Criteria Sought
The Buffalo Promise Neighborhood and the Buffalo Public Schools seek a highly motivated and successful Transformational Principal to provide the leadership needed to ensure that the goals, initiatives and expectations enumerated in the Buffalo Promise Neighborhood Proposal and those enunciated by the Buffalo Public Schools are successfully achieved. On the basis of input provided by representatives from the staff, administration, parents, Buffalo Public Schools and Buffalo Promise Neighborhood, the desired candidate is expected to have led a highly successful urban high school and possess many of the following attributes and skills.
An individual who models and reflects: ? A belief in each individual based on caring and an understanding that everyone can improve his/her respective performance and attain a higher level of success ? A belief that all students can learn if provided the appropriate opportunities ? Accountability and requires the same from others ? An understanding that schools exist for students and gives this primary consideration in the decision making process ? Collaboration and decisiveness ? Fairness and consistency, yet maintains flexibility in considering all aspects before rendering a decision ? High expectations for self and others ? Openness, accessibility and a willingness to listen and consider various aspects relative to an issue before making a decision
A leader who has demonstrated the ability to:
? Address the broader needs of students while recognizing that a high school's goal is to make each and every child ready for a career and/or college
? Be a student advocate, recognizing that the assumption of responsibility on the part of students is a condition of such advocacy
? Communicate effectively, recognizing that listening is an essential component of communication
? Do what it takes to get a job done successfully. ? Lead an urban high school to a high level of success ? Make sound decisions on the basis of information provided by and through data
? Manage in a manner that staff can direct their energies to address their respective responsibilities
? Motivate staff to adopt practices that will make a failing school a highly successful school
? Provide a safe atmosphere for all who are engaged in the school ? Work collaboratively in a team atmosphere with staff, Buffalo Promise
Neighborhood, Buffalo Public Schools, John Hopkins University and others engaged with the Buffalo Promise Neighborhood grant.
Qualifications
Candidates must hold a Master's degree, and a New York State School District Administrator (SDA), New York State School Supervisor (SAS), School District Leader (SDL), or School Building Leader (SBL) certificate by the time of appointment. Candidates must have a minimum of eight years combined certificated teaching and supervisory experience, with a minimum of two years at the supervisory level. Candidates with prior Principal or administrative experience in an urban school district or in a district with a large diverse population are preferred.
