POSITION DESCRIPTION

1. This position works directly for the Correctional Lieutenant (Camp Commander).

2. Supervise and coordinate the work of assigned Correctional Officers in a conservation camp.

3. Perform other supervisory duties as required.

35% Supervise Custodial Staff

Supervise the work of Correctional Officers in the safe custody, discipline, and welfare of inmates in a conservation camp. Make inspection tours to see that Correctional Officers are alert and diligent in the performance of their duties. Convey to superiors complaints made by Correctional Officers and inmates. Provide on-the-job training for Correctional Officers; promote acceptable attitudes and behavior of inmates and rates inmates on conduct and productivity.

Supervise Correctional Officers assigned to transportation details and during emergency fire, flood, or search and rescue dispatches. Supervise Correctional Officers maintaining inmate timekeeping records and the security of the inmate time cards. Supervise staff operating the inmate canteen and making inventory orders food, maintains cleanliness, enforces health standards, and supervises the camp feeding program.

25% Supervise Camp Operation

As second in command, the Correctional Sergeant assumes the duties and responsibilities of the Correctional Lieutenant in their absence. These duties include acting as the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) Liaison for local law enforcement and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE). Review all camp purchases and preparation of all documents. Ensure camp operations compliance with the Interagency Agreement, State law, CDCR policies, operational guidelines, etc.

20% Administrative Duties

Take periodic counts of inmates; direct the inspection of inmate quarters for contraband, sanitary conditions, and orderliness. Develop procedures and post orders under the direction of the Correctional Lieutenant. Report infractions of rules/regulations, and irregular/suspicious occurrences, and take or recommend appropriate action. Conduct administrative disciplinary hearings on inmates. Complete employee performance reports for Correctional Officers assigned to camp.

15% Training

Ensure staff are in compliance with their required In-Service Training and any other departmental mandated training for custodial staff. Due to limited formal training in camp, the Correctional Sergeant will develop an active on-the-job- (OJT) program for all staff and submit training records to the institution monthly. Conduct staff meetings to provide updated information and training to keep staff informed utilizing MOU, CCR Title 15, OJT, Departmental/Local OP, etc.

5% Miscellaneous Job-Related Duties

Perform other custodial duties as required. Incumbent interacts with offenders, co-workers and supervisors. Work with the public and other agencies and maintain a professional demeanor as representatives of the Department.
