Strategies for Dealing with Unacceptable Behaviour

"Schools provide a social context in which students need to be supported while being taught how to accept responsibility for their own behavior. DECS, school communities, services and agencies will work together to create learning communities which are safe, inclusive, conducive to learning and free from harassment and bullying” (DEC School Discipline March 2007)

Student self control and discipline at Beecroft Public School is sought through positive means. At the commencement of the school year every class teacher is expected to develop, display and regularly reinforce a set of class responsibilities and expectations

Unacceptable student behaviours are managed and recorded on Sentral, in the first instance by the teacher responsible. Depending on the nature or frequency, continuing unacceptable behaviour is referred to the Stage Supervisor. If the matter remains unresolved, it will be referred to relevant members of the school executive. Parental involvement in determining management strategies is actively sought.

Unacceptable Playground Behaviour

• Initially, the duty teacher and student negotiate an acceptable solution. Teachers are encouraged to utilize the ‘time out / thinking seat’ strategy to encourage students to reflect on their actions (Silver seats outside staffroom)

• For recurring or serious misbehavior, the duty teacher personally informs the class teacher, and Assistant Principal.

• A record of serious/unacceptable behaviour to be documented in the welfare section on Sentral by teacher who witnessed the incident, notifying (tagging) class teacher and the Assistant Principal for that stage. Tracking incidents is important for monitoring patterns of behaviour.

• The sequence of consequences outlined above will be adapted for serious or consistent offenders.

Appropriate corrective measures include

• Discussion with teacher in charge.

• Explanation of expected behaviour & appropriate verbal direction, caution or reprimand as required.

• Loss of privilege - e.g. time out, no play, restricted play areas. Class teacher informed.

• Recompense for damage / loss.

Consequences for serious or frequent unacceptable behaviour

If inappropriate behaviour is of a serious nature or occurs frequently, the ensuing procedure is followed:

• Report incident to class teacher and Assistant Principal. Incident to be documented using the BPS Welfare Program on Sentral.

• Executive intervention - K/2 - DP, 3/6 - DP.

• Principal informed.

• Parents informed in writing.

• Conference with parents, principal and counsellor.

• Formal caution outlining possibility of suspension.

• Suspension - as per DEC Guidelines
