IBWSC 2017GAT Project SummaryYou will be working with your group to complete this for submission on Thursday; there are helpful questions included to guide you and the group through this. Make sure they answer these questions.Project name: Mission MindfulGAT Name/Leader:Franklin/Joanne PohnBackground: Highlight the needs identified and being addressed by the project (link to themes and content of conference)Mission & Objectives: What you want to achieve (aims)?Following Professor Patrick Leman’s lecture on the mental health of people within the United Kingdom, the group was inspired to make a positive change within each of our societies. The slightest mention of the term “mental health” is commonly associated with negative connotations, these including depression and fatigue, rather than being more uplifting and including terms such as personal wellbeing and good health. According to the lecture, 80% of all U.K. citizens acquire an acute mental illness within their lifetime. Not only is this a serious problem, the pressures experienced by the youth is becoming more increasingly alarming, with 59% of students not only researching about, but discovering ways to commit suicide. We felt as an international community that these issues needed to be dealt with immediately. This topic is often uncomfortable for many to speak about to even those close to them, not allowing them to receive help or find ways to help themselves.Hence, the group created Mission Mindful, a unique programme that helps to try and assist people with mental health issues, by offering a variety of coping methods. Also, through this programme, we also help to educate people about the issue of mental health, with the aim of trying to reduce the stigma and raise awareness about mental health. This programme will include the creation of a website as the starting platform of the movement. The website will help to not only provide sustainability to the project, but also include chat rooms that allow you to anonymously ask for help and share your thoughts. This is the first step, leading up to the introduction of a variety of formats that can be applied to your own community or school. Such applications as an introductory evening in your school and the installation of confession boxes that allow you to receive help without the knowledge of others knowing. This helps start the programme, which we recommend to last around three months, with events throughout this time, featuring events such as local speakers addressing the topic. This will then lead to the climax of the programme, which will celebrate the work done and the recognition that this is only the start. The core aim of Mission Mindful is to reduce the stigma in mental health and discrimination worldwide. We want to provide people with techniques on mindfulness and wellbeing. Furthermore, we want to change the way people act towards those with mental health conditions.
