Lesson Description

STUDENT OBJECTIVES

Students will work in groups of three to four using the primary source Darkwater by WEB DuBois Chapter 1to create a timeline for WEB DuBois as well as a family tree.

 

PROCEDURES: SESSION 1

|1. |The teacher will introduce the lesson to students. He or she will explain the importance of using primary resources. Students should |

| |understand what a primary resource is. |

| |Homework for the previous evening should have been for students to read Chapter 1 of Darkwater by WEB DuBois |

|2. | Students will be separated into groups of three or four. Each group will be given one piece of art paper and color pencils. |

|3. |All students will have a copy of the book. Using the first chapter of the book students will create a family tree for WEB DuBois. |

| |Family trees will be collected at the end of the period and displayed in the classroom. |

 

PROCEDURES: SESSION 2

|1. |The teacher will explain that working in the same groups, students will create a timeline of the life of WEB DuBois . |

|2. |Each group will be given a computer with access the Thinkfinity website: |

|3. |Students will use the information in chapter 1 to create a timeline of the life of WEB DuBois |

PROCEDURES: SESSION 3

EXTENSIONS / MODIFICATIONS

The reading assignment could be shortened to aid those who need accommodations. Instead of doing both activities, students can just complete the timeline.

Extension: Students can read WEB DuBois Credo and create a credo of their own.

 

STUDENT ASSESSMENT

Students will be assessed on accuracy of family tree and accuracy of timeline.
