nonfiction shelves are one-third full and have many more shelves allotted to that section. The average age of the collection is 1999. The fiction accounts for 50% of the collection. The fiction section has several duplicate copies of titles that are not popularly circulated. Some duplicates need to be weeded as well as some older copyright books.Weed some of the non-circulated duplicate titles; order some new books in some series & award winning titles.51 fiction books ordered. There are approximately 5,930 items. The average reading levels are 800 lexile and 5.5 AR level. It accounts for 50% of the collection.Our 300, 500, and 900s sections make up a large part of the nonfiction section. Each section accounts for ? of the collection of over 1,000 books. The average age of the collection is 19 years old. The IMPACT guidelines for an outstanding collection is 10 years. Some weeding of some outdated, low circulated books needs to be done. The Arts sections need books purchased.The Magnet office has provided some funding to add books to support the Arts magnet theme. Some outdated, low circulated books will be weeded from the collection.The Magnet office has allocated $15,000 for the purchase of books to support the Arts magnet theme. We have purchased approximately 460 books to strengthen our Arts sections. Funding Sources: The school provides $1500 for instructional supplies and book resources. The spring book fair made a profit of approximately $700. The magnet office has allocated $15,000 for new books to support the Arts magnet theme and $20,000 for Media furnishings for new furniture pieces, new color printer, green screen and new laminator.
