BCPS Vaping Task Force Robin Bartleman, a BCPS Board member shared some of theconcerns with vaping that is occurring within the school district. The district has a Vaping Task Force to deal with the increase use of vaping devices use within the schools. One of the biggest concerns is the use of THC with these devices. Members of the task force presently includes (Broward Sheriff’s office, National Guard, United Way, and many other groups including our TFP).Over a 200% increase in vaping and moving down into the middle schools. Explained the new board policy. Need to start at the 5th grade up to 12 grade. Need to educate both students and parents. Need help with the educational component. County Commissioner Beam Furr, a former teacher, may be a good champion to help with our efforts. Students appear to be getting their devices online and we have to look for ways to make sure we are not making our children criminals. Paula Woods, at Western HS has the largest SWAT chapter, should be able to get a TFP meeting at the school. Next task force meeting is June 26, 10- 11:30 AM at Lauderdale Manors, 1400 NW 14th Court. Debra Kerns: 954-803-8012 is the contact person. Trying to get students watch a program related to this topic. Get the message everywhere about the dangers of vaping. Robin suggested that at the task force meeting to ask for a representative from the school system to attend our TFP meeting. Amy shared that Holy Cross already has two health educators who have passed their background checks and could assist with programs at the schools.IV. Committee UpdatesCommunications: The May newsletter was sent out before the end of the month. It next one goes out in August. Send your information to Dr. Hummel for that issue. Key items right now will be the World Tobacco Day Award and the Vaping Task Force. Need to know that date of the Hockey game, first and then we can try to get funding for tickets for the game. Then we could advertise that we have tickets to distribute. The date for the awards event is 9/19/19. L. Delaughter will send out the nomination sheet for the awards.Education & Advocacy: Dr Hummel presented at the Debbie Wasserman-Shultz press conference-Protect Act-give FDA and CDC more money to address vaping. There was some discussion on the victim being punished and not seller in the whole vaping issue. We need the minutes of the BESH meeting. Dr Hummel presented at the South Florida Collaborative Cancer Coalition Association. Suggested that they attend our TFP meetings. Andy will send an invitation to their list serve about attending our meetings. Dr. Hummel will send out the agenda on Mailchimp. The City of Fort Lauderdale have asked the city attorney to work on raising the age of sale to 21 and regulating vape shops, based on the Alachua County ordinance. JM. Pierobon shared that Commissioners Moraltis and McKinzie and Mayor Trantalis, need to hear support from the community for the 21 ordinance because they do not seem as enthusiastic as the other commissioners about raising the legal age to purchase tobacco to 21.With what is already going on in the school district, does not seem that a survey will give us any additional information. Still in conversation with Ted Deutch’s office and it looks like the August recess might be a possibility.Beach Sweep: Number 45; 353 volunteers, Over 11,000 cigarette butts, 195 lbs. of trash, 28 lbs. of recyclables. This is a large increase from 35 volunteers at the first event. Still looking for core volunteers.Membership: Andy shared that Sybil Cherian collected about 10 membership forms on World No Tobacco Day at the government center.Point of Sale: No updates. Need to consider license of vape shops in the future.SWAT: B. Hummel informed everyone that our TFP nomination won the World Tobacco Day Award and was the only student group that received an award. The Student Advisor Board of Florida was the award winner. Press release at the state level, but no local coverage of this award. School board would like to see a chapter at every secondary school in the distract, but Broward Department of Health only has funds for 21 chapters. That leaves about 60 schools without a group. Looking for ways to address this issue. L. Delaughter, is looking for the money to fund this shortfall. ($180,000) Looks like a community meeting in November will now occur.V. Finance ReportL. Delaughter, informed TFP members that there is no updates at this time.VI. New Business Dr. Hummel created a TFP Team for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Last Saturday in October 26.
