The single most important factor in your cosmetic outcome is the surgeon you select. Choosing an aesthetic plastic surgeon is the smart choice. Members of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery practicing within the United States are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS).*

This certification guarantees that your surgeon has completed a minimum of five years of surgical training following medical school, including an approved residency program in plastic surgery, and has passed comprehensive oral and written exams. ABPS certification qualifies your surgeon to perform reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery of the face and entire body.

Do not be confused by other official-sounding boards and certifications. The ABPS is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), which has approved medical specialty boards since 1934. There is no ABMS-recognized certifying board with "cosmetic surgery" in its name.

*If you live outside the United States, check your surgeon's affiliation with a member society of the International Confederation for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (IPRAS), or the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS). Plastic surgeons in Canada are certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

FeeS There are usually four separate fees for cosmetic surgery: the surgeon's fee, operating room

cost, anesthesia, and implant costs (if applicable). If the surgery is performed in the doctor's own facility, the operating room cost may be included. Generally, payment is made prior to surgery. Fees vary according to the complexity of the operation, the location at which the surgery is performed and the type of anesthetic administered. Choose your plastic surgeon based on qualifications, not price.

INSurANce As a rule, cosmetic plastic surgery is not covered by insurance. But when a cosmetic

procedure corrects a functional problem, there may be an exception. For example, a breast reduction can correct a chronic backache, or an upper eye lift can improve vision impaired by eyelid hooding. In such cases, contact your insurance company prior to surgery to obtain a predetermination of benefits.

SurgIcAl FAcIlITy Cosmetic surgery can be safely performed in a hospital, a

surgicenter or an accredited office-based surgical facility. If you select a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, you can be sure that surgeon is operating in an accredited, state-licensed or Medicare-certified facility. Even when you undergo a nonsurgical procedure, be sure you are in a facility equipped for emergencies.

Before granting privileges, hospital review committees evaluate training and competency for specific procedures. Even if you are having surgery in your doctor's office, hospital privileges to perform the procedure you will undergo is an assurance that you are in expert hands.

ANeSTHeSIA Some procedures can be performed with a local anesthetic to numb the treated area,

together with a sedative that induces relaxation. Occasionally a sedative may also be used to induce relaxation. Other surgical procedures may require general anesthesia, providing sleep throughout the procedure. If general anesthesia is used, it must be administered by a Board-certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist.

Surgery rISkS Cosmetic plastic surgery molds and reshapes living tissue, and the results are

not absolutely predictable. No surgeon can offer risk-free surgery or guarantee a perfect result.

Pre-AND POST-TreATMeNT INSTrucTIONS Your surgeon may request

medical clearance from your internist, heart doctor or anyone else treating you for a serious medical condition. Once you're cleared, your plastic surgeon will provide instructions that prepare you for a safe surgery and recovery. You will probably be asked to avoid smoking, aspirin and certain other medications. After the procedure, you can expect activity restrictions from several days to several weeks. Because it takes time for visible signs of healing to subside, plan significant business and social activities after you've had sufficient time to heal.

Cosmetic medical procedures are a blend of both art and science. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has a number of member surgeons who are weekend painters and sculptors, focusing on the human face and form. Plastic surgeons as a whole have a strong feeling for beauty. Their goal is to enhance the harmony of your facial features while preserving your unique facial character. Facial plastic surgery can lift your brow, open up your eyes, reshape your nose, reduce prominent ears, contour your cheeks, shape your chin and firm up your neck and jawline. Sometimes enhancing a single facial feature brings your whole face in balance, improving overall appearance, making you appear more youthful and increasing your self-confidence.

Your face is the first part of you that people notice, and a pleasing countenance will help you feel confident and assured.

Today's facelift techniques are designed to tighten deep tissues, firm up excess loose skin and address volume changes that occur with aging. The goal of a facelift is to deliver your most youthful and natural look. Heredity, skin texture and the underlying bone structure of your face all play a role in how many years your facelift will remove and, to some extent, how long these changes will last.

Facelifts are not one size fits all; the procedure is dictated by your facial characteristics. In some, the deeper facial tissues may be repositioned or tightened to restore a more youthful contour and shape. In others, removal or addition of fat or other soft-tissue fillers may be necessary to achieve optimal results.

Basic to all facelifts is that excess skin is removed to yield a smoother, firmer facial appearance. One important goal of every facelift is to hide incisions, so that following surgery you can easily camouflage them with hair or makeup. The placement and length of incisions vary, depending on the facelift technique that best suits you. A facelift incision typically starts in the front of the ear, wrapping around the earlobe, with variations going up into the hairline of the temple, or behind the ear. Your doctor will help you determine the best technique to meet your individual needs.

Facelifts can also improve your neck, with your surgeon treating cord-like neck bands through a small incision placed under your chin, and through the same incision remove excess fat and tighten neck muscles. Excess neck fat can also be removed through a very small incision (or incisions) using liposuction.

After your facelift, you may feel tightness and you can expect some swelling, which

the face, neck, d?colletage, and hands.

Microdermabrasion is usually performed in a series of treatments to increase benefits and is frequently combined with a light chemical peel to further enhance results. Although your skin may be slightly pink following treatment, you will be able to immediately return to work and social activities.

In the last ten years there's been a huge increase in FDA-approved products available for office treatment of facial changes due to aging. In the right hands, improvement can be dramatic. Your plastic surgeon is now equipped with treatments to quickly soften creases, restore more youthful contours, and freshen your appearance. These treatments are no substitute for the longer-lasting more comprehensive corrections possible with surgery, but are frequently used to complement surgical results and, in many situations, are a reasonable alternative. Although less invasive than surgery, their effects are generally temporary. Your result will be determined by the product used and the training, skill, judgment, and experience of the professional administering your treatment. Two categories of anti-aging injectables are neuromodulators and soft tissue fillers.

NeurOMODulATOrS

These products target `dynamic' creases, those wrinkles that occur with different facial expressions. By relaxing the specific small muscles you use in creating facial expressions, neuromodulators, such as Botox?, stop you from wrinkling the overlying skin, which in turn prevents you from deepening facial creases in the treated area. Neuromodulators can help soften wrinkle areas such as `crow's feet' or forehead creases. Effects last for three months or more. Brands introduced in the United States are variations of the botulinum toxin A molecule and include Botox?, Dysport?, and Xeomin?.
