INTRODUCTION

Beloved, the apostle Paul wrote in Romans 8:28 (NKJV) “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Using this New Testament verse helps give light and purpose to God’s plan in the life of Joseph. Many wonder why a good man has to suffer bad things, but all one has to do is look at the life of Jesus and rest their case. Joseph’s life has followed a sometimes bleak path of disappointments, days of delight and duties that sometimes seemed like a dead end. Nevertheless, God was working it out for his good and God’s ultimate purpose. The plans of God are never without purpose.

This week’s lesson begins to pull together why Joseph had to suffer separation and disappointments, but God is just keeping and fulfilling His covenant commitment to Abraham and his seed. Genesis 12:2-3 says, “And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”

The testimony of Joseph has continued to center around his integrity. Now God uses a famine in the land of Egypt and its surrounding neighbors to bring the separated strings of His plan together and tie a knot of understanding and purpose. After being promoted to Prime Minister in Egypt, Joseph is given a wife who has born to him two sons (Genesis 41:37-57). Now the famine prophesied by Joseph brings his brothers from Canaan to Egypt to buy food. Little did they know that the one they bowed before was their dreamer brother Joseph, who foresaw this in his dream in Genesis 37. Now through a series of purposeful events, Joseph prepares to reveal himself to his long-lost brothers and be the savior of his family’s posterity.

LESSON OUTLINE

“GOD’S COVENANT COMMITMENT UNFOLDS AND PRESERVES JOSEPH’S FAMILY”

I. Revelation of God’s Power (Reconciliation). Genesis 45:1-4

After nearly 22 years of separation and the presumable death of Joseph, his brothers are about to get the shock of their lives… “I am Joseph.” The power of reconciliation. Dr. Warren Wiersbe defines reconciliation as “a means of bringing together that which was separated or at war.” Joseph reveals to his brothers that he was truly alive and God had allowed them to see his face as a savior and not a judge. He was moved with compassion and overwhelmed with tears. For over 15 years, he had been separated from his blood kin, but God’s power had prevailed to bring about reconciliation. Praise God!

II. Revelation of God’s Plan. Genesis 45:5-8

A young lad of 17 years of age has now become a great man of purpose. He was brought from his parent’s favorite to a pit of jealousy, sold into a place of slavery, scorned because of his integrity, put into a prison of purpose and raised to a place of prominence. Truly all of this proves that God had a plan and Joseph learned in the land of solitude what God’s plan was for his life.

Do you know what God’s plan is for your life? It is centered in the words of Paul in Ephesians 2:10, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” God does not save people to allow them to live out their lives for their own purpose, but for His! (Read Romans 8:28).

III. Revelation of God’s Preservation. Genesis 45:9-13

Now that Joseph has shown his heart’s desire to make his brothers know their actions against him were used by God to fulfill His own purpose, he reveals how God will use him to preserve their posterity! “Haste ye, and go up to my father…” Verse 9 reveals the next step in the plan of preservation. Let our father know that God has prepared a place and provision to preserve the heritage of Abraham and fulfill his promised purpose. (Read Genesis 15:12-21).

Verse 13 blesses me because again, after around 15 years or so, God’s blessing on Joseph’s life has reached a zenith, and he wants his father to know the blessing of God’s covenant commitment in their lives. “…ye shall haste and bring down my father hither.” (vs. 13). This is reminiscent of the command of the father in Luke 15:22-24. God shall wipe away the tears of sadness and bring the joy of gladness upon His people. Praise God for His preservation!

IV. Revelation of God’s Passion. Genesis 45:14-15

Joseph exercised the heart of Godly passion and forgiveness by embracing his brothers and conversing with them to come on down and live with him. His last words to his brethren are found in Genesis 50:19-26, “And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God? But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.  Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.  And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father's house: and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years.  And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph's knees.  And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.  And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence.  So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.”

CLOSING

One of these days our Lord will return for us and we will have a great reunion, remembering how much He had done to preserve us because we are his family. “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. And I will be found of you, saith the LORD: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the LORD; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.” (Read Jeremiah 29:11-14)
