All classes have storiesappropriate to their age group read to them.Phonics is taught through discrete sessions from FS to Year 2 and regular sessions in KS2. The school follows the FloppyPhonics Sound and Letters scheme, which provides a rigorousapproach to teaching phonics, for reading success. The scheme is matched to the New Curriculum. The phonic sessions are structured within built-in revision to ensure every child succeeds. The scheme uses a well-established set of characters to engage the children as they learn their phonics, decode words and read text. Phonic progress is tracked carefully throughout school. All children in Year 1 are screened in phonics in Summer Term.In KS1 children read individually with an adult. Some children have extra reading sessions in a small group or one to one reading with an adult. In KS1 and KS2 children have weekly reading comprehension sessions. During these sessions children will also increase and review their knowledge of grammar, punctuation and spelling. At the beginning of each school year class teachers provide parents with specific class information which explains how reading books are changed in their class. The children read books from reading schemes which have been colour banded according to levels of difficulty. We use a variety of different published books. They include books from: Oxford Reading Tree, Collins Big Cat, Rigby Star, Rigby Rockets and Pearson Bug Club844551212850In key stage 2 children read short novels of their choice or books from the banded reading scheme which has been extended to include books at an appropriate level. All children are required to share these books with their parents at home, in order to develop their decoding and comprehension skills. All children have a reading diary to provide a link between home and school. The Oxford Owls is a great free website to use at home to help with phonics and reading. ................
