Food Drive

From December 5th to 21st, Clifton students will be holding a food drive to help those who are less fortunate. Donations of nonperishable boxed or canned goods will be given to the Salvation Army for distribution to families. Items that are most requested during food drives are rice, beans, pasta, canned fish and baby food.

If your child is going to be late or absent, please call: 1-855-209-6155 or visit

pdsb.

Your support of the Clifton food drive would be greatly appreciated.

Chapters Adopt-a-School Program

Many thanks to Indigo Spirit Square One for adopting Clifton through the Chapter's Adopt-a-School program. Through on-line and in-store donations we were the lucky recipients of over $2,000 in gift cards which can be used at any Chapters, Coles or Indigo Spirit store. The funds will be put to great use as we will add to our library and classroom reading collections. Thanks to all Clifton parents and staff who contributed money to this program or promoted the event. Special thank you to Mrs. Yokoyama for submitting our application and spearheading the Adopt-a-School initiative.

Important News Concerning Criminal Reference Checks

Peel Regional Police have advised us that, as of January 1, 2018, Criminal Record Checks (CRC's)? Vulnerable Sector Check for adults, including those for volunteers, will cost $33; students and seniors will remain at the current cost of $25. Processing of CRCs for volunteers is free until the end of December 2017, with Form A provided by the school. CRC application forms are available in the lobby of Peel Regional Police Headquarters, and at the Square One Community Station, or online by accessing the link on the Peel Regional Police website: .

Cold Weather

We sometimes receive requests from parents to keep their child indoors during cold weather due to illness. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate such requests as we do not have the staff or facilities to supervise these students. If a child is too ill to go outside, we request that they remain at home until they are healthy enough to fully participate in all school activities.

Holiday Concert

Our Kindergarten holiday concert will be held on December 14th. A flyer with 2 entry tickets will be sent home later in December.

Student Safety

Teachers who are providing school yard supervision start at 8:20am. Children should NOT be arriving at school before that time. School yard supervision ends at 3:10pm. Students should be picked up from school by this time.

Mission Statement: At Clifton Public School all members of our Learning Community (students, staff and parents) will work together in a safe and caring environment to achieve their personal best (academically, socially, and emotionally).

School Success Updates

The Clifton staff have been busy with various professional learning opportunities and activities to support student and school success. The following is an outline of what has been happening:

Literacy: Our Grade 1 teachers have been participating in a board professional development opportunity focused on building early reading strategies and Mrs. Bal has worked diligently to organize the LLI reading materials for all of our staff to easily access to support their students.

Numeracy: Several Clifton staff members were fortunate to attend professional development sessions related to a new resource called PRIME. Grade 4 teachers also continued their learning with regards to the MathUp program that is being used at the school and several `lunch and learn' sessions have been planned to continue our work on supporting students in the area of problem-solving in Math.

Climate: Mrs. Inkster and Mrs. Vallieres attended a Peel board workshop related to well-being and inclusion and will share their learning with their colleagues at an upcoming staff meeting. Mr. Nowak, our Behaviour Teaching Assistant, is also training students in some of our junior classes to serve as Peer Mediators on the playground.

Winter bus safety

The following winter school bus safety tips will help to keep your child safe throughout the winter months.

Allow extra time to get to your bus stop.

Wear bright clothing so the bus can see you in the early morning and late evening. Stand away from where the bus stops. Buses need extra room to stop when there is snow

and ice.

Use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus to prevent slipping on wet or icy steps or road surfaces.

Dress properly--winter clothing, hats, and boots will keep you warm.

Don't throw snowballs at the bus or other children waiting for the bus.

Don't slide on the snow or ice patches in driveways or on the street.

Don't push or shove around the bus. Someone could fall down on the ice and get hurt.

On very rare occasions, buses are late because of weather conditions or mechanical problems. Talk to your child about what to do if the bus is late. Here are some suggestions:

When possible, wait with your child for the bus.

Make sure your child knows a phone number where he can reach you or another trusted adult.

Teach your child how and where to get help. Talk to your child about what a "safe" stranger is.

Help your child set up a bus stop buddy system so your child has someone to wait with for the bus.

EQAO Scores

Student results on EQAO

assessments are an impor-

tant source of information about student strengths and ar-

eas for improvement. As a school community, we use them

along with other information, to guide school improvement

initiatives. The testing results are also used by our school

board and the Ministry of Education to direct support

where needed. Red Willow's EQAO results from the

2011-2012 school year are as follows (percentage of

students achieving at levels 3 and 4):

Reading: 66%

Writing: 70%

Mathematics: 77%.

We are proud of our students results!

Litterless Lunch

To continue to encourage the use of litter-less lunches, Clifton will be having a blitz from December 4th to 22nd. Students are asked to bring in litterless lunches everyday. Reusable containers and water bottles are strongly encouraged to be used to help support our litterless lunch challenge and help save our environment.
