Twenty-two letter carriers were attacked in Brooklyn last year. Post Offices nationwide will host local events and carrier awareness during National Dog Bite Awareness week which is April 14th-20th. More than 5,700 letter carriers were attacked in 2018. All attacks are preventable through responsible pet ownership. This event will highlight how new technology is being used to encourage owner responsibility, as well as how the number of dog attacks in all geographic areas can be more easily identified. The Postal Service is asking media to use this hashtag in dog bite awareness posts #StopDogBitesThe Postal Service places the safety of its employees as a top priority. If a letter carrier feels threatened by a dog, or if a dog is loose or unleashed, the owner may be asked to pick up mail at a Post Office until the letter carrier is assured the pet has been restrained. If the dog is roaming the neighborhood, the pet owner’s neighbors also may be asked to pick up their mail at the area’s Post Office. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.# # #For U.S. Postal Service media resources, including broadcast quality video and audio and photo stills, visit the USPS Newsroom.
