The SASS Foundation for Medical Research promotes a better understanding of cancer and related diseases, educates physicians, nurses, patients, and the public on the most advanced detention procedures and treatments available and aggressively funds state of the art research to bring us closer to finding a cure.

Dear Friends:

It is gratifying to prepare the annual report as it gives us the opportunity to look back and see all that we have accomplished. The SASS Foundation, on its 20th anniversary, remains focused in its fight against cancer. This past fiscal year was filled with new and exciting programs, expansion, and a renewed commitment and purpose in the fight against cancer and related diseases.

Some of our many highlights were:

❖ The formation of the Young Leadership Committee (YLC) comprised of a select group of men and women under the age of 45 who will help the foundation expand its mission and fundraising efforts as the “next generation.”

❖ The expansion from one Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Day to Three Education Days due in large part to the partnering with Swim Across America, as well as a grant from New York State. Three free education days (“from the tip of Montauk to the tip of Manhattan”) that deal with breast cancer prevention and treatments. A town forum event that gives each person the opportunity to meet experts in the field.

❖ Nurse Oncology Symposium – a newly accredited education seminar for RNs to acquire CEU credits.

❖ Monthly Oncology Update Series – consisting of leading physicians on a given Oncology topic addressing community doctors.

❖ 16th Annual Visiting Professorship – This year’s visiting lecturer, Dr. George Klein, a member of the faculty at Karolinska Institute, Stockholm Sweden & member of The SASS Foundation International Scientific Board, has had a long and illustrious career in cancer research. His special interests are in the fields of tumor immunology, cancer cell genetics and tumor virology. Dr. Klein conducted Grand Rounds and Morning Report at the New York Hospital on Thursday, September 7th and Grand Rounds at Memorial Sloan Kettering on Friday, September 8th.

❖ 10th Annual Gala Dinner Dance at the Waldorf Astoria on September 8th – drew a record crowd of over 400 benefactors and business leaders and over $520,000 raised.

❖ 14th Annual Golf and 1st Annual Duplicate Bridge Tournament held on May 8th at Mill River where over $100,000 in funds raised.

❖ New SASS Foundation/Insound Concert Series at the Landmark Theatre in Port Washington. Series of 5 bi-monthly concerts (beginning on Nov.3rd) geared toward young adults, with 100% of the proceeds doing to the SASS Foundation.

❖ Four Annual Research Grants awarded to bright young post-doctoral fellows to pursue innovative ideas that have the potential to develop into independent investigations with sustained NIH type funding. The amount of funding is for one year, which can be competitively renewed for a second year.

❖ Scholarships provided to high school seniors who have shown excellence in the sciences and exemplified leadership qualities that can affect positive change in the future.

❖ June Survivors Celebration – first week in June. A celebration of life hosted by the SASS Foundation to cancer survivors at Arena Oncology offices. These patients were provided with refreshments, education materials, and a renewed outlook on life.

The SASS Foundation is fortunate to have assembled a world class Medical Advisory Board, and outstanding International Scientific and Executive Advisory Boards. They include a Who’s Who of renowned physicians from around the globe, a Nobel Prize Winner, leading researchers, and business leaders.
