Parent Letter #30

April 28, 2011

Welcome back and I hope you had a great vacation! We have many busy weeks ahead of us and much to do before school ends. Please be sure to post the dates on the attached calendar so that you know all the events that will be occurring. Great to be back!

In light of the recent crazy weather, we want you to know that we have an emergency preparedness plan for severe weather events that we have practiced with the children. If you have any questions about these procedures, please contact Ms. Thurman.

Please join us for our next Sherwood Elementary School PTA Meeting on Tuesday, May 3rd at 7:00-8:30 pm. Mr. Perlet will discuss the new Elementary Integrated Curriculum (EIC) and how it will affect your child’s program in the coming years. The new curriculum is based on thinking skills and we will have some fun interactive activities to illustrate the new focus. We will also hold elections for the 2011-2012 PTA Officers including a new President, 2 Vice Presidents, 2 Secretaries, and a Treasurer. A G-rated movie will be shown in the APR for the children.

Wednesday, May 4th, is our first Staff Appreciation day.  The theme for that day is fresh flowers.  We ask that you send cut flowers to school where helpers will arrange and deliver them to every teacher and staff member.  Volunteers will collect the flowers in the front of the school as the children get off the bus.  If you are available to help on this day, please call Robin Bennett at 301-570-5755 or robinlben@

Kindergarten Orientation is next Thursday, May 5th! We will be welcoming at least 69 new Sharks to the tank! If you have not signed up your 5 year old, please call the office for an appointment.

NEXT WEEK is the SGA Spirit Week:

Monday Twin Day

Tuesday School Spirit Day (Blue and Gold)

Wednesday Crazy Hat or Hair Day

Thursday Career Day---dress up in your favorite career outfit

Friday Sports Day---wear your favorite team jersey or hat

Brighten up your day and volunteer at the Spring Fair.   It's just around the corner and we need volunteers with the set-up the night before and with running games/crafts at the fair.   If you would like to help or know of any students that need student service learning hours, please contact our Spring Fair Volunteer Coordinator Mrs. Michelle Dean at deanfamily1997@.  In addition, we need two-liter bottles of soda for the "Ring Toss" game.   Bottles of soda can be dropped off in the gymnasium on Friday, May 13th between 4:00 - 7:00 pm.

We are providing our annual Parent Survey in both a paper format attached to this bulletin and in a computer format. If you wish to complete the survey on line, the links are listed below. The School Improvement Team uses your input to help formulate the goals for the coming year, so we need to know what you are thinking.

Opportunities: Montgomery College Germantown will host a “Reptile Wonders” program on Sunday, May 15th from 11:45 to 5 pm. For more information call 240-567-7264.

Please complete one survey for the school, and then complete a survey for each of your children at a grade level. There is no password, just click on “register” to proceed to the survey. Please do not submit both a computer survey and a paper survey.

News from last week:

Our school was recognized at the National Quest Conference last week as a part of the MCPS Baldrige Award. There is great video on the MCPS website under the Baldrige Award link that features many of our students and staff. The video is “Baldrige in the Classroom”.

There is parent survey and letter regarding the Farquhar renovation project. For more information you can contact Mrs. Jennifer McKneely (Tristan 4th and Brennan 2nd).

Farquhar is continuing to host meetings on the planned modernization. The next meeting will be on May 10th at 7:00 pm. This modernization will affect students in our current grades 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Remember that the Sherwood Elementary Sandy Spring Bank branch is open each Wednesday morning before school for deposits. This is a great way to begin savings accounts.
