According to the National Cancer Institute, women at the age of 40 and older should have a mammogram annually. Self-breast exams must be a routine. Breast cancer claimed Hattie McDaniel’s life in 1952 at the age of 57. Sigma Gamma Rho created the Hattie McDaniel Cancer Awareness and Health Program in her honor and memory. The mission of the program is to provide education and support of early detection of breast, prostate, ovarian, colon and other cancers as well as research for prevention of the cancers.Suggestions for Community Service ProgramsPartner with local hospitals and churches hosting a breast cancer awareness eventRequest brochures from the American Cancer Society to distribute at your program eventsCreate a mobile appPink Ribbon Day - Sorors, Philos, and Rhoers can wear pink ribbons under a Sigma/Affiliate pin Invite a speaker to the eventHost a “Breast Cancer Awareness”workshop where you would invite a nurse or doctor to discuss the following: Facts and Myths of Breast Cancer, Importance of self-breast exams, Demonstration of self- breast exams, and the importance of mammograms.
