It was written at the height of British Imperialism around the globe. Kipling is known for his great pride in his country and his support of British Imperialism. Many of his written works portray this through his characters. The Jungle Book is no exception. This story is set in the jungle of India and although it is a children’s book, the characters symbolize much of what Kipling believed was right about the British colonization of India. We will be viewing The Jungle Book in class. During this time, you will analyze how the characters in the film reflect the actions and intentions of British Imperialism in India during the late 1800s. Evaluate the messages evidenced in the different characters and consider how they each symbolize different elements of British imperialism.
