Band Rock Project-1960s

Melora Trowell

The British Invasion: In 1962, the British Invasion started with rock bands such as the Beatles and The Troggs. They were influenced by American music such as soul music, rhythm and blues, and beach music. These bands were very popular in Europe and their popularity made their way to other parts of the world. This helped rock and roll spread internationally and make British artists better known. Many of the British artists topped the charts with number one hits such as “I Want to Hold Your Hand” by the Beatles. The British Invasion had their own kind of rock music different from the ones before by being based on drums and guitars and producing their own music as singer-songwriters.

Garage Rock: Garage rock got its title because it was believed that the bands practiced in their garages. It was a form of amateurish rock and was most popular in the mid 60’s. They were about high school trauma most of the time with “lying girls” being common to sing about. Bands were influenced by The British Invasion bands which also helped them gain popularity in the nation. A lot were not very good and most failed with commercialism at first. Later on around 1966, they started to become more popular commercially and artistically. However, by 1968, a lot of the bands’ popularity went down. Some of the bands were the Trashmen and the Rivieras.

Pop Rock: Pop rock was more known as a “softer” rock and roll aimed towards teenagers. Pop rock was known as being more commercial, accessible, and shorter. A lot of the music was to emphasize musical abilities rather than reflecting existing trends. Some pop rock artists and bands were Bob Dylan and the Temptations.

Blues rock

British blues musicians of the late 1950s and early 60s had been inspired by the acoustic playing leading to the increase in British bands playing American Blues rock. Increasingly they adopted a loud amplified sound, often centered around the electric guitar, based on the Chicago blues. Early blues-rock bands often emulated jazz, playing long, involved improvisations. Bands like the Bluesbreakers, which Eric Clapton was a member of, and Fleetwood Mac are perfect examples of Blues rock.

Folk Rock

Folk rock reached its peak of commercial popularity in the period 1967-1968. Folk rock was a reaction to the British invasion where American rockers turned back to their roots, although many British bands such as the Beetles took part in folk rock. Folk rock utilizes traditional music and new compositions in a traditional style, usually on acoustic instruments. Artists like Bob Dylan are a classic example of the folk rock style.

Psychedelic Rock

Psychedelic rock is a style of rock music that is inspired or influenced by psychedelic culture and attempts to replicate and enhance the mind-altering experiences of psychedelic drugs such as LSD. This common type of rock used folk and blues rock played in creating psychedelic rock. Psychedelic rock particularly took off in California's emerging music scene in 1965 but reached its apogee in the last years of the decade. 1967 the Beatles release their definitive psychedelic statement in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, including the controversial track "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and the Rolling Stones responded later that year with Their Satanic Majesties Request.

He first gained fame in the United States when he performed at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. He then headlined at the Woodstock in 1969 which was a very iconic time in his career. Recipes

“Tunnel of Fudge Cake”

1 1/2 cups butter or margarine, softened

6 eggs

1 1/2 cups sugar

2 cups Pillsbury's Best All Purpose Flour

1 package Pillsbury Two Layer Size Butter cream Double Dutch Frosting Mix

2 cups chopped walnuts or pecans

Oven 350 degrees F. Bundt Cake

Generously grease Bundt pan. In large mixer bowl, cream butter at high speed. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Gradually add sugar; beat at high speed until light and fluffy. By hand, stir in flour, dry frosting mix and walnuts until well blended. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake at 350 degress F. for 60 to 65 minutes. Cool 1 hour; remove from pan. Cool completely before serving. Tips: Butter cream Double Dutch Frosting Mix and walnuts are essential to the success of this recipe. Since the cake has the softened tunnel of fudge, ordinary doneness tests can not be used. Test after 60 minutes by observing a dry, shiny brownie-type crust. Cake may be baked in 10-inch tube pan at 350 degreees F. for 60 to 65 minutes. Serve cake right side up as for a pound cake. *Pillsbury's Best Self-Rising Flour is not recommended for use in this recipe. High Altitude Adjustment--5,200 Feet. Bake at 275 degrees F. for 60 to 65 minutes.

The “Tunnel of Fudge Cake” is considered a recipe from the 1960’s because it used the Bundt pan. A bundt pan is used to bake desserts in a ring shape. The bundt pan was first introduced at the Pillsbury Bake Off by Ella Helfrich in 1966. It wasn’t until the 1960’s that the Bundt pan became popular, before nearly no one had ever heard of it. The “Tunnel of Fudge Cake” also uses an instant package of icing that is no longer made, making it impossible to make the exact recipe for the cake.

"Lemon Bars”

1 cup Gold Medal Flour

1/2 cup butter or margarine

1/4 cup confectioners' sugar

2 eggs

1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 tsp. Baking powder

1/4 tsp. Salt

2 tbsp. Lemon juice.

Heat oven to 350 degrees F. (Mod.). Measure flour by dipping method or by sifting. Blend flour, butter, and confectioners' sugar thoroughly. Press evenly in square pan, 8 X 8 X 2". Bake 20 minutes. Beat rest of the ingredients together. Pour over crust and bake 20 to 25 min. More. Do not over bake!

“Lemon Bars” were first being tested in the 1960’s even though the recipe was not in any cooking magazine published in the 1960’s. It was not until the 1980’s that the recipe was put into a cooking magazine. Although the recipe was not in a cooking magazine, it was included in the 1963 version of the Betty Crocker’s Cookie Book. By the late 1970’s almost everyone had a recipe for “Lemon Bars”.
