About Breast Cancer Care

Breast Cancer Care is here for anyone affected by breast cancer. We bring people together, provide information and support, and campaign for improved standards of care. We use our understanding of people's experience of breast cancer and our clinical expertise in everything we do.

We want every person affected by breast cancer to get the best treatment, information and support.

Demands of the role

As a trustee, the treasurer is expected to attend Board meetings held five times a year. The treasurer currently chairs the Finance & General Purposes Committee, which also meets five times a year. S/he is an ex officio member of the Investment Committee, and usually attends meetings of the Audit and Assurance Committee. Meeting details are in the enclosed timetable. Additional time spent on the role depends on the availability of the post-holder, the needs of the chair and other responsibilities. Such requirements are flexible and tend to vary from month to month.

The role is unpaid although expenses will be reimbursed. The treasurer is appointed by the Board for a three-year term and can serve a maximum of two terms. Trustees can serve for a maximum of three terms of three years.

Summary of the role’s responsibilities:

• To take a lead in assisting the Board to monitor the organisation’s financial health, strategy and processes and report to the Board of Trustees at regular intervals in line with best practice and in compliance with the governing document and legal requirements;

• To take a lead in assisting the Board to fulfil its duty to ensure that proper accounting records are kept and financial resources are properly controlled and responsibly spent, in line with good governance, legal and regulatory requirements;

• To work closely with and provide a sounding board to the Director of Finance and Resources and his team in the development and implementation of reserves, cost-management and investment policies;

• To attend, as an ex officio member, meetings of the Finance and General Purposes Committee and the Investment Committee, and meetings of other Sub-committees of the Board of Trustees as may be required;

• To take responsibility, as a member of the Board, for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity;

• To support the chair in representing, promoting and publicising the work of Breast Cancer Care to a wide variety of audiences; and

• To fulfil all other responsibilities of a Breast Cancer Care trustee as set out in the role description for trustees.

PERSON SPECIFICATION: SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

• A commitment to the values of Breast Cancer Care.

• An understanding of strategic and financial leadership:-

o financial processes, structures & administration;

o the principles of effective organisational planning;

o how to manage change.

• An understanding of good governance:-

o the basics of charity and company law;

o recognising and maintaining the distinction between governance and management.

• Leadership qualities:-

o the ability to chair meetings effectively;

o supporting the Chair in achieving her goals.

• Strong interpersonal and communications skills:-

o the ability to communicate all financial issues in clear English and with minimal use of jargon, to facilitate clear understanding by all trustees of their responsibilities in this area;

o the ability to represent Breast Cancer Care externally, through networking, public speaking, etc;

o the ability to communicate with VIPs, major donors, celebrities and others in the course of such representational work.

Person specification

You must demonstrate how you will contribute to the work of the board and mission of Breast Cancer Care either through your personal experiences, or professional work and knowledge. ESSENTIAL

• Demonstrable financial experience at a high level of several years’ duration.

• Commitment to the vision, goals, values and strategic aims of Breast Cancer Care.

• Demonstrable experience and/or ability of working in a team of motivated and committed individuals.

• A clear communicator and an attentive listener who is willing both to lead or engage in a debate, acknowledge differing viewpoints, synthesise various arguments and facilitate orderly collective decision-making with a diverse team of trustees and staff.

• Ability to promote full understanding and acceptance of the governance role and to take a lead in assisting the trustees of Breast Cancer Care to fulfil their financial and legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities.

• Ability to understand and evaluate key financial and management information and to make sound judgements based on it.

• Commitment to fulfilling the administrative requirements of the role.

• Ability to develop strong working relationships across the organisation and with its many internal and external stakeholders.

• Ability to contribute to a harmonious and co-operative working atmosphere.

DESIRABLE

• Recognised financial qualifications (eg, a CCAB qualification).

• A person who has been personally affected by breast cancer.

• Previous or current employment by, or service as a trustee for, a charity in the UK.
