b. Essential Questions – How did newspapers influence American colonists?
3. Lesson Objectives: Standards -
a. SS.8.A.1.1: Provide supporting details for an answer from text, interview for oral history, check validity of information from research/text, and identify strong vs. weak arguments.
b. SS.8.A.1.6: Compare interpretations of key events and issues throughout American History.
c. SS.8.A.1.7: View historic events through the eyes of those who were there as shown in their art, writings, music, and artifacts.
d. SS.8.A.3.2: Explain American colonial reaction to British policy from 1763 - 1774.
e. SS.8.A.3.6: Examine the causes, course, and consequences of the American Revolution.

6. Materials Needed: (Include primary sources you will use in this lesson)
a. Computers and internet access
b. Poster board or blank copy paper
c. Art supplies such as markers, pencils, and rulers
d. Revolutionary War Newspaper Handout
7. Steps to Deliver the Lesson: A detailed, step by step description of how to deliver the lesson and achieve the lesson plan objectives. These should be sufficiently clear so that another teacher could implement the lesson without guidance.
a. This activity works best as an enrichment activity that students work on as they learn about the Revolutionary War.
b. Give students the Revolutionary War Newspaper handout and go over the details of the project.
c. Have students visit and read the October 7, 1776 issue of the Boston Gazette
i. Discuss the letter written by Washington and Drummond
ii. How is this newspaper different from newspaper today? Any similarities?
d. In groups, have students visit and explore the chronicles created by PBS
i. Are the chronicles primary source documents? No.
e. Students should then be given time to work on their newspaper either in class or at home.

a. Class discussion of the Boston Gazzette
b. Group exploration of the PBS Liberty! chronicles

a. Students can be given the option of making the newspaper out of paper or creating a digital newspaper. Furthermore, students in need of accommodation could be encouraged to make a podcast.
10. Technology Integration: Describe activities incorporating technology; e.g., address lesson content through online resources.
a. The class uses a project to discuss the Boston Gazette
b. Students use computers to explore the PBS Liberty! Website
c. Students can use MS Publisher, InDesign, Word, Garage Band, or another piece of media software to create their newspaper.
11. Lesson Closure: Description of methods to draw ideas together, review concepts, etc.
a. With access to high volume printing the classes newspaper can be combined into an anthology and printed or shared via PDF.
