Framework for the Meet the Masters Program
The Meet the Masters Program was developed for use in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. Prints of major artworks have been selected to complement the Social Studies curriculum at each grade level. The subject matter of these prints fit into the following categories:
Kindergarten: Pictures are Fun
Grade One: The Family
Grade Two: Adventure
Grade Three: City and Country
Grade Four: We All Lead Different Lives
Grade Five: American History: Living in America
The program has been designed to accommodate five classroom visits. During each visit, the volunteer will present two prints to the class. These 'pairs' have been selected for interesting discussion about the Social Studies' topic and the artwork itself. Each print has an information sheet to guide the volunteer in the presentation. Included is a short biography of the artist. This is designed to inform the volunteer - not to be read to the children. Volunteers should choose the information that they feel would catch the children's interest.
There is a description of the artwork provided for the volunteer. This summary points out the style and details of the print. The information should be enough for the volunteer to lead the class discussion comfortably.
Sample questions for discussion are provided for each pair of prints. They are designed to bring out differences and similarities in the prints. The questions may be about style, subject matter, feelings or may relate to the Social Studies' curriculum. Volunteers are encouraged to add questions of their own, to allow for class discussion. There are no right or wrong answers; the idea is to view and discuss artwork.
Activities related to the information will be included as a follow-up exercise for teaches to use as enrichment at their discretion.

What is a Rotating School?
Schools that receive Meet the Masters prints through the PONY, Broward's intra-school mail system, need to be aware of the process for sharing prints among schools.
The Meet the Masters Program is based on five classroom presentations each year. The art prints will arrive at your school in a large black portfolio, according to the predetermined schedule, known as the ‘Print Rotation Schedule’.
Included in each portfolio is a pair of art prints selected to be presented at each grade level - kindergarten, first, second, third, fourth and fifth. For program organization purposes, each portfolio is labeled with a letter (A-G) and a number. All portfolios with the same letter hold the same prints; the number simply indicates how many copies of portfolio are being used during the school year. Refer to the Portfolio Print Listing for Rotating Schools (pages 5-7) for the titles of prints in each portfolio.
In order to ensure that all students, schools and volunteers are able to implement the Meet the Masters Program, a schedule of dates have been established to send the art prints to the next school. This Print Rotation Schedule considers the District holidays, teacher workdays and testing days established for each school year. (Schools that own their prints and do not participate in the rotation system may select to use a different presentation schedule.)
Schools receiving the prints via the PONY must adhere to the established dates. If a school is late sending the prints to the next school, that school will have less time to make classroom presentation, which will negatively impact the effectiveness of the program. If your school does not receive prints before the scheduled date, please contact the school that is sending the prints before contacting Volunteer Services.
Volunteer Services is available to assist you throughout the year and can be contacted at (754) 321-2300 or volunteer@.

Guidelines for Meet the Masters Volunteers
All school volunteers must be screened by the Safety and Security office pursuant to the District’s policy and guidelines, including all Meet the Masters volunteer presenters. The application is found online at getinvolved.
To verify that all Meet the Masters volunteers have completed the application and are approved to serve as a volunteer, please ask your School Volunteer Liaison for a listing of approved volunteers.
Before assigning Meet the Masters volunteers to the classroom, please review the following guidelines with them:
1. Your volunteer involvement is limited to the school site, school hours and at school-sponsored activities and your main concern while engaged in these activities should be the safety and education of all students.
2. You must not give students medication.
3. You shall not disclose or share with anyone in any manner (written, electronically or verbally) any student information, which may include academic performance, behavior, disabilities and personal or family matter, obtained from any source (written records, verbal communications, or direct observation), except for information dealing with a reasonable suspicion that a child is abused, abandon or neglected, which must be reported to a school administrator (FL 10102.22, 1002.221, F.S. 39.201).
4. You will be assigned only to staff members and/or students requesting help. You may not supervise a classroom or discipline students; these are the responsibilities of the teacher and school.
5. You should set a good example for students by your manner, appearance and behavior.
6. You must wear a name badge for identification when helping with school activities which is to be scanned each time you enter and leave the school campus.
If your school is utilizing the STAR computer system for volunteer and visitor check-in, please remember that the Meet the Masters volunteers should check in and out so that service hours are correctly recorded. If your school is not using the STAR System, volunteers should be logging their service hours on paper logs provided by the school.
Meet the Masters Coordinator Job Description
Meet the Masters is an art history appreciation program for elementary school students.
Utilizing volunteer presenters, Meet the Masters helps students to understand and appreciate works
of art. It does not replace the art curriculum and/or art educators.
|Qualifications: |Enthusiasm, good organizational skills, persistent, reliable and punctual, acquiescent, relatable to others and an|
| |interest in art. |
|Duties: |The Meet the Masters coordinator works under the direction of and in cooperation with the principal, art teacher |
| |and School Volunteer Liaison. Activities include: |
| |Attending the Meet the Masters training sessions; |
| |Planning the Meet the Masters Program at an individual school with principal, art teacher and faculty |
| |representatives; |
| |Recruiting volunteers at Open House, PTA Meetings, etc.; |
| |Developing and distributing a master list of Meet the Masters volunteers and their phone numbers; |
| |Polling volunteers for scheduling preferences; |
| |Determining classroom presentation schedules and distributing them to volunteers, art teacher, faculty and school |
| |office; |
| |Meeting with volunteers to go over school procedures regarding Meet the Masters Program; |
| |Examining art prints upon their arrival at school; |
| |Calling Meet the Masters volunteers prior to their presentations; |
| |Maintaining master list of Meet the Masters presentations; |
| |Ensuring that prints are sent to next school on designated date; |
| |Completing end-of-year evaluations for program after soliciting comments from teachers, students and volunteers. |
Scheduling Classroom Presentations
The development of a schedule for Meet the Masters classroom presentations will be one of the most important tasks in organizing the individual school program. The following suggestions are presented to assist school personnel as they develop this schedule:
• Remember to get the school’s schedule for lunch, P.E., art., etc. prior to the presentation schedule.
• Allow a 15-minute break between presentations by the same volunteers.
• Once the schedule is completed, distribute to faculty, principal and volunteers.
• All students, including exceptional education students, should be given the opportunity to take part in the Meet the Masters program.
• A volunteer presenter should be assigned to only one grade level in order to eliminate the necessity of preparing several presentations at the same time.
|OPTION A: |Presentations made at specific times requested by classroom teachers. |
| |For Example: |
| |First Grade: Monday at 10:00 a.m. |
| |Kindergarten: Thursday at 2:00 p.m. |
| |Fifth Grade: Friday at 11:45 a.m. |
| |*This option requires an extremely flexible schedule and a great deal of available time from the volunteer. |
|OPTION B: |Presentations made according to volunteers' availability. |
| |This option would not necessarily provide classroom presentations at the most convenient times for individual |
| |teachers. A schedule of the times the volunteer is available could be circulated so that teachers could select the |
| |preferred times for his/her class. |
|OPTION C: |Presentations made “back-to-back” by one volunteer. |
| |For Example: |
| |Val Volunteer conducts all presentations on Monday: |
| |Kindergarten: 10:00 -10:45 a.m. |
| |First Grade: 11:00 -11:45 a.m. |
| |Second Grade: 11:45 -12:15 p.m. |
| |Third Grade: 12:30 -1:00 p.m. |
| |Fourth Grade: 1:15 -1:45 p.m. |
| |Fifth Grade: 2:00 - 2:30 p.m. |
| |*This option accommodates volunteers who are at school for one day only for Meet the Masters, especially a community |
| |volunteer. |
|OPTION D: |Presentations are made according to the consensus of time preferences of individual teachers in conjunction with the |
| |volunteer’s schedule. |
