It has been a 40 year ‘work in progress’ by award-winning artist, Michael Poulton, and draws visitors from around the world. Many people are attracted by the architecture of the structure, and the grand interior cabinetry, built by a ship’s carpenter. Others are attracted by the living history of the building, unchanged since its construction in the 1890s. Many more come for the quirky display of the artist’s found art assemblages and his other artistic works, including paintings and collage. The MTA is an evolving work of art, where nothing is quite as it appears to be.1821 Victoria Rd., Kirkfield705-438-3032MuseumOfTemporaryArtLive TheatreKawartha lakes is alive with artistic talent and not to be overlooked is our magnificent live theatre venues.Lindsay Little TheatreLindsay Little Theatre has been promoting live theatre in Lindsay for over fifty years. Highlands Cinemas has 5 unique theatres with a total of 550 seats and has been showing movies to customers from the surrounding area for over three decades.Hidden in a bit of bush, on the hill just outside the village limits, it looks like an average two-storey house. The only hint is a small marquee that’s largely obscured. The large reupholstered seats, the thick velvet curtains and the ornate wall coverings take older patrons down memory lane and give the younger crowd a chance to experience bygone days. “Going to the movies used to be an event, so that’s what we’ve recreated here,” said Stata. Until recently, the movies at the Highland Cinema were shown using projectors dating to the mid-1950s. This year, the theatres have been switched over to digital movie projectors. The 4,000 sq. ft. museum features projectors, clothing, toys, news items, and technology from 1900 to 2010. The price to visit the museum is included in the admission to the Theatre, or tickets just to the museum are $5.00. (The waiting room is a tourist information office).Kinmount was the third major stop on the former Lindsay-Haliburton CNR line, north of Fenelon Falls and Burnt River; 33 miles (53 km) from Lindsay, and 22 miles (35km) from Haliburton. This model railway group congregates from the surrounding area including from Lindsay, Fenelon Falls, Burnt River, Bobcaygeon, Irondale and Wilberforce. Some of the volunteers are also members of the Lindsay & District Model Railroaders, a club that has some of the same aims as the Kinmount group. The Kinmount group operates informally, but is uniformly focused on the maintenance, operation and improvement of the layout on display. The volunteers contribute their various skills to keep the exhibit going. Automation of the layout’s operation has enabled the guides on duty to spend more time with their public. Renewal of the track and scenery is an ongoing project. The group’s informal meetings are also an opportunity for a social get-together among shared interests. As the layout is an historical display, a constant effort is made to represent the modelled era as faithfully as possible. New volunteers are always welcome; there is no fee to belong!kinmount.ca705-488-2635Maryboro Lodge MuseumAn extensive collection that details the evolution of Fenelon Falls and the surrounding area from pre-settlement to the early 1900s is exhibited in Maryboro Lodge, an 1837 home in a magnificent park setting on Cameron Lake. Changes in the local environment, the built and natural landscape, and the lives of inhabitants are highlighted in exhibits and echoed in displays throughout the sprawling house, Anne Langton Gallery and outbuildings. A busy social center throughout the summer, the museum hosts musical performances, afternoon teas, pioneer summer school, workshops, and heritage activities.50 Oak Street, Fenelon Falls705-887-1044maryboro.caOpen from May – OctoberBoyd Heritage MuseumBuilt in 1889, the building which now houses the museum was home to The Boyd Lumber Co., The Trent Valley Navigation Co., and the private school for the Boyd children.
