INSTRUCTIONS FOR “BUILD THE BARN” AND “OH, NO!”

WORD GAMES

Oh, No!

I got the idea for this game from a Scholastic book called, 40 SENSATIONAL SIGHT WORD GAMES.

Then, I made my own game cards so I could change words or add different words as needed.

* Put sight word cards in a container that is easy for students to reach in and pull out a card (make sure it is not a container that they can see through).

* Students can do this activity with 2 or more players.

* At each turn, the student with the container should quickly draw out a word card and read it.

* If they can read the word, they can keep the card until the game is over.

* If they can’t read the word, they have to put their word card back.

* If they draw out one of the “Oh, No!” word cards, they have to put all of their cards back. They continue to play when it is their turn – trying to build up their amount of cards again.

* The winner is determined by who has the most cards at the end of the game.

* Students usually play this game sitting together with a partner or in a circle on the floor, passing the container around as they play.

Build the Barn

I got the idea for this game from either a Mailbox monthly book or a Carson-Dellosa monthly book.

Then, I made my own barn card, colored the spinner card, scanned it, and pasted it on a background on the computer.

(Note: Cut and paste cards to construction paper. Then, laminate playing cards so they can be written on with dry erase markers and reused.)

* Students can play with a partner or in a small group.

* Each student gets a barn game card and share one spinner card.

* They can use a pencil and a large paper clip for the spinner (using the eraser side down so the game cards will stay in good shape).

* They also need a stack of word cards (or the same cards I made for the “Oh, No!” game – minus the “Oh, No!” cards).

* Students take turns drawing a card and seeing if they can read it.

* For every word they get right, they get to spin on the spinner card to see what letter they land on.

* Whatever letter they land on, they right it in the correct box on the barn card. So, if they get a “b” it goes in the first box, “a” in the second box, and so on.

* If they get a letter they’ve already written on a previous turn, then they don’t get to write a letter that time.

* The winner (of each game played) is the first one to spell the word, barn, on their card.

* After winning a game, the student puts tally mark on their hay stack. Then, they play again.

* The winner (after playing more than once) is the one who has the most tally marks on their hay stack.
