Brevard Community College’s Early Childhood Education Program Students are encouraged to begin the Early Childhood Education program by enrolling in the Child Development and Early Intervention College Credit Certificate. All courses in the certificate apply to the Associate in Science Degree in Early Childhood Education. Completion of the 480 hour requirement can occur while taking the college courses and may continue after completion of the college courses. Check with Florida DCF to find out the length of time given to complete the 480 hours. The FCCPC meets the requirement for a VPK teacher.?Students must complete a total of 80 hours of activity time with young children in addition to and while enrolled in the four FCCPC courses; EEC 1001, EEC 1200, CHD 1200 and EEC 2710. Structured activity time with young children may occur at a BCC Child Care Center or at any licensed Child Care Center. Check with the Center of interest to identify their background check requirements as this may differ from BCC’s Center requirements. A local background check for students who conduct activity hours at a BCC Child Care Center is required for EEC 1001 and CHD 1200. A high school diploma or GED and a minimum age of 18 years old is required to receive the FCCPC credential. ** Noted courses require students to perform planned activities with young children. Students who wish to volunteer at a BCC Child Care Center must secure a Local Background check. Information about this process will be provided by the Professor or students may contact a BCC Child Development Center. Students may register for noted courses first and obtain proper background check once enrolled in the course.Degree and Certificate Requirements: It is the responsibility of the student to meet the established degree requirements for the degree or certificate being sought at Brevard Community College. Work history and transcripts are to be provided. Students must be enrolled in the Early Childhood Education AS degree in order to receive CAEL. Transfer courses do not qualify for CAEL.Several Early Childhood Education courses require a level of involvement of a minimum of 15 to 20 hours per semester with children (planned activities with young children) in a licensed childcare center or family center. ? BCC students who wish to do planned activities with young children at a BCC Child Care Center will need to be prepared to secure a local background check. Information about this process will be provided by the Professor or students may contact a BCC Child Development Center. Students may register for EEC 1001 and CHD 1200 first and obtain proper background check once enrolled in the course. The Florida Child Care Professional Certificate (FCCPC) consists of four college courses, EEC 1001, EEC 1200, CHD 1200 and EEC 2710, with a total of 80 supervision hours as part of the four courses, plus 400 hours of experience in a child care setting serving children ages birth through eight years of age. The FCCPC meets the requirements to be a VPK teacher. ? Students must complete a total of 80 hours of supervision time in addition to and while enrolled in the four FCCPC courses. The 400 hours may be acquired up to five years after completion of the four college courses. Contact the Florida DCF to find out specifics on completion of the 480 hours. For students who do not work in a licensed center or a licensed family home the student must allot time during the semester to complete the planned activities with young children. BCC’s Early Childhood Education Centers provide opportunities for planned activities with young children. Contact your college instructor regarding options to complete these hours. You must have a high school diploma or GED and be 18 years of age to receive the FCCPC credential. For information on the Florida Department of Children and Families 40 clock-hour training certificate, go to. Director’s Renewal requirement – the following courses are approved by the Florida Department of Children and Families as applying toward the Director’s Renewal: any 3 credit hour course with course code of EEC or CHD as well as EEX 2010, MUE 2211 and ARE 2000. Visit childcare to read the most current DCF requirements. Courses with EDF, EME or EDG codes will NOT satisfy the Director’s Renewal requirements. EEC 2521 Child Care & Education Organizational Leadership Management [3 credit hours] is not required for the AS degree or Certificate but may be used as an elective credit and is one course out of several courses that will meet requirements to receive the “Director’s Renewal”.
