Linguistics ENGL 2351

This course introduces Linguistics, clarifies its nature, aims and its relations to other social disciplines. The course also aims at acquainting the students with the nature of human language, its characteristics and components. Furthermore, it refers very briefly to the different types of schools of linguistics, mainly the Chomskian school “Transformational-generative grammar”.

Week 1 & 2:

Introduction on language and linguistics.

Week 3:

Phonetics & phonology.

Week 4 & 5:

Morphology.

Week 6 & 7:

Lexicology, word formation process.

Week 8 & 9:

Syntax

Week 10 & 11:

Semantics.

Week 12:

Schools of Linguistics in the 20thC.

Week 13 & 14:

Branches of Linguistics.

Course Objectives:

On completing this course, the students will be able to do the following:

I. Be acquainted with the nature, functions, and structure of human language through a theoretical study of those aspects with special reference to English and Arabic

II. Carry out the necessary analysis of the four language systems: phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic .

III. Show familiarity with the braches of linguistics.

Drama ENGL 4366

A further course in drama which involves a detailed study of the elements of drama. Particular attention is paid to the major types of drama: tragedy, comedy and satire. Selected modern plays are analysed.

Week 1 & 2:

- Introduction on Drama.

- Definition of Drama.

Week 3 & 4:

- Types of Drama.

- Comedy, Tragedy and others.

Week 5:

- Introducing the major playwrights in Modern Drama.

Week 6,7,8,9 & 10:

- Studying Pygmalion by G.B. Shaw in details as a major text.

Week 11,12,13 &14:

- Studying Death of A Salesman by Arthur Miller in details.
