OPENING TITLE SEQUENCE

Fade In:

EXT. JUMBO JET IN FLIGHT - STOCK - DAY

Stock footage of an airliner in flight at cruising altitude.

CUT TO:

INT. JUMBO JET IN FLIGHT - DAY

The passenger compartment is full to capacity. We see adults and children relaxing and enjoying the flight as busy flight attendants tend to their needs.

CUT TO:

EXT. SMALL BOAT - DAY

We see a lone figure from behind as he raises a CELLULAR PHONE to his ear.

V.O.

My bank received the wire transfer this morning. Your order will be filled in sixty seconds. Please feel free to call us anytime. We're always open. Have a nice day.

We hear the touch-tone as the telephone disconnects. We see CHARLES VINCENT GAULT for the first time as he turns to the henchmen next to him. Gault is mid-40’s and well built. A rugged looking man.

GAULT

You may execute the program SERGEANT.

We see the Sergeant as he begins pushing buttons on a LAPTOP COMPUTER connected to a DEW (Directed Energy Weapon).

ANGLE ON

Completing the entering of the sequence string, the Sergeant stands poised and ready with his finger over the enter key on the computer keyboard.

SERGEANT

Ready sir.

GAULT

Proceed.

The Sergeant presses a button on the computer.

CUT TO:

INT. JUMBO JET IN FLIGHT - COCKPIT - DAY

We see the pilot, co-pilot and flight engineer drinking coffee and busily going over charts and other paperwork. SUDDENLY THE PLANE SHUDDERS VIOLENTLY. Alarms sound throughout the cockpit as the plane begins a steep dive toward oblivion. The pilot lunges toward the controls as the flight crew swings into action.

PILOT

What the Fu..

INSERT

The passenger compartment is in chaos with screaming and panicked passengers.

The flight crew frantically tries to save the plane as it spirals downward.

EXT. SMALL BOAT - DAY

Gault turns from watching the jet’s flight through his BINOCULARS and faces the Sergeant with a questioning look.

SERGEANT

The pulse has initiated an onboard computer malfunction sir. All electrical circuits are overloading.

Gault resumes looking through his binoculars at the plane.

GAULT

Don't you just love electricity. Very well. Proceed sergeant.

The Sergeant begins pushing more buttons on the computer.

CUT TO:

INT. JUMBO JET COCKPIT - DAY

CU on the Pilot’s face filled with strain and concentration as he screams out orders to be heard over the alarms.

PILOT

(to co-pilot)

Give me 20 degrees flaps...Back off the throttles about 15 percent.

The nose of the jet begins to rise back to normal. A look of relief sweeps over the flight crew’s faces.

PILOT

That a girl...Come on baby...Come on.

The pilot begins to relax somewhat as the plane responds to his efforts.

CUT TO:

EXT. SMALL BOAT - DAY

The Sergeant finishes entering the data into the computer.

SERGEANT

The sequence is completed sir.

The sergeant pushes a key on the laptop. Gault continues watching skyward through his binoculars.

GAULT

It shouldn't be long now.

CUT TO:

INT. JUMBO JET - COCKPIT - DAY

The Pilot mutters aloud as he strains to recover control of the aircraft.

PILOT

Alright baby...That’s it. You sweet thing...I knew you wouldn’t let me down...Now just a little more...Atta girl...I knew you could..

CUT TO:

PULL BACK TO REVEAL

A flashy red sports car as it speeds away from camera and down a deserted street.

EXT. CITY STREETS - DAY

The red sports car speeds along the deserted streets.

INSERT CU - We see the driver, TYLER MCGEE. Mid-30's, short cropped hair, solidly built, handsome but not pretty.

ROLL OPENING CREDITS

EXT. MILITARY BASE MAIN GATE - DAY

An armed GUARD stands at the gate admitting vehicles one at a time. Tyler stops at the gate, displays his I.D. and is granted entry.

INSERT - DRIVING SHOT

Tyler drives his car on the base.

EXT. INTELLIGENCE OFFICE - DAY

We see Tyler’s car stop out in front. Tyler briefly looks at the front of the building and takes a deep breath before exiting. He slowly walks toward the entrance.

TYLER

Here we go again.

INSERT - ECU

Tyler inserts his identification card into a HIGH TECH CARD READER SYSTEM WITH RETINAL SCANNER. A light on the panel turns from red to green. Tyler then puts his eye up to the scanner.

ECU ON TYLER'S EYE AT SCANNER

Multiple red lasers scan Tyler's eyeball. We hear the door mechanism unlock o.s.

INT. CROSS' OFFICE - ESTABLISHING - DAY

COLONEL BENJAMIN CROSS, early fifties, graying hair, older but still in good shape, is talking on the phone.

CROSS

Thank you sergeant. Keep me informed.

Cross hangs up the phone. The desk intercom activates.

V.O.

(intercom)

Colonel...Major McGee is here sir.

Cross presses the intercom button.

CROSS

(Sternly)

Very well. Send him in.

Cross chomps on his cigar as he waits for Tyler.

INT. INTELLIGENCE OFFICE - DAY

A Female STAFF SERGEANT sits at a desk just inside the front door.

STAFF SERGEANT

Please go right in sir. Colonel Cross is expecting you.

Various uniformed personnel walk back and forth through the scene as Tyler makes his way around several desks. The b.g. is filled with HI-TECH COMMUNICATIONS and SATELLITE MONITORING EQUIPMENT.

A door opens at the far side of the office and Cross walks into the room and over to a desk where he drops off a few papers before looking up to see Tyler coming toward him.

CROSS

(smiling)

Well I’ll be god damned. Tyler...Tyler McGee.

Tyler smiles slightly and walks over to Cross. The two men shake hands and walk into Cross’ office. Cross puts an arm around Tyler's shoulder as they go inside.

INT. COLONEL’S OFFICE - DAY

Cross closes the door. The two men stand looking at one another for a brief moment. Cross smiles at Tyler and claps him on both shoulders. Cross smiles.

CROSS

What the hell happened down there in Honduras last month?

TYLER

My orders were to interdict all drug traffic in my assigned area and I believe we did just that sir.

CROSS

I understand that Major but eleven dead bad guys attracts alot of attention. Unwanted attention I might add, even in a shithole like that. Hell, the Pentagon had a shit fit, as you well know.

TYLER

Sorry about that Colonel but as I told the de-brief team, we either did them or they were going to do us. Intelligence reports made no indication that Cartel units were operating in that AO. I had a team to protect and once they opened fire I went for it. It's all in the report.

CROSS

Well, you must have hit the right assholes, that area's still clean.

Cross shakes his head wearily before he motions toward the empty chair in front of his desk.

CROSS

Have a seat T. I'm about to give you a chance to redeem yourself. At least in the eyes of the big brass.

Tyler drops his bag by the desk before easing into the comfortable chair next to him. Cross drops into the chair behind the desk and looks at Tyler.

CROSS

How long has it been? Two years? No, I guess it’s been three. God damn it's good to see you.

TYLER

Thanks Ben. It’s good to see you too. So what's up?

CROSS

Same old T. Cut to the chase. No bullshit.

(pause)

Okay.

Cross opens a desk drawer, picks out a FILE FOLDER marked SECRET-EYES ONLY and hands it across the desk to Tyler. Tyler opens the folder.

CROSS

You may remember Charles Vincent Gault.

Cross hands Tyler a photo and dossier file.

TYLER

Yeah, I remember him. He ratted out my team in Iraq. I lost two good men.

CROSS

Well...We now know for certain that Gault was responsible for that as well as selling out other members of his own unit in Central America.

(pause)

Cross adjusts himself in his seat.

CROSS

He went into business for himself by making deals with the Cartel in Colombia. Then he sold information about the Cartel to the government.

(pause)

CROSS

Seems these days mister Gault is running his own version of Let’s Make A Deal... It’s terrorism for hire and he’s recruited former spec ops personnel from all over the world as his mercenaries. He pays them a fortune and they do what he says.

INSERT CU ON TYLER

TYLER

Where is Gault now?

Cross stands up from the desk, moves close to Tyler and re-seats himself on the corner of the desk.

CROSS

We believe that Gault and his crew, including one Laura Winslow, were responsible for over fifty terrorist attacks throughout the world within the last eighteen months. Gault plans the attacks, finds a buyer, usually one of our oily friends in the Middle East, gets his money up front and then he pulls it off.

(pause)

Cross lights a cigar, offers one to Tyler but he declines.

CROSS

(continuing)

He appears to be creating a market for his services with virtually every enemy the United States has. We believe he was responsible for the bomb blast that took out those four Rangers in Germany last month.

(pause)

Tyler looks up.

TYLER

Who's this Laura Winslow? and how does she fit in?

CROSS

She's a wealthy British socialite. Deceased parents left her a fortune.

TYLER

So what's she doing with Gault?

CROSS

Our intelligence reports that she met Gault in Uzbekistan last year. We know he was setting up that bombing there but she was touring refugee camps. You know, slumming after donating.

TYLER

So what got 'em together?

CROSS

Reports from both MI five and GSG9 indicate that she may be investing heavily in the arms market and then arranging for those arms to make their way into terrorist hands. You know how it is T, one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.

TYLER

Yeah. So, what's this chick's story?

CROSS

She's a thrill seeker. Little rich bitch got bored in school. Parents died in a small plane crash under questionable circumstances. Gault found, seduced and mentored her into a real piece of work. We know she's executed at least five people in Europe. She likes to make a real mess. Gets a sexual thrill out of dumping folks.

Tyler briefly studies her photograph.

CROSS

Make no mistake, she's a cold blooded killer and a target imperative. If you have a shot on her, take it.

TYLER

So what's the job, sir?

CROSS

A Green Light sanction. We take him anywhere and anyway we can. I thought you might like to be the one.

TYLER

You thought right.

CROSS

Gault is hooked into almost every intellignce network around so we can't risk using an active detachment. You have authorization to take anyone you need from any SOCOM unit to fill out your team.

Cross stands up and sits down behind his desk.

CROSS

You will pick your team quietly while we search for Gault. We believe he's still operating out of Lisbon. When you complete your team, we'll begin insertion planning. Any questions?

Tyler stands up and starts to leave.

TYLER

I’ll be in your office for the Intel reports at 2100 hours. I need to make a few calls first.

CROSS

Remember Tyler...Gault ran the Infiltration Cell for us once. He knows every shipyard and military base from here to Portugal. That was his job. To find weaknesses in our security.

TYLER

Yeah.., This outta be interesting.

Tyler turns and walks away leaving Cross looking after him.

CROSS

Come on T,...You’re gonna love this one.

Tyler just walks away but gives a half hearted wave backward without looking.

TYLER

See you tonight...sir.

EXT. HILLSIDE - NIGHT

We see two men laying down just below the top of the hill. FINCH is peering through a laser range finder, while HASKINS looks through binoculars. Finch is nervous.

FINCH

I got nine hundred thirty seven meters to that painted corner of the first building.

HASKINS

Roger that.

Haskins lowers his binoculars and writes down the information in a small notebook.

HASKINS

Okay...That’s it then. The whole place is mapped and ranged.

He stops writing and looks at Finch.

HASKINS

Let’s get the fuck outta here amigo.

Finch lowers the rangefinder.

FINCH

Move out and draw fire my man.

INT. TYLER’S QUARTERS - ESTABLISHING - NIGHT

We see Tyler as he enters the room. He places his suitcase on the bed and walks into the rest room. After staring at his face in the mirror for a moment, he walks back into the room, sits on the edge of the bed and picks up the telephone. He punches some numbers and waits. His son BILLY answers the phone.

BILLY

Hello?

Tyler sits on the side of the bed motionless. After several seconds he finally speaks.

TYLER

Hi ya Bill.

The child’s voice becomes instantly excited.

INT. JENNIFER'S APARTMENT – ESTABLISHING – NIGHT

Billy talks on the phone to Tyler.

BILLY

Daddy! Mommy it’s Daddy. Hi Daddy. When are you coming to see us?

BEGIN SERIES OF INTERCUTS

CUT TO:

Tyler is pained by the pleading tone in his son’s voice.

TYLER

I’ll see you soon shorty. How’s school?

BILLY

It’s okay I guess. I got an A in math.

TYLER

Hey! That's great champ. I'm proud of you.

CUT TO:

Billy continues his conversation with Tyler on the phone. Tyler’s ex-wife JENNIFER Walks into the scene from another room.

BILLY

Did you get in any wars Daddy?

JENNIFER

Billy, Honey, let me talk to your father. Why don’t you go see if the brownies are cool yet. Okay?

BILLY

Okay mom. I love you Daddy.

Billy reluctantly hands the phone to his mother and walks into the kitchen leaving Jennifer alone to speak to Tyler.

JENNIFER

What is it Tyler?

CUT TO:

TYLER

Jen, I just called to say hi to Billy. That’s all. No big deal.

CUT TO:

JENNIFER

It is a big deal. We agreed that you would go through me before you talk to Billy. You know how he wants to hear all about your war stories. Then I have to deal with the crying when you're gone.

CUT TO:

TYLER

You mean our lawyers agreed. Billy’s my son too and I have every right to...

Tyler stops in mid-sentence. He takes a deep breath and calms himself down.

TYLER

(continuing)

Look, I didn’t call to upset you or the boy. I just wanted to hear my son’s voice that’s all.

CUT TO:

Jennifer also softens a little.

JENNIFER

Tyler, the court said that you have to contact me in writing to set up visitation and that goes for phone calls too, you know that. I’m just trying to go by the rules which is something you may want to try yourself for a change.

END INTERCUTS

INT. TYLER’S QUARTERS – NIGHT

Tyler sits on the edge of the bed with the phone to his ear as he rubs his eyes with his head hung low. He tries to speak but can only mutter a few words under his breath.

TYLER

I’m sorry.

(pause)

I'll call some other time.

JENNIFER

You going out again?

TYLER

Yeah.

JENNIFER

Is it bad?

TYLER

Bad enough.

They both pause.

JENNIFER

You know how it was before. What a wreck I was when you left on your... missions.

TYLER

I remember.

JENNIFER

That's something I had to be done with. The fear.

TYLER

I just wanted to hear my son's voice.

JENNIFER

Come visit when you can. We...Billy would like to see you.

TYLER

I will.

Tyler hangs up the phone and sits on the bed looking very depressed. He glances over at the nightstand by the bed where he has placed a FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH of Jennifer, Billy and himself, taken during happier times. After a few seconds he shakes it off and reaches for his gear bag. Removing a SCRAMBLER ,he attaches it to the phone and punches a few numbers. The party at the other end answers.

V.O.

Operations. SERGEANT DAWSON.

TYLER

This is Major McGee, D817313.

INT. SOCOM OPERATIONS OFFICE - ESTABLISHING - NIGHT

We see the modern looking computerized room. There are three uniformed operators seated at three different consoles. Sergeant Dawson stands near a console speaking on a telephone.

INT. CU - SERGEANT DAWSON

DAWSON

Just a moment sir.

Dawson punches several keys on a nearby console. Tyler’s face and a corresponding data sheet appear on the monitor.

DAWSON

Security in 3...2...1.

Dawson throws a switch on the phone that reads “SECURITY”.

INSERT

Tyler activates the SCRAMBLER on his phone.

INT. SOCOM OPERATIONS ROOM - NIGHT

A green light activates on Dawson’s phone indicating the line is now secure.

DAWSON

Clear. What can I do for you Major.

INT. TYLER’S QUARTERS - NIGHT

Tyler leafs through a small notebook as he speaks into the phone.

TYLER

I need a search and locate on the following enlisted man...and I need it in Colonel Cross' office by 2100 tonight.

EXT. OUTSIDE CROSS’ OFFICE - NIGHT

We see Cross walking into his office. He enters and closes the door.

INT. CROSS’ OFFICE - NIGHT

Cross walks through the darkened office to a wall switch but before he can turn on the light he hears a voice.

TYLER

We agreed on 2100 hours...You’re four minutes late sir.

Cross turns on the light and is visibly startled.

INSERT

Tyler seated on the sofa in Cross' office.

CROSS

Remind me to replace my internal security officer.

Tyler stands up and walks to the desk.

TYLER

Let me have the dossiers and I'll be on my way.

Cross hands the files to Tyler.

CROSS

Here, but you're gonna need more than old DOC REEM.

TYLER

If you wanted a full frontal assault you wouldn't have called me. Doc is hooked up and knows who's who. I'll trust his choices.

Cross hands the file to Tyler. Tyler tucks it into his shirt and begins to leave.

CROSS

Don’t you even want to take a quick look at Gault’s dossier?

TYLER

(turning back)

I’ll look at it later. Right now I wanna get moving. I’ll see ya...Sir.

Tyler turns away from Cross and walks out of the office. Cross re-seats himself at his desk and opens a file folder. He ruminates aloud.

CROSS

Oh yeah. This is gonna get real interesting.

EXT. GAULT’S HEADQUARTERS - NIGHT

The headquarters is nothing more than a dilapidated older store front in a seamier section of downtown. The windows in front have been painted over to ward off prying eyes.

We see Finch and Haskins pulling their car to a stop if front of the building. They exit the car and looking around furtively the two men walk up to the front door.

INSERT - CU

We see Finch’s finger pushing the button mounted on the wall. Above the button is mounted a small intercom speaker.

V.O.

Yeah?

ANOTHER ANGLE

Finch and Haskins are facing the building while standing in the shadows.

FINCH

It’s me Finch.

V.O.

Is Haskins with you?

FINCH

Yeah he’s right here.

A brief moment passes before a buzz is heard and the two men push the door open and go inside.

INT. GAULT’S HEADQUARTERS - ESTABLISHING - NIGHT

We see a scaled down version of Cross' headquarters we saw earlier. Smaller and with fewer people. Gault and several other men are bent over a lighted chart table examining photographs. Gault is briefing them.

Finch and Haskins walk over to Gault as he's finishing up his briefing.

GAULT

...and once we secure the bugs, we simply drive to the air base, hop on a plane and we're outta here.

One of the mercs doesn't seem that confident on Gault's escape plan.

MERC #6

Sir, what's to stop them from just opening fire?

Gault's expression shows that he doesn't like being questioned.

GAULT

Once we have the cannisters, they won't dare fire.

Looking to Laura.

GAULT

Tell 'em why.

LAURA

Because the microbes inside each cannister are so virulent that if released into the atmosphere by say... a stray bullet shattering one of their containers, the prevailing winds will distribute them far enough to kill thousands of American citizens within 4 hours of exposure.

She glances back to Gault.

GAULT

The military will be operating on direct Presidential orders and he won't let anything ruin his chances of re-election.

Merc #6 nods his head in agreement but he still looks worried.

GAULT

Now what's wrong?

MERC #6

Sir, it just seems you're putting a lot of faith in our being able to override the security system and secure the biologicals.

Gault starts to lose it but calms himself.

GAULT

You know what?

Gault looks to Laura. She produces a SUPPRESSED SMALL CALIBER PISTOL and fires two rounds into Merc #6. He drops to the floor. Laura has an almost orgasmic expression on her face as she exhales.

GAULT

I will not have nay-sayers in my strike force. I know how special operations work. They will not interefere with us once we secure the cargo.

Finch holds out the notebook we saw him writing in on the hillside, waiting for Gault to accept it. Gault turns to face Finch.

FINCH

Here it is major. The entire workup on facility five.

Gault takes the notebook.

FINCH

Everything you ordered sir. Schedules, ranges, maps and defenses.

GAULT

Thank you lieutenant.

(pause, reading)

Why don’t you and sergeant Haskins relax for awhile and I’ll go over your report as soon as I have a moment.

Finch and Haskins start to salute but catch themselves early, realizing they are in civilian clothes and no longer in the military.

FINCH

Thank you sir.

The two men walk out of frame as Gault clutches the notebook. LAURA WINSLOW saunters up to Gault’s side and wrapping one arm around his shoulder she playfully rubs his inner thigh with her hand as she gazes down at the book.

LAURA

Is that it?

GAULT

Yes ma’am. This is it. The last piece. I told you I'd put your money to good use babe. Five hundred million dollars from our clients when the target goes down.

Laura looks up at Gault and then whispers playfully into his ear.

LAURA

Speaking of going down...

She licks her lips seductively as her eyes dart toward his crotch.

GAULT

(pause)

Works for me.

Gault turns toward his men.

GAULT

Gentlemen, let's make it happen.

There's a collective "yes sir" as Gault and Laura walk away. The others begin hustling quickly back and forth.

HASKINS

(o.s.)

Alright. You heard the man. Let's move out.

Everyone present starts rolling up maps, picking up gear, etc.

FADE OUT:

EXT. FOREST AREA - DAY

We see a small group of drunken hunters as they move clumsily through the brush in search of game. One of them stumbles and falls.

EXT. FOREST CLEARING - DAY

The camera looks over a clearing. We see no one and no movement. Then a DEER walks into the clearing in search of food. We can hear the clumsy hunters some distance away as they curse their surroundings. One of the men trips and almost falls.

V.O. #1

Fuck man. I almost broke my damn leg.

V.O. #2

Shut up dipshit. You guys are makin’ too much noise.

We see the hunters approaching the clearing ahead. One of the men notices the deer and motions to his companions.

HUNTER #1

(whispering)

Hey...Look.

The other hunters stop their clumsy trekking and follow their companion’s finger with their eyes. Hunter #1 raises a BOW, removes an ARROW from a carrier on the bow and sights up on the deer.

ANOTHER ANGLE: of the clearing. We see the deer grazing.

Hunter #1 pulls back on his bow and holds as he sights.

The deer raises it's head as if to sniff the surrounding area.

EXT. CU HANDS UNDER BRUSH - DAY

We see two green gloved hands quickly grab at a foot from under the ground.

EXT. FOREST AREA - DAY

Hunter #1 shrieks and falls to the ground. The others let out screams of surprise and rapidly cringe backward dropping their bows and arrows in their drunken surprise.

EXT. FOREST CLEARING AREA - DAY

We see a heavily camouflaged figure in a GHILLIE SUIT pop up to face the hunters with a pistol in each hand. We meet GEORGE “DOC” REEM for the first time as he confronts the hunters.

DOC

You men are trespassing on private property. Don't move.

Doc kneels down to confront Hunter #1 face to face. Doc isn’t angry but he is all business.

DOC

Now son, I understand your need to kill small defenseless animals. Hell if I looked like you I’d probably feel the need to prove my masculinity too. What with the obvious feelings of sexual inadequacy you’re feelin’ and all...

(pause)

One of the other hunters reaches into one of his coat pockets. Doc's gaze never shifts from Hunter #1. Doc cocks the hammers on both pistols.

DOC

(louder)

Now I suggest you leave be, whatever you got in that pocket or I’m just gonna have to take your friend here out of the picture. You read me son?

The other hunters look around to see what their friend is doing. The man going for the pocket freezes and looks surprised that his movements were seen.

DOC

Now real careful like...Pull out whatever you got there and set it on the ground.

The hunter removes a SMALL NICKEL PLATED .25 AUTOMATIC PISTOL and does as Doc said. Doc chuckles , stands up and steps away so he can cover the small group.

DOC

Okay then. You see how easy it is to follow instructions?

No one says a word. Doc looks down at Hunter #1 who is still lying on the ground only now the front of his pants are stained and wet.

DOC

Get on your feet boy.

Hunter #1 complies and slowly gets to his feet. He looks down at the front of his pants and then over to his companions. He looks humiliated.

DOC

This is my property. It’s well posted no trespassing and no hunting without the owner’s permission. Now being that I ain’t given boys permission, I guess that would mean that you either can’t read or you don’t believe in signs.

(pause)

Doc looks beyond the hunters and sees Tyler leaning against a tree in the b.g. Doc smiles slightly, his eyes shifting back to the group.

DOC

Either way it’s not gonna go good for you. Now I want all of you great white hunters to drop your clothes in a pile and right now.

The hunters stand stupefied looking from one to another. Doc loses patients and raises his voice.

DOC

I said strip...

Doc fires a single shot from one of his pistols into the air.

DOC

Right Now!

The hunters begin stripping right down to their underwear as fast as they can undo their buttons and zippers. The clothes lay in a pile at the feet of the freezing men.

DOC

Now just to show you I ain’t without compassion, I’m gonna let you take one piece of clothing from that pile before I send you on your way.

The hunters look from one to another again before one of the men bends over to remove his jacket from the pile and puts it on.. The other men start to retrieve their jackets as well but Doc stops them.

DOC

Uh-uh. I said one piece. Now be on your way and don’t come back here again. I'll leave your stuff at the sheriff's office. Now git!

The hunters turn and begin walking away into the forest. They argue over the single jacket as they go. Their voices fading away.

HUNTER#1

Hey man...Give up that coat. I’m freezin’.

HUNTER#2

Fuck you asshole. It’s my coat.

HUNTER#3

Good idea man. Let’s go huntin’ on the Reem place. He’s old and never home. Good one.

Doc stands there chuckling to himself as the hunters fade from view.

A short distance away, Tyler slowly claps his hands.

Doc picks up the discarded clothes and walks to the tree where Tyler is still leaning.

TYLER

How ya’ doin’ Doc?

Doc smiles and shakes his head before dropping the clothes and shaking Tyler’s outstretched hand.

DOC

Not too bad major.

TYLER

I see you're still staying sharp.

Doc scratches the back of his neck and smiles.

DOC

Well you know how it is sir...If you don’t protect what’s yours, nobody else will.

TYLER

Doc...Something’s come up. Mind if we go back to your place and talk?

Doc picks up the clothes from the ground.

DOC

Where are my manners? Of course sir, follow me.

The two old friends walk back through the woods, their voices fading.

DOC

I’ll drop this stuff off at the sheriff’s office later on.

INT. DOC’S HOUSE - ESTABLISHING - AFTERNOON

Tyler and Doc are just finishing their talk about Gault as they sit at a coffee table.

TYLER

So that’s it Doc. I need you on board for this one. I know it doesn't matter to you but there's a promotion to master sergeant that comes with the job.

DOC

Master Sergeant Reem. That sure sounds nice.

Doc shifts his gaze to a framed photograph on the wall of an older man in an Army colonel’s dress uniform. He ruminates to the photo.

DOC

That’s about as close to colonel as I’m ever gonna get Daddy.

Doc ponders for a moment before answering Tyler’s offer.

DOC

It’s a bargain sir. But...

TYLER

But what?

DOC

I have to be able to do my thing as I see fit. Agreed?

Tyler reaches his hand out across the table to DOC.

TYLER

Whatever you say Master sergeant.

Doc smiles broadly.

DOC

Alright then.

Doc pulls up his chair closer to the table.

DOC

Let’s get down to cases sir. Now I know a couple of good people...

TYLER

That's what I was counting on Doc.

Tyler leans back in his chair with a satisfied look.

CUT TO:

EXT. MILITARY BASE - NIGHT - ESTABLISHING

We see one side of a military facility surrounded by a high

Chain link fence.

A road terminates at a guard shack gate area manned by two uniformed and armed soldiers.

We see a printed sign near the guard shack that reads: "FORT WILLIAM CRAIG UNITED STATES ARMY RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT FACILITY- AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY".

CUT TO:

INT. BASE OPERATIONS OFFICE - NIGHT

Soldiers are seated at various consoles and monitoring stations. Lieutenant MULLINS walks through the facility as he supervises his men.

MULLINS

(looking at his watch)

Commo relay check in ten minutes.

Mullins continues walking and checking.

CUT TO:

EXT. GATE AREA - NIGHT

A guard stands near the front gate just outside the GUARDSHACK.

We see a small convoy of military vehicles carrying uniformed soldiers approaching the gate from the outside.

The guard leans into the shack to alert his partner.

The vehicles pull to a stop at the gate. The occupants of the vehicles are all in ARMY CAMOUFLAGE UNIFORMS. The GUARD approaches the lead vehicle’s driver’s side.

GUARD

Good Evening sir. Your ID’s please.

Gault is the passenger in the lead vehicle. Finch is driving. Gault hands Finch some credentials who in turn passes them to the Guard.

INSERT - The second guard exits the shack and takes up a position near the front of the vehicle.

INSERT - The Guard opens the credential cases for inspection.

CUT TO:

CORPORAL

Up until a couple of minutes ago...he was. That’s LIEUTENANT MULLINS. The base security and communications officer.

Gault looks down at the dead officer and then fixes the Corporal with his gaze.

GAULT

That would be the man with the commo and containment codes?

CORPORAL

That's correct sir.

Gault looks around him until he finds Corporal #2 seated at the communications console.

GAULT

Corporal, you will issue the correct radio response code for all future commo relay checks.

The corporal looks scared but determined.

CORPORAL #2

FFF-uck you.

Gault walks over to the young enlisted man and smiles an endearing smile.

GAULT

Son, if you do not follow my orders, I will shoot you in the head. Do you understand?

Corporal #2 looks around at the other mercs in the room.

CORPORAL #2

I can only give my half of the codes. The lieutenant had the other half.

The first corporal bends down over Mullin's body and searches through the pockets. The mercs raise their weapons.

GAULT

At ease gentlemen...He’s on our side. This is staff sergeant ROBERT ANDERSON formerly of third group.

The other mercs look suspicious and somewhat confused. Gault notices this.

GAULT

Forgive the subterfuge but sergeant Anderson was our inside man. We needed him to disable the base security systems or we wouldn’t have gotten a hundred feet inside the gate.

Gault re-holsters his pistol and sits in a chair at one of the larger consoles and surveys the console before issuing further orders.

GAULT

Okay sergeant Anderson...Suggestions?

ANDERSON

Sir, it appears that the late lieutenant Mullins does not have a code book on him and the next commo check is in...

Looking at his watch.

ANDERSON

Forty-five seconds.

Gault is stone faced at hearing this news.

GAULT

Corporal? Where is the lieutenant's code book?

CORPORAL #2

He kept the daily codes in his head. He was really proud of his memory.

Just then the radio console begins beeping. Gault's mind is racing. The beeping continues.

GAULT

Well now he is a memory. Anderson, give me your best suggestion.

The radio continues it's urgent beeping. Anderson shrugs and shakes his head. He's at a loss as he looks over the console.

GAULT

Alright. Corporal, answer the radio.

The corporal swallows hard and turns in his chair toward the console. He puts on his headset and pushes a button. Gault and Anderson also put on headsets.

CORPORAL #2

Com Five Control.

A voice crackles through the headsets.

RADIO VOICE

The corporal looks at Gault. Gault's mind is working.

GAULT

Let 'em wait.

Pete quickly turns around to see Doc’s smiling face. Doc puts his thumb and forefinger close together as he faces Doc.

DOC

Well, maybe just a little bit.

HAYES

Doc! How the hell are ya?

Pete drops everything he’s doing to stand up and greet Doc. The two men shake hands and then embrace as Tyler stands close by. The men are alone at their section of the range. The spectators have left.

DOC

(chuckling)

Damn Pete...When the hell are you gonna stop jerkin’ the trigger?

HAYES

Man, I thought you got wasted somewhere down in Columbia last year.

DOC

I did but I made a miraculous recovery.

(pause/turning)

Major Tyler McGee, I want you to meet staff sergeant Peter Ira Hayes. Pete and I were in the storm together. You won’t find a better long rifle this side of Gunny Hathcock.

Tyler steps forward and shakes hands with Pete.

HAYES

Pleasure major but...

(pause/turning to Doc)

Somehow I don’t think you came just to watch the match.

Doc looks down at his shoe tops before answering.

DOC

You’re right but let’s not talk here. We’re having a meeting tonight at this address.

Doc passes a note to Pete. Pete stashes it in his shirt pocket without looking at it.

HAYES

I’ll be there Doc.

DOC

Alright. We'll see you and the others tonight.

Gault looks at his wristwatch.

GAULT

(continuing)

...within the hour. We can expect serious company any time and I want those devices on line when they arrive.

BIGGS

No problem sir but I could use some help deactivating the security systems for deployment.

GAULT

I’ll have Ms Winslow report to you. Computers and weapons systems are her second favorite pastime.

Gault walks out of the room as Biggs and the others look after him. Biggs looks around the room at the others.

BIGGS

Kinda makes you wonder what her first favorite pastime might be...doesn’t it?

The other mercs chuckle as they all return to work.

COMMO

KELLER

Alright. What’s the ETA on the bird?

COMMO

Approximately 20 mikes sir.

Keller is obviously disturbed by this news and after a few seconds addresses his team once again.

KELLER

I don’t know what’s going on gentlemen but whatever happens I expect you to complete your mission as assigned. Now everybody settle in and stay alert.

Keller turns and walks a short distance away and out of frame.

The soldier kneels down next to Keller.

SOLDIER

The chopper still hovers overhead.

KELLER

I can’t just leave my team out here...I need written orders lieutenant.

WOMAK

Yes sir. Your orders are waiting for you back at base camp.

Keller looks around him before continuing with Womak.

KELLER

Who issued these orders lieutenant?

WOMAK

Colonel Cross sir.

Keller is visibly surprised.

KELLER

Cross? No shit.

(pause/thinking)

Alright lieutenant. I’m outta here.

Keller points directly at Womak’s face in the military manner before continuing.

KELLER

You complete this mission. Commo will brief you.

Womak starts to hurry away.

KELLER

...and lieutenant?

Womak stops and turns to face Keller.

WOMAK

Yes sir?

Keller looks into Womak’s eyes in deadly earnest.

KELLER

Bring all of them back in one piece or I assure you there will be hell to pay. Do you read me mister?

WOMAK

Yes sir.

Keller nods his head at Womak.

KELLER

Good luck lieutenant.

WOMAK

Thank you sir.

Keller moves out to the dangling rope, gets a foot hold and is lifted up and into the chopper.

DOC

What time is it?

TYLER

Tyler and Doc are packing their gear. They hear a knock at the door.

DOC

I got it.

Doc answers the door. As the door opens we see Pete Hayes and another man standing in the hallway. Doc looks first at Pete and then at the other man. Doc grins broadly.

DOC

Howdy Pete, Harry. Come on in.

The two men enter and Doc closes and locks the door. Doc extends his hand first to Pete and then to the other man.

DOC

I see you got my message Harry. Glad you could make it. I'd hate to be the only former swabby on this gig.

The other man smiles at Doc as he shakes his hand. The man is HARRY LANDERS, 30’s, well built, close cropped hair, ruggedly handsome.

HARRY

Good to see ya Doc. When I heard you were involved I broke speed records gettin' here.

INSERT - Tyler walks in from the bedroom.

DOC

Major Tyler McGee I want you to meet your CQB specialist. Former Petty Officer first class, now Staff Sergeant Harry Landers.

Tyler and Harry shake hands. Pete has wandered off and sits in a chair nearby.

TYLER

Come in and have a seat.

Tyler stands in front of the group and begins his briefing.

TYLER

First off, let me begin by saying that the situation has changed. We now have a time table so we have to expedite this meeting.

(pause)

Tyler passes out a few papers before continuing.

TYLER

I have been in touch with the mission commander and he will be calling in a few minutes with a current sit rep.

Tyler picks up a file folder from a nearby desk and opens it before continuing.

TYLER

Just give me a moment to review the files on you gentlemen.

Tyler flips through the folder in his hands.

TYLER

Okay...let’s see.

Tyler browses through the file moving his lips as he reads. Occasionally nodding his head in approval.

TYLER

How’d you get the silver star with a V?

Hayes lowers his head with humility and sadness.

HAYES

It was no big deal sir.

ANOTHER ANGLE

Doc speaks up.

DOC

No big deal? Shit.

(beat)

Doc looks at those around him.

DOC

All he did was crawl through indian country all night in a godawful shithole down in Colombia and after that he set up on the Cali Cartel where they were holding seventeen civilian hostages for one of their own.

Doc Pauses again and surveys his audience.

DOC

Then he proceeded to drop four of the bad guys in less than fifteen seconds and then with some help from his spotter, blew away nine more before they could get to the fleeing hostages.

TYLER

Okay Doc...Okay.

Tyler turns back to face Hayes who is hanging his head.

TYLER

What’s wrong Hayes?

Hayes continues looking downward for a few moments before raising his face. He looks upset, angry, in emotional pain.

HAYES

I lost a good friend that day. My spotter, JOHNNY ORTEGA.

Hayes stands up and strolls around the room as he speaks.

HAYES

You see sir...While it’s true we nailed a bunch of ‘em, our backup didn’t show. They left us out there with our asses hangin’ in the breeze.

FADE TO FLASHBACK

EXT. JUNGLE - NIGHT

Hayes and his partner Miller run through jungle terrain, firing at their unseen pursuers.

HAYES

Johnny and I had been shootin’ these guys up and moving for most of that day. After it got dark, we made our way to a tree line and started running like hell.

More scenes of Hayes and Ortega running from bush to bush. Firing then moving. Firing then moving again.

HAYES

We were well into the jungle when we stopped. I tried calling our support team on the radio, but no answer.

Hayes and Ortega stop running. Miller assumes a security position against their pursuers while Hayes tries to reach help on the walkie-talkie.

HAYES

Proud Mary, Proud Mary this is Bookkeeper how copy over...

Just static from Hayes’ radio. Ortega let’s go with a short burst from his M-16. Return fire.

INT. HELICOPTER - NIGHT

The occupants duck their heads as bullets strike the chopper. Doc is pissed off and yells at the DOOR GUNNER.

DOC

Can you see the bad guys?

The Door Gunner looks downward warily through his night vision goggles.

DOOR GUNNER

Yeah...I think so.

DOC

Well then light ‘em up son.

The Door Gunner opens up with fully automatic fire from his M-60 machinegun.

EXT. JUNGLE - NIGHT

Many of the Colombians begin dropping like flies as they are hit by machine-gun fire from the helicopter. Some of them continue firing.

INSERT - Hayes continues shining the invisible light skyward as he points and fires his pistol toward the oncoming Colombians.

INT. HELICOPTER - NIGHT

Doc scans the ground with night vision goggles.

INSERT

We see the infrared beacon on the ground through Doc’s night vision goggles.

DOC

There he is.

Doc points at the ground in the military manner. We see the pilot is now wearing NVG’s as well.

PILOT

I got him.

EXT. JUNGLE - NIGHT

Hayes is firing in several directions and reloading. Suddenly, we hear radio traffic. It’s Doc calling him from the chopper.

DOC

Bookkeeper...Move two hundred meters west to the LZ.

Hayes pauses, then fires a few more rounds from his pistol before moving to the LZ.

HAYES

We’re movin’.

Hayes picks up Ortega’s lifeless body and fireman carries him to the Landing Zone. Bullet hits explode all around Hayes as he runs.

INT. HELICOPTER COCKPIT - NIGHT

We look over Doc’s shoulder at the clearing below. Muzzle flashes light up the darkened jungle. We can see the overwhelming force of Colombians as they begin to move in on the fleeing Hayes. Team members are firing out of the door. Doc yells at the pilot.

DOC

He’s runnin’ outta time. Get us down there sir.

The pilot is feverishly trying to safely land the chopper as he shouts his response.

PILOT

I’m working on it.

EXT. JUNGLE LANDING ZONE - NIGHT

We see the helicopter begin to set down on the LZ. Machine-gun fire continues from the side doors.

Hayes breaks into the clearing at a full run still carrying Ortega's body over his shoulder.

The chopper lands. Team members jump out and secure the LZ by providing covering fire for Hayes. Door gunner and all arriving team members firing. M203's, M-16's, M-60.

Colombians firing while others are shot and blown up.

EXT. HELICOPTER - NIGHT

Hayes arrives at the chopper, dumps Ortega’s body inside and jumps in. Doc leans out the door. Door gunner firing. Doc screams out orders.

DOC

Extract...Extract...Let’s go.

The team members peel back one by one into the chopper door while providing cover fire for the others. Door gunner firing.

INSERT - Hayes lays breathless on the floor of the chopper next to Miller’s body as the chopper lifts off. Machine-gun fire o.s.

Doc leans down to Hayes.

DOC

Are you hit?

Another team member, the MEDIC, tends to Ortega.

HAYES

No.

Doc looks over at Ortega. The Medic looks up and shakes his head.

Doc and Hayes look at Ortega’s body in silence for a few moments.

DOC

I’m sorry Pete.

Hayes has regained his breath and is angry.

HAYES

What the fuck happened out there? Where was our support?

Doc leans in even closer to Hayes.

DOC

Your mission was compromised. You guys weren’t supposed to come back from this one.

(pause)

Hayes stares down at Miller's body.

DOC

We think Captain Gault contacted the Cartel in Bogota and told them you guys were out here.

Hayes is visibly pissed off and distraught.

HAYES

Why in the fuck would he do that? He’s the C.O.

Doc leans back in his seat.

DOC

We’re not sure why but the Colombian government had a hefty price on the heads of the guys you whacked. We're still piecing everything together but so far it looks like Gault had you guys do the killing while he collected the cash.

HAYES

So are you saying Gault sold us out for money?

DOC

I’m saying it turns out the CID has been nosing around looking for Gault since the day after you left... but so far they can’t find him. He's gone. They know he made a few calls to a known Cartel member’s home along with a call to the Mayor of Cali.

Hayes hangs his head, thinking. After a few moments he looks up at Doc again.

HAYES

If that’s true, the next time I see Gault, he’s a dead man.

EXT. HELICOPTER IN FLIGHT - NIGHT

The military chopper carrying Hayes, Doc and the team flies off into the night.

FADING OUT OF FLASHBACK

INT. HOTEL ROOM - NIGHT

We see the others as they sit quietly while Doc finishes his story. Camera pans past each face as we hear Doc’s voice o.s.

DOC

So that’s why I felt Pete here would be a motivated asset on this mission. He knows the target on sight and has a good reason not to miss.

Tyler sits and ponders the story he has just heard. He looks at the faces of Doc, Harry and finally Hayes, then stands and walks over to where Hayes is seated and stands looking down at him.

TYLER

Sergeant Hayes? This can't be a personal matter. I have to know that this will be a cold blooded mission for you. I have a history with Gault myself so I know how you feel but cold blooded is how I want it. Clear?

Hayes looks up from his reverie and immediately stands up to face Tyler.

HAYES

Yes sir. Cold blooded.

TYLER

Welcome to the team.

Tyler extends his right hand out to Hayes. The two men shake hands.

HAYES

Thank you sir.

TYLER

Petty Officer First Class Harold Landers...

Harry rivets his eyes on Tyler as he reads the file aloud.

TYLER

Enlisted USN 1990 Special Warfare Unit...

(pause)

Tyler looks up from the file at Harry.

TYLER

So you're a SEAL?

HARRY

Aye, aye sir.

Tyler looks at Harry with mock disapproval of his naval jargon before he continues reading.

TYLER

Lebanon, Panama, Kuwait...

(pause/studying)

According to this Landers, you spent eight months on Team Five, four months on Team Two...

(pause)

And five years on Team Six.

Tyler stops reading and frowns as he ponders these facts.

TYLER

You moved around quite a bit didn't you?

Tyler stops reading and looks at Harry.

TYLER

Why?

HARRY

It took me awhile to get to where the action was sir.

Tyler looks puzzled at Harry’s statement.

TYLER

Are you implying that only Team Six gets into the shit?

HARRY

No sir...Not at all. I’m saying that Team Six gets into the heavy shit. Sir.

TYLER

And you like that?

HARRY

I like the rush...the high of fast close quarters battle, yes sir. I guess I'm an adrenaline junky sir.

Tyler throws down the file folder on top of the desk, looks disapprovingly at Doc and barks at Harry.

TYLER

An adrenaline junky. Is that right?

Harry stands up. Tyler is angry but controlled. He gets right up into Harry's face.

TYLER

Maybe you’re not aware of this petty officer, so I will enlighten you. This is a team effort. You are a professional operator and there sure as shit is no room here for a cowboy. You read me mister?

HARRY

Sir yes sir. I didn't mean...

TYLER

(interrupting)

Do you understand that we are assembling a special detachment here and that we work as a team at all times?

Harry is standing at rigid attention. Eyes forward.

HARRY

Sir yes sir. I...

TYLER

Are you prepared to follow my orders to the letter and without question or hesitation?

HARRY

Sir yes sir.

TYLER

You better be mister because if you hazard my team for the sake of bullshit heroics or phony machismo...

(pause)

I’ll grease you myself and then piss in the open wound. You got that straight?

HARRY

Yes sir.

Tyler glares directly into Harry’s eyes for a moment, sizing him up then walks away.

TYLER

I need a CQB expert Landers not a fuckin' hot dog. How in the hell did you last on a SEAL team?

HARRY

By being the best at my job sir.

TYLER

Yeah? Well you better be the best.

The telephone rings. Tyler looks at his wristwatch, which reads 1930 hours. He moves to the nightstand and picks up the receiver.

TYLER

McGee.

EXT. MILITARY STAGING AREA - NIGHT

Cross walks across the staging area with an AIDE in attendance. He speaks to Tyler on a radiotelephone.

Military personnel rush around in the background carrying weapons, ammunition and equipment. Military vehicles drive through the scene as Cross talks.

CROSS

Major go to secure channel 5.

INT. HOTEL ROOM - NIGHT

Tyler pushes a button on an electronic device attached to his telephone.

TYLER

Go ahead sir.

EXT. MILITARY STAGING AREA - NIGHT

Cross continues walking as he talks.

CROSS

Major, the target is Fort Craig, Kentucky. Gault has it now and if he can access the nuclear and biological stores with the launch codes we’re gonna be in some pretty shit.

Cross pauses briefly to puff on his cigar.

CROSS

You and your team will report to L.A. Air Force Base for transport to the staging area. Your orders, equipment and further instructions will be waiting on the aircraft.

Are there any questions?

INT. HOTEL ROOM - NIGHT

CU ON TYLER

TYLER

What do we have for troops sir?

EXT. MILITARY STAGING AREA - NIGHT

Cross stops walking and softens for a moment as he talks into the telephone.

CROSS

Officially...We can't deploy armed troops on U.S. soil without congressional authorization and to get that we'd have to go public and we can't do that without causing a nationwide panic.

TYLER

So we're on our own then?

CROSS

Officially...yes.

(pause)

EXT. MILITARY STAGING AREA - NIGHT

Cross continues on the phone.

CROSS

Unofficially, we have two platoons of combat MP's from the 541ST and a platoon of Rangers. I need you here...

INT. HOTEL ROOM - NIGHT

Tyler listens to Cross on the telephone.

CROSS

(continuing)

...ASAP. Cross out.

Tyler hangs up the telephone and solemnly turns to face the others.

TYLER

We’re going to Kentucky gentlemen. Home of race horses, blue grass, southern hospitality…

(pause)

And nuclear/biological weaponry.

The camera pans over the intent faces of Doc, Harry and Hayes as we hear Tyler’s voice o.s.

TYLER

So pack your trash. We have weapons and equipment check in one hour. Let’s get going.

Tyler throws some papers into a black nylon attach case and zips it closed.

EXT. FORT CRAIG - NIGHT

Various exterior shots of the base. No movement. The base appears deserted.

Various shots of Gault’s mercenaries concealed, armed and manning their posts on the alert for government troops.

INT. BASE OPERATIONS OFFICE - NIGHT

Gault sits at a console with Laura seated nearby. We see several mercs sitting at other consoles.

Laura hungrily watches Gault. She wets her lips.

LAURA

Charlie? Is there anything you would like me to do.

Several other mercs are busy at various consoles.

Gault looks at his watch and then stands. The door bursts open and in comes Finch. Gault looks back at Laura.

GAULT

Baby I want you to go check on Biggs and see how he's doing on breaking those containment codes. get me one warhead online as fast as possible so we have a way to bargain our asses outta here.

LAURA

Your wish is my command.

Laura lights a cigarette, picks up her sub-machinegun and walks through the door that Finch just opened.

INT. BASE OPERATIONS OFFICE - NIGHT

Finch closes the door behind him. He’s nervous and anxious and it shows.

FINCH

Sir... We’re not moving forward at all. Everyone is just sitting around. We’re gonna be up to our asses in shit anytime now, sir.

GAULT

Easy son. We’re on time and on target. Biggs will figure out the codes. It'll just take a little longer. Now return to your post.

FINCH

But that’s the problem sir. We’ve been on the objective a long time. Our schedule is off now. Anytime now, we're gonna be up to our necks in troops.

Gault smiles cunningly.

GAULT

They won't dare attack us in force. The confusion would give us too much time to detonate the devices.

Just then, several shots are fired from somewhere outside in the distance.

FINCH

There it is. They’re here. Now we’re fucked.

Gault gets on the radio headset.

GAULT

Alpha Leader to all teams. Status report.

INT. MILITARY BUILDING - NIGHT - ESTABLISHING

Two mercs are concealed within a building and peering cautiously through a window. One of the men, LATHAM, speaks into his headset as he brings a set of NIGHT VISION GOGGLES up to look through.

LATHAM

Team Four Charlie...We’ve got movement. South perimeter.

About two hundred meters from the fence line. Looks like a squad of 'em sir...

INSERT

We see a squad of camouflaged Army Rangers as they low crawl through the brush, then freeze.

INT. MILITARY BUILDING - NIGHT

Latham lowers the goggles. We see several other mercs in the background as they ready their weapons.

LATHAM

Looks like the party’s starting sir. They’re probing our perimeter. Over.

Gault's voice crackles back over Latham's headset.

GAULT

(o.s)

Roger. Let 'em know we're here. Out.

Latham gives several silent hand signals.

LATHAM

Roger. Four Charlie out.

Latham readies his own weapon for combat and calls over the headset. Latham raises a pair of binoculars to his eyes as he speaks.

LATHAM

Four Charlie to Four Delta...Give me two flares and four rounds H.E. on the point of that team. Range 200 meters. Standby.

INSERT

Two mercs sit behind a mortar emplacement. One checks the weapon’s range adjustments and hangs a round preparing to fire. The other fires two slap flares in rapid succession. The first merc drops the mortar round down the tube and the weapon fires with a thump.

INSERT

Several Rangers move slowly from their points of concealment as they low crawl through the brush.

Two Rangers low crawling through the brush when one of them touches something with his hand. RANGER #1 uses silent hand signals to tell the others to stop and then slowly begins clearing leaves away from the object.

INSERT CU ON HANDS

Ranger #1's hands gently clear away leaves from around the object until we can read "FRONT TOWARD ENEMY" embossed on the front of the CLAYMORE MINE he has just uncovered.

INSERT

Ranger #1's eyes widen. We hear o.s. the hiss of flares being fired. The Ranger's eyes are fixed upon the mine in front of him.

RANGER #1

(whispering)

Oh Shit.

He gestures toward the others.

RANGER #1

Exfil. We're in a mine field. Backtrack. Move.

CUT TO:

EXT. DARK SKY - NIGHT

A flare streaks up into the sky and ignites into a brilliant ball of light.

EXT. WOODED AREA - NIGHT

The entire landscape in bathed in the eerie glow of the first flare. We hear the second flare ignite o.s.

INSERT

The Rangers are lying motionless in the eerie light of the flare. Shadows play over their still bodies as the first whistling incoming mortar round is heard o.s.

A high explosive mortar round strikes the ground. Several of the Rangers are left dead or dying by the direct hit. The Ranger PATROL LEADER gets to his feet and barks commands.

PATROL LEADER

Ambush. Ambush. Eyes up.

The Patrol Leader begins firing at the fenceline. The other Rangers join in.

EXT. MILITARY STAGING AREA - NIGHT

Cross and several other uniformed officers are watching the wooded area through binoculars at the explosions and gunfire. Cross lowers his binoculars, rips the cigar from his mouth and throws it to the ground. Turning to a CAPTAIN standing next to him he barks out an order.

CROSS

Get ‘em the hell outta there captain.

The Captain runs back to a waiting HMMV where a soldier/radio operator is sitting inside. The Captain shouts the order to him

CAPTAIN

Recall the squad! Get ‘em outta there!

The radio operator speaks into the handset.

RADIO OPERATOR

Bishop Leader this is Chicago. Exfil. I say again, exfil immediately.

How copy, over.

INSERT

The Rangers continue firing on the Base perimeter emplacements as they attempt to withdraw using a peelback maneuver.

INT. MILITARY BUILDING – NIGHT

Latham watches the carnage through his NIGHT VISION GOGGLES. Lowering the goggles, Latham looks down to the floor next to him. He reaches to pick up an object and places it on his lap. He removes the cover from the object.

INSERT

Hands removing the cover from a metallic box, which reveals an electronic FIRING BOX DETONATOR underneath with numerous wires, connected.

INT. MILITARY BUILDING – NIGHT

LATHAM

Sorry guys. It's just business.

Latham smiles and flips several of the many switches on the detonator.

EXT. WOODED AREA - NIGHT

The other rounds strike near the Rangers. We can see the Rangers firing as the mercs open up on them with their machineguns. The claymore mines begin detonating all around the fleeing Rangers.

INSERT - Various shots of the Ranger squad being dessimated by mortars, mines and machinegun rounds until all the Rangers are killed or wounded.

INT. MILITARY BUILDING - NIGHT

Latham lowers his binoculars and wears a look of smug satisfaction on his face. He turns to his fellow mercs squatting nearby.

LATHAM

That outta let 'em know they've been seen. Cease fire.

The others smile and chuckle. Latham talks into his headset.

LATHAM

Four Charlie to Alpha...

INT. BASE OPERATIONS OFFICE - NIGHT

We hear Latham’s voice over Gault’s headset.

LATHAM

Perimeter is secure sir. No further movement. The wounded are carrying away the dead. Over.

GAULT

Alpha...Roger. Good work. Out.

Gault stands and walks to the nervous Finch. Gault leans in and whispers into Finch’s ear.

GAULT

(whispering)

You can be replaced by a button that does little or nothing. Don’t let me think of you as a liability.

Gault looks at Finch hard, pressing for a response.

GAULT

You read me son?

Finch swallows hard while simultaneously rubbing his own throat.

FINCH

Yes sir. Permission to return to my unit sir?

Gault nods his approval and Finch quickly leaves the office.

INT. MILITARY JET IN FLIGHT - NIGHT

Doc comes out of the rest room looking ill.

DOC

I really hate flying.

Tyler sits in his seat in the b.g. away from the others, working on a laptop computer. Hayes sits cleaning and preparing his weapon and equipment. Doc shakily makes his way back to his seat as Harry watches and grins.

HARRY

Hey Doc?

DOC

Yeah.

HARRY

How many jumps did you make as a corpsman in Nam?

Doc rolls his eyes. He’s really woozy.

DOC

Fifty-five. Why?

HARRY

Oh...No reason. Just wondering. You’d think you would be used to planes by now.

Doc tries to sleep in his seat. Harry looks over at Tyler. After watching him for a minute, Harry walks over and sits across from Tyler.

HARRY

Major McGee?

TYLER

Yes sergeant.

HARRY

I think you misunderstood me back at the hotel.

TYLER

How so?

HARRY

Well sir, while it’s true I enjoy the rush...the adrenaline high, I would never endanger a mission or team member.

Tyler sits back in his seat, so far unimpressed.

HARRY

I have trained my whole life with handguns. I can safely say without fear of contradiction that my accuracy and focus during combat is only surpassed by my speed.

Harry stands up and begins pacing in front of Tyler.

HARRY

In other words sir, I know you haven’t seen me work but I couldn’t be as good as I am if I were reckless or just out looking for a thrill.

(pause)

Harry sits down across from Tyler and looks him straight in the eyes.

HARRY

The bottom line major is I won’t let the team down. I am a professional and you can count on that sir.

Tyler sits silently for a moment as he studies Harry.

TYLER

Professional is a word usually bantered about by those seeking that status. Leave it at this. We both know what's at stake here.

Harry stands up immediately.

HARRY

Yes sir. Thanks for your time.

Harry returns to his seat and his handguns. He begins cleaning them for the tenth time.

An Air Force LIEUTENANT interrupts Tyler.

LIEUTENANT

Excuse me major but you have a call on COM LINK 2.

TYLER

Thank you Lieutenant.

Tyler picks up a telephone handset from a communications array next to his seat.

TYLER

McGee.

INT. MILITARY JET - NIGHT

Harry works over his equipment. Hayes leans over to Doc who is sleeping in his seat. Hayes gently jostles Doc awake. We see Tyler in B.G..

HAYES

Doc...Doc.

DOC

Yeah...What’s up. Are we there yet?

HAYES

No. Not yet. About another hour.

Doc tries to go back to sleep but Hayes again jostles him.

HAYES

Come on Doc. I wanna ask you something.

Doc grudgingly wakes up, rubs his eyes and looks at Hayes.

DOC

What do you want to know?

HAYES

What’s the story on the Major anyway?

Doc smiles slightly.

DOC

Not to worry. He’s high speed and low drag. He's a good guy. Helluva soldier.

Hayes looks over at Tyler who is still talking on the COM link.

HAYES

Yeah I know he’s your friend and all that, but...well...

Doc sits up and sees for the first time that Hayes is worried.

DOC

Are you thinking that maybe you’re gonna get hung out to dry again like in Colombia?

Hayes looks almost ashamed.

HAYES

The thought had crossed my mind.

Doc turns toward Hayes and becomes very intent.

DOC

Let me tell you something Pete. I’ve worked with the major several times. If we get screwed up on this mission, it won’t be because of Tyler McGee.

We hear Tyler’s voice O.S.

TYLER

Alright. Listen up.

Tyler walks into the team area where the others are seated.

TYLER

(continuing)

Our ETA is approximately 45 mikes. When we arrive, nobody talks to anyone. Not officers, enlisted, no one. Get off the aircraft and follow me.

(beat)

Any questions? Now's the time.

We see the team members readying their weapons and ammunition in silence.

EXT. ARMY AIRFIELD - NIGHT - ESTABLISHING

Cross and several others stand near a HMMV. Hustle and Bustle in the background as soldiers and vehicles are readied for action. Cross is giving a briefing.

CROSS

We’ve identified their main defense points…

INSERT - TOPOGRAPHICAL MAP

Cross' finger pointing to areas on the map.

CROSS

...here and here on the north perimeter. Two M-60’s and approximately 20 troops with automatic rifles. Here and here on the west and east, same deal, but on the south... here, here and here...

INSERT CU ON CROSS

CROSS

(continuing)

...something a little different. That’s the easiest and most direct way onto the base and they know it. It has been heavily fortified with sandbags, explosives and heavy machine-guns.

(pause)

Cross removes the cigar from his mouth.

CROSS

I want you team leaders to study this map. The insertion team is inbound as we speak. When they arrive, it's their show. We're in a holding pattern right now so nobody does anything unless I clear it first.

EXT. BASE AIRFIELD - NIGHT

A military jet transport lands and rolls to a stop as the flight crew opens the rear ramp of the plane.

INSERT CU ON REAR RAMP

Dressed in full combat gear, Tyler and his team de-plane.

EXT. BASE AIRFIELD - NIGHT

Cross meets Tyler as they walk across the tarmac. Tyler salutes for himself and the team. Cross returns the salute.

CROSS

Well you took long enough getting here major. I was about ready to start searching the local brothels.

Cross and Tyler shake hands as they reach each other. Tyler looks down at his wristwatch.

TYLER

Five hours and thirty-three minutes from call up and coming from California? I think we're on time sir.

CROSS

Yeah...well I guess I’m just amped up from the situation.

You’ve been getting the in-flight updates right?

TYLER

Yes sir.

CROSS

The Rangers lost most of their men out there and they never even got close to the fence line.

TYLER

We need to re-evaluate our strike plan sir.

Cross looks intently at Tyler.

CROSS

I agree. Let me get you current on the tactical situation before you take the ball. Your Captain Keller is already out conducting his own leader's Recon.

Tyler turns back to the other team members following.

TYLER

Hayes.

EXT. CU ON HAYES - NIGHT

Hayes is looking around with the keen eyes of a sniper. He has a rifle DRAG BAG strapped to his back. He looks to Tyler.

HAYES

Yes sir.

CU ON TYLER

TYLER

Suit up and find Captain Keller. You will be Recon-1.

HAYES

Yes sir.

Hayes flips up his GHILLIE SUIT hood and hurries out of frame. The rest of the group continues walking.

EXT. WOODED AREA - NIGHT

We see Captain Keller as he scans the compound with binoculars. He is face painted and well camouflaged.

INSERT

From Keller’s POV through the binoculars we see a small portion of the compound under Gault’s control. No movement.

EXT. WOODED AREA - NIGHT

Keller lowers his binoculars, pauses briefly as he surveys the terrain, then slowly begins moving out.

INT. TACTICAL HUT - NIGHT - ESTABLISHING

The door opens. Cross, Tyler and the team enter a small dimly lighted Quonset type hut. Electronic consoles, video screens glowing and radio traffic fill the background. The men walk over to a chart table in the center of the room. Cross looks at and gestures to the map on the table.

CROSS

Gentlemen...I don’t have time to give you an in depth briefing. As you can see here...

ANGLE ON

A finger points to various locations on the map as we here Cross’ voice.

CROSS

We believe this building, the base Ops office to be Gault’s headquarters.

CU ON TYLER

Tyler is looking down studying the map. Cross continues.

CROSS

He has two and four man teams spread out everywhere.

CU ON LANDERS

LANDERS

Sir? What does the latest SALUTE report say about weapons?

The men stand around the map table.

CU ON CROSS

He leafs through several papers before finding the one he wants and reads it aloud.

CROSS

Size...Approximately 75 troops. Armed with varying weapons from M-16 rifles to MP-5’s and we saw at least ten AT-4 launchers and varying types of explosives, light and heavy machineguns. The Bio/Nukes are contained in this facility...

Cross points to the map.

CROSS

One way in, one way out. You've got to take and secure that building until we can get EOD and the computer geeks in there.

Tyler takes one final look at the map before issuing orders to his men.

TYLER

Landers...Get your gear together. I need to talk to DOC for a minute. We’ll meet you here...

Tyler points down at the map.

TYLER

...at the jump off point in five mikes.

CU ON LANDERS

LANDERS

Aye-aye...

Landers catches his mistake in mid-sentence.

LANDERS

Yes sir. Five mikes.

Landers picks up his gear and leaves the hut. Tyler turns to Cross.

TYLER

If there’s nothing else sir...

INSERT CU ON CROSS

CROSS

That’s it Major. You have the ball. Good hunting.

Tyler salutes Cross. The two men shake hands. Tyler and Doc leave the hut as Cross leans on the table studying the map.

CROSS

(whispering)

Good hunting…and God’s speed my friend.

EXT. TACTICAL HUT - NIGHT

Tyler and Doc descend the few steps and walk and talk.

TYLER

Well Doc...I believe this is the first time since I’ve known you that you’ve been this quiet for this long.

(Beat)

Sound off. What’s on your mind?

DOC

I gotta bad feelin’ sir. I’m not so sure about this one.

TYLER

Not sure about what Doc?

Doc stops walking. Tyler goes another step before stopping and turning back to face Doc.

DOC

(concerned)

What if Gault arms and launches those warheads before we can get to him?

Now Tyler looks concerned. He looks at Doc. Tyler’s face softens.

TYLER

What! Do you wanna live forever Doc?

DOC

(slightly smiling)

No sir, not forever. Just long enough to become a burden to my friends and family.

Tyler claps Doc on the shoulder. The two men smile, albeit uneasily.

TYLER

We'll just have to make sure we get to 'em before they can react.

The two men walk off to ready themselves, their gear and their teammates.

EXT. WOODED AREA - NIGHT

Keller lays on his belly partially concealed by shrubs as he watches the compound. He looks intent on finding the best way inside. Suddenly, a voice from close by.

HAYES

So Whaddya think sir?

Keller jerks to his right and toward the voice. He quickly brings his carbine up to bare.

CU ON PILE OF LEAVES

Hayes dressed in full ghillie suit four or five feet away and laying prone slowly raises his head. Keller, recognizing Hayes, relaxes a bit.

KELLER

Staff sergeant Hayes I believe I have instructed you on several occasions concerning proper field contact.

CU ON HAYES

HAYES

Yes sir. You certainly have. My apologies if I frightened you Captain. By the way, it's good to see you again sir.

CU ON KELLER

He looks pissed off. His jaw tightens. Keller looks back toward the compound through his binoculars.

KELLER

Where is the major and the rest of the team?

Hayes digs into his shirt pocket as he responds.

HAYES

Sir...The major sends his compliments and asked me to give you this radio. Your call sign is Sandman four.

Hayes hands the radio to Keller who grudgingly accepts it.

KELLER

(mumbling)

Sandman four...right.

(pause/turning)

Keller quietly clears his throat.

KELLER

(continuing)

Alright sergeant...I’ve been watching these guys for about two hours now and I’ve spotted three of their barricaded positions just to the left of that building…

Keller points o.s. and Hayes follows with his eyes.

KELLER

...and over there in the shadows...

Keller points o.s. to a different location.

KELLER

...and there by that out building.

HAYES

Yes sir. I spotted them about thirty minutes ago...

CU ON HAYES

Hayes begins pointing o.s. at various locations of the compound.

HAYES

(continuing)

Just to the right of that truck there’s a mortar team with an 81mm tube.

Hayes changes position. Keller follows his every hand gesture with his eyes.

HAYES

Over there behind that building is a five man fire team with three M-16’s, a SAW and a MAG-58.

(pause/shifting)

Now over there sir...There’s a rifle squad quartered inside that building. More M-16’s, MP-5’s, grenades and so forth. All in all I'd say there's a little more than two platoons inside sir.

CU ON KELLER

KELLER

Two platoons?

HAYES

Yes sir. That's as close as I can make it right now.

KELLER

Alright sergeant. Have you picked your spot yet?

HAYES

Yes sir. I’ve been around the entire facility and I believe that right over there...

Hayes gestures o.s. with his right hand into the darkness.

INSERT - VIEW OF LOW HILLTOP

HAYES

...on that low hilltop is the best place for me to set up. From there I can command this entire portion of the base perimeter and look right down Broadway.

KELLER

Very well sergeant. Move out. Let me know when you’re in position.

HAYES

Roger that sir.

Hayes covers up and moves out. Keller resumes viewing through his binoculars.

EXT. BASE AIRFIELD - NIGHT

Tyler, Doc and Landers are now fully dressed in their individual combat gear and face paint.

DOC

Well, if you ask me, we should back off and call for an air strike. Fry the bastards and the germs. Not that there's much difference between the two.

LANDERS

Come on Doc. If we do that we’ll never be able to see their faces when we waste 'em. Besides, we have our own men in there.

DOC

Those soldiers are either dead or dying and we can't...

TYLER

Alright...Knock it off both of you. We take ‘em down. Fast and all the way. Do you two read me?

Doc and Landers answer loudly in unison.

DOC

Yes sir.

LANDERS

Yes sir.

TYLER

Okay Doc. You and Landers move out and make your entry. NOD’s on now. Check your Suppressors... and Landers?

Harry looks up toward Tyler.

LANDERS

TYLER

The beer’s are on you when we’re done here.

Landers smiles eagerly.

LANDERS

Aye-A…

Landers catches his error in mid-response and smiles.

LANDERS

Roger that Major.

TYLER

Alright gentlemen. I’ll see you on the other side. Move out.

Landers takes off first in one direction. Doc in another. Tyler lingers a moment and follows the others with his eyes before taking off in yet a third direction.

CU ON CAPTAIN

CAPTAIN

Sir, if the contents of one of the bio canisters is exposed to the air it could conceivably mutate into a level five virus in less than twenty-four hours. INT. WEAPONS DEPOT - NIGHT

Tyler dives inside. The office is a smoky flaming mess. Laura recovers from the blast and brings her rifle up at Tyler.

EXT. WEAPONS DEPOT - NIGHT

We see Laura's firelight silhouette through the window on the front of the building through Hayes' riflescope. Hayes fires.

INT. WEAPONS DEPOT - NIGHT

Laura's chest explodes as Hayes' bullet passes through the window and then her. Tyler spins around in time to see Laura fall and looks back to Gault.

Tyler scrambles to his feet, pistol in hand.

We see Laura drop to the floor in the b.g.

Gault is sitting on the floor with his back up against a wall. He has been partially impaled by flying metal from the door and office machines exploded by Doc's grenade. He stares at Tyler, panting with exhaustion. He clutches a pistol in his hand on the floor beside him. Tyler takes aim at Gault.

GAULT

Well major. Go ahead...

(pause/choking)

I said go ahead. Fire.

Tyler slightly lowers his pistol realizing Gault is dying.

TYLER

Nope. I want you to suffer as long as possible you prick.

Gault tries to laugh but only succeeds in coughing up blood.

GAULT

I guess this just isn't your day.

Gault raises the pistol to his head and fires. Tyler watches, emotionless. He walks over to where Gault lies.

TYLER

Oh I don't know...

(pause)

It's shaping up to be a helluva lot better than yours.

Tyler stands over Gault's lifeless body and ponders for a moment before spitting on the corpse and walking away. On the way out of the office Tyler looks over at Laura's body.

INSERT CU ON LAURA'S BODY LYING SPREAD EAGLE FACE UP

TYLER

Bitch.

Tyler walks out the door and steps out into the first early rays of morning sunlight. He sees a group of soldiers clustered around Doc's body. Hayes steps in next to Tyler.

HAYES

You alright Major?

TYLER

Yeah. I'm okay sergeant.

Both men look at the group surrounding Doc's body.

HAYES

Doc was a good man. Good soldier.

TYLER

Doc was a good friend.

INSERT ON CROWD OF SOLDIERS

Doc stands up and yells at the crowd.

DOC

Get offa me man. I'm a medic I outta know when I'm alright.

EXT. WEAPONS DEPOT - DAWN

Tyler and Hayes are stupefied. They rush over to Doc and take him off to the side behind a building away from prying eyes. Tyler removes his balaclava as does Hayes.

TYLER

Doc you're...

DOC

Alive. I realize that Major.

HAYES

But I saw you get sprayed. How...?

Doc pounds on his chest.

DOC

Kevlar. Level five. I never leave home without it.

Just then Cross joins the three men.

CROSS

Major McGee. Well done. EOD is going over the mess Gault made and they should have things stabilized soon.

TYLER

Then, with your permission sir, we'll be leaving.

Cross pulls out a cellular phone, pushes a button and hands it to Tyler.

CROSS

Take off gentlemen.

Cross gives Doc a wink and strolls off barking orders.

CROSS

Alright you guys. Did somebody say take five? Let's get up and get gone...

EXT. WEAPONS DEPOT - DAWN

Tyler, Doc and Hayes begin walking away.

KELLER

Hey...Wait up.

The three men stop and turn as Keller quick limps to them.

TYLER

How ya' feeling captain?

KELLER

Okay. I've had worse.

The four men begin walking slowly away from camera. Tyler notices Keller's bleeding.

TYLER

Take a look at him will ya' Doc.

Doc visually examined Keller's leg as they walk. He makes a half hearted reach for Keller's leg.

DOC

Lemme see that. Aw that ain't nuthin. Why back in Nam I got hit right in the...

HAYES

Yeah Doc we know. You and Audie Murphy.

Doc feigns anger.

TYLER

Let's go pick up Harry and get the hell outta here.

The others agree.
