FOREWORD

The Brazilian Embassy and the Brazilian American Cultural Institute (BACI), in Washington, D.C., take pleasure in presenting this Survey of Luso-Brazilian and Latin American Studies which include Brazil and which are currently available in Institutions of Higher Learning in the United States. This is the fourth such survey undertaken by the Embassy and BACI and each succeeding one has borne evidence of an increased interest in this specific area.

The data was furnished by the institutions concerned upon our request and, in cases where no reply was received, the information was correlated from the university or college catalog.

As it is planned to revise and distribute this publication every two years, it would be appreciated if we could be informed whenever changes occur in the curriculum or teaching staff of Luso-Brazilian or Brazilian disci.plines so that we can maintain a current record for a future edition. We would further appreciate any suggestion which would improve this ?ublication or assist scholars of Luso-Brazilian studies to continue their valuable contributions in this field.

It is the desire of the Brazilian Embassy and BACI to lend support to everyone engaged in Brazilian studies. To this end BACI has available, on a free loan basis, slides, tapes and films as well as publications sold for a very nominal fee. The Embassy distributes the daily "Boletim Es pecial" and free informative material upon request.

We take this opportunity to thank the many dedicated scholars who have cooperated with us in preparing this survey. We invite them and their colleagues to call upon us whenever they feel we can be of assistance in matters related to Brazilian studies.
