School Advisory Council (S.A.C.) ~Minutes~

1. Call Meeting to order by Jill Williams at 3:04 PM.

2. Approve Meeting Minutes from May 25, 2016- approved by Mrs. Nichols. Correction needed to be made. Mrs. Nichols approved the corrected minutes.

Marcia Tavares seconded the corrected minutes.

3. SAC Bylaws Review- Will not be able to vote this meeting because do not have enough voting members. Asked to review the by-laws for next meeting if any changes need to be made.

4. Mission/Vision Review-presented by Dr. King- last revision in 2011. Given to faculty first to see if there needed to be any changes or revisions. No revisions or changes requested by faculty. Now giving option to SAC to review and suggest any revisions or changes.

• School Improvement Plan (SIP) Updates by Principal and Departments

• Guidance- Eric Belliard-not in attendance.

▪ Dr. King spoke to say that their transcripts will be available on Naviance. Entire College application process is on Naviance.

▪ Mr. Burgess-testing coordinator- Algebra I, II and Geometry retakes have been taking place the last two weeks. Reading retakes will start in October. PSAT will take place on October 19th. All 10th graders, 300-9th graders, and approximately 250 11th graders will take the PSAT.

• Reading/Writing – Anita Parsotan-new literacy coach-taking over for Mrs. Gomez-

▪ Downs. Focus in content areas on vocabulary, improving reading strategies for all subjects. A new Reading Coach’s Corner on the school’s website will be available soon. It contain resources that all students can use and will be consistently updated throughout the school year.

• Math – Melissa Nichols-Afterschool tutoring is headed by Mrs. Gerson-Mu Alpha

▪ Theta students will be used for tutoring. Initial meetings are taking place. PLC groups has started.

▪ Algebra Nation and Geometry nation has started for students to use-mimic EOC questions for practice and comprehension.

▪ Due to common planning, additional training is currently underway for Math teachers.

• Science – Fabian Calero

▪ Mr. Calero welcomed all the parents back from summer break.

▪ The Science Department have started their PLC (Professional Learning Communities) groups. The objective is to use data analysis of content material to drive lesson instruction.

▪ New Chemistry, Physics, and AP Physics books have been ordered. The AP Physics books are backordered.

▪ The Science Department has had training recently in , USA Test Prep, and strategies to increase school-wide literacy.

• Differentiated Accountability – Principal Leon-Leigh

▪ Discussed CANVAS-replacing Schoology-Teachers using it now. It is a management system for lessons, communication, turning in assignments, recording classes, and syncing with Pinnacle. The school is in the beginning stages of implementing the program into their classes.

▪ We are in the process of getting our website approved before it goes live.

▪ ZONE parent training on Oct. 24- At Coral Springs High School in the Auditorium.

▪ There are 2 National Merit finalists.

▪ Our Varsity Football. We are inviting everyone to the game Friday night against Deerfield Beach.

▪ Block Scheduling has been a success so far from faculty and students.

▪ Tardy is still a concern in the morning. CSPD has acknowledged it is a concern city-wide.

▪ Currently we have 2932 students. Student population is larger from last year. A concern was brought up if the Coconut Magnet Program will pull our students from Coral Springs High. Mrs. Leigh stated that it will not necessarily affect it because the city of Coral Springs has seen an increase in its population adding to the student population. Our school capacity is currently at 3100.

▪ Additional concern is parents are in the student parking lot dropping off students in the morning causing students to be tardy. Issue is being addressed with Security team.

▪ The elevator is scheduled to be refurbished-will be down for approximately 4 weeks. Repairs will begin in October.

▪ Mrs. Brown- Assistant Principal stated that there is a Chipotle Night fundraiser for the cheerleading team from 4-9 PM at the Coral Springs location.

5. New Business-SAF-Mrs. Provost presented.

▪ Stated that a new surtax will be voted on in November’s election. The tax will help support the remodeling of parks and help update or restore police and fire equipment such as the installation or purchase of body cameras for the police department.

▪ Parent Education Committee- SAT exam approved for juniors again. It was approved for just the English and Math portion of the exam. Writing not included because it is not required by in-state schools for admission requirements.

▪ Boundary meetings coming up-looking for volunteers to be a part of the boundary meetings. Notify Mrs. Provost if you want to be a part of the committee.

▪ Accreditation-parent interview Oct. 24 at 4 PM at the Pompano Administrative Center

▪ Naviance-big push for it at the SAF meetings. Objective that all students after high school will go to college or a trade school. It will help students to figure out what they need to do to obtain schloarships, or meet criteria to get into universities.

▪ Bullying Update at SAF meeting-Cyberbullying to be included as part of bullying.

▪ DUAL language program- K students with English as second language will take reading and math in both languages. Upon graduation from high school, will get extra recognition on the diploma. Not all schools have this program.
