Imperialism is the practice of extending a nation’s control over other territories. The United States became an imperial nation in the late 1800’s with the annexation of Hawaii, and through its involvement in the Spanish American War. But the overseas empire of the US was small compared to other colonial empires of the time. Oftentimes, they were looking to take over the trade of valuable items. Examples of this include tea (The British in India), gold or diamonds (in many African colonies), or even fruit (many Pacific or Caribbean colonies). On this map, you will mark the major colonies with the following colors:

United Kingdom of Great Britain - Red

The Netherlands, or Dutch - Orange

France - Blue

Germany - Yellow

Italy - Brown

Portugual - Green

Belgium – Black

Ottoman Empire - Purple

Africa

In 1914, only 2 African countries were independent from European colonization:

Ethiopia – Mark with an I.

Liberia – A colony founded by freed American slaves. Its capital, Monrovia, was named after the American President, James Monroe, who was a supporter of the freed slave colony. Mark Liberia with an I.

Italy – Color the Italian colonies Brown.

France – Controlled what was called French West Africa. This included Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, Mali, Niger and Chad. Color this region Blue.

France also controlled what was called French Equatorial Africa which includes the countries of Gabon and the Central African Republic. Color these two countries Blue.

Great Britain – Color these areas Red.

By 1914, the great Spanish and Portuguese empires over the Americas were over. However, some smaller colonies remained.

Ottoman Empire – The Ottoman Empire had ruled most of the Middle East for 600 years. Color in Purple the following countries.

Europe – Now color in the Imperial countries.

Color Germany Yellow.

Color Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland) Red.

Color Portugal Green.

Color the Netherlands Orange.

Color France Blue.

Color Italy Brown.

Color Belgium Black.

Pencil in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which included Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Croatia.

Write Russia over all of Russia, west to the border of Poland in the west, and Romania in the South.

You are done! As you can see, much of the world in 1914 had been carved up by the European Powers.

Extra Credit – A saying of the early 1900’s was “The Sun never sets on the British Empire”. Why do you think this was said? For extra credit, write why you think this was said on the top of your map.
