Carbon Footprint

CARBON FOOTPRINT ASSIGNMENT Houten, February 3rd 2016.

Dear students,

During the visit of the students from Houten to Rome we will focus on your personal energy consumption.

We want you to do the following before the exchange:

- Fill in the form of energy consumption for one week (appendix 1)

- Fill in the results from this form on:

- Make a print screen of the results of your Carbon Footprint.

For the exchange in Rome, bring:

- The filled in form

- The results from the Carbon Footprint calculator (printed on paper)

- Bills from:

o Electricity company

o Energy (natural gas/oil…) company

o Water company

Pay attention to the following units when filling in “Household carbon footprint calculator” using

|[pic] Example Rene Alink |The unit used for Electricity is kWh. |

| |1 kWh = 3.6 MJ |

| | |

| |The unit used for natural gas can be expressed in kWh or therms: |

| |1 therm = 105 British Thermal Unit (BTU) |

| |1 BTU = 1055 J (average, based on 5th International conference on the |

| |properties of steam, 1956, London) |

| | |

| |Choose a unit for natural gas: kWh or therms. Knowing the amount of natural |

| |gas (in m3) you can easily calculate how much energy in Joules will be |

| |produced by using the heat of combustion or heating value of natural gas. Use|

| |the internet. Dutch students find this value for “aardgas” also in Binas. |
