Even though Brasilia is the capital city it is the fourth biggest city. In Rio de Janiero there is a very famous statue called Christ the Redeemer. The biggest city in Brazil is Sao Paulo. It has around 12 million people in it. The most spoken language in Brazil is Portuguese. The Amazon is one of the widest rivers in the world and it stretches for 6,840km. The country is totally energy independent since 2006. It was importing 75% of its energy needs in the form of oil. Brazil has 60% of the rainforests that make up the Amazon rainforests. A quarter of the rain forests are in Brazil. Brazil has the most species of mammals, plants and fresh-water fish of any country in the world. Pele comes from Brazil he is said to be the best soccer player in the world. He first played for his country when he was 16. He played in 4 different World Cups and he scored a lot of good goals. The money in Brazil is called real just like in Ireland it is called a euro. Brazil’s national flag is iconic in its blue, green and yellow colours, and it is often waved at sporting events or depicted on fashionable clothing items. There are 27 stars on the flag. The flag represents Brazil today, but it used to be different during the Brazilian Empire. The colours of the flag have meanings. Yellow represents the wealth of the of the country, in particular the Brazilian soil and the country’s gold reserves. The green stands for the extensive nature, fauna, and flora that Brazil is home to, especially the Amazon Rainforest and the Pantanal. The flag we know today was made on November 19, 1889. This was 4 days after Brazil became a republic. Sometimes people call the flag Auriverde. In terms of Christian religions, the main churches are Catholic, Protestant, Methodist, Episcopal, Pentecostal, Lutheran and Baptist. Catholicism was introduced to Brazil when Europeans settlers arrived with the aim of civilising the local native people. They built churches and brought religious leaders into the country to teach young and old alike the doctrines of Catholicism. During the 19th century, Catholicism was made the official religion of Brazil. This meant that Catholic priests were made a salary by the government, including them in the political affairs of the country. As such, Catholicism became an integral part of the management and administration of Brazil and its people. Many of the Brazilian festivals are based on the Catholic religion. Other religions (that is, of non-Christian origins) include: Jewish, Muslim (or Islam), Buddhist Jehovah’s Witness, Shinto, Rastafarian, Candomblé, Umbanda and Spiritism is also one of the significant, although minor, religions in Brazil.
