Yellow Committee Meeting

The meeting began at 10 a.m. with Tammy Nuesmeyer presiding and Wynne Simpkins assisting.

Introductions were done.

Old Business

➢ Jane Mahowald shared statistics that she had obtained from the Ohio Board of Nursing website regarding the number of BSN educated nurses in Ohio.

o As of 2006 there were 2,239 BSN graduates

o This represents 37% of the total number of RNs in Ohio

o Goal is that by 2015 at least 50% of practicing RNs will have achieved a BSN or higher degree.

o An increase of 13%

New Business

➢ Tammy & Wynne met with the presidents of the education associations last week i.e. Hope Moon from the Ohio Council of Associate Degree Nurse Educators and Associates (OCADNEA) and Anna Marie Glorioso from the Ohio Organization of Practical Nurse Educators (OOPNE) to fill them in on the work of the Yellow Team and to invite to the meeting. Both were present at the meeting.

➢ Several topics were discussed with all of the groups

• The need for more valid research to support the BSN nurse and improved outcomes because of the education level, similar to Linda Aiken’s study.

• There is no clear number of BSN nurses in practice from which to start

• Barriers to increasing BSN prepared nurses: lack of clinical sites and faculty.

• Future health care needs and how they will differ – and how do we educate the nurse for those needs

• What motivation is there for the RN to go on for further education?

• The need to decrease barriers to further education

• Magnet status looks at patient outcomes and the satisfaction level of the nurses

• Employer support is the key to further education for nurses especially tuition reimbursement.

➢ Group reports after work sessions

▪ Group 1 – Highly educated nurse are prepared to fulfill evolving roles in a dynamic health care system…

• A position statement will be written with nursing skill sets and roles to be delineated

• Strategies will be suggested on educating nurses

▪ Group 2 – by 2015, at least 50% of practicing RN’s in Ohio will have a BSN or higher degree

• A list of available nursing programs in Ohio with their websites as well as pertinent questions for students to ask will be developed – who will maintain??

• Support for research studies related to the evidence that a BSN degree makes a difference in patient outcomes

▪ Group 3 – Establish a strategic plan that will equip nurses with competencies and skills to enable then to be effective leaders….

• A literature review will be done and a white paper will be developed concerning leadership topics in nursing curricula

• Educational curricula to include leadership topics

➢ The Group of Twenty (GOT Team) will have a conference call on June 5, 2008 with meetings scheduled on August 7, October 9 and December 4.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 p.m.

The next Yellow Team meeting is scheduled for September 9, 2008 at the ONA office from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
