EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:

B.A., Philosophy, Boston College, June, 1968. Magna cum laude.

M.A., Indian Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison, August, 1970.

Ph.D., South Asian Languages and Literature (Sanskrit and Hindi languages, Hindu religious literature), University of Wisconsin-Madison, December, 1975. Minor Field: Buddhist Studies. October 1973 to June 1975 spent in Bombay, studying on a tutorial basis with Prof. T.G. Mainkar, Head of Bombay University's Sanskrit Dept., and with Shri Shyam M. Goswamy, scholar/priest of the Hindu system being studied. Dissertation title: The Meaning of Krsna's Dance of Love according to Vallabhacarya.

Three years (September 1975-May 1978) graduate/professional study of Christian Theology at Weston School of Theology, Cambridge, MA.

Project Started:

At Woodstock Theological Center, I co-ordinated, with Dr. Michael Timpane of Aspen Institute Program for Education, an “Interreligious Dialogue on Educa-

tion.” Intended to become national in scope and to last for several years, its regularly meeting core group included Dr. Monika Hellwig (now deceased), former Philadelphia Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Hornbeck, Sudanese diplomat and peace-activist Hashim El-Tinay, Rabbi Joseph Lukinsky (now deceased) of Jewish Theological Seminary, New York, Dr. K.N. Siva Subramanian, prominent pediatrician and former president of the Interfaith Conference (of D.C.),and Venerable Uparatana, President of the International Buddhist Center, Wheaton, MD. Dr. John Borelli of Georgetown University has succeeded me as co-ordinator, and the members of the

dialogue are presently preparing a volume.

Fulbright Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowship to India. 1973-74.

Georgetown University Faculty Summer Research Grant, for Summer 1980. Earmarked for "Curriculum Development,", the grant made it possible to go to India and do the research necessary to create the "Hindu-Christian Dialogue" course.

American Institute of Indian Studies Senior Research Fellowship, 1986-87. Supported an eleven-month sabbatical of research in India, chiefly in Bombay with Shri Shyam M. Goswamy, on the topic "Aesthetics and Theology in Vallabhacarya's Bhakti-System."

A Summer Research Grant funded by Georgetown U’s Jesuit Community in 1993 permitted me to go to India from June to November, to do the work needed to finish research for my second book, The Grace of Lord Krishna. I was also able thereby to bring with me and introduce to India my Georgetown colleague, Prof. Chester L. Gillis, a scholar of interreligious dialogue, during that June and July.
