Additionally, Dr. Baker is certified in Activator and Total Body Modification techniques. PRODUCT/SERVICE

Purpose of the Product/Service

Baker Chiropractic & Acupuncture will offer chiropractic and acupuncture to its patients and community located in House Springs, Missouri. The purposes of these products are similar. They are both focused on bringing the body back to balance. Balance in this presentation means a couple of things. Acupuncture looks at balancing meridians, or energy pathways, that flow throughout the body. When each of the 12 main meridians is in balance the body has the opportunity to function at its greatest efficiency. This providing increased energy, immunity, and overall happiness. Chiropractic will address the musculoskeletal components of the body. Those components consist of, but are not limited to, back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, whip lash, sciatica, headaches, and any other joint pain caused by dysfunctional movement not caused by a disease.

Additional side products will be offered besides the two main treatment types. Nutritional supplements will be available for those patients that need additional nutrition or need supplementation to provide to best treatment plan. Cervical pillows will be available along with orthopedic supports for patients if so indicated upon treatment. Additional products are not limited to these and may change if patients may benefit from additional products.

The community that this practice will be located is in a growing community that has a range of ages. The chiropractic technique being used is a light force technique called equalizer. Acupuncture is also a low force technique that can be used on a person of any age. There would just be a choice in how to stimulate the acupuncture points by using needles, laser, or micro current. The community will find that the prices and the focus of the practice will include them. The practice will be family orientated and include acute care, wellness care, and sports enhancement care. With these benefits another chiropractor will be well received in this growing community.

Unique Features

There will be a few unique features to start and some may be added as seen necessary. The first unique feature is the doctor’s personality. Dr. Baker is fun and service orientated in all of his efforts. Dr. Baker will be educating patients every time they are in the office. This to further their improvement while understanding why chiropractic is working for them. This will also give them the ability to share about chiropractic and how it may make a difference for their friends.

Dr. Baker will also be able to treat over 2,000 diseases through the use of acupuncture. (National Institute of Health) This gives him the ability to treat additional disease that many chiropractors cannot offer without an acupuncture certification.

If Dr. Baker becomes aware of a niche that would move his practice into greater uniqueness then the steps would be taken to provide this unique care by attending the proper seminars or classes needed.

A survey may also be taken to see what type of hours patients are looking for as the patients are scheduled. This will provide feed back for when Dr. Baker is most needed in the office.

Stage of Development

Chiropractic, or Twei Nah (Chinese manipulation), and acupuncture have been around for nearly 4,000 years. Chiropractic as we know it today was inspired by D.D. Palmer back in 1896. These products have been around for many years and have provided results and benefits throughout their time. There is always some deviation or enhancement that is added and then claimed as being the newest technique; however the fundamentals are the same.

Additionally alternative medicine is showing constant signs of growing. As seen in a study done from 1990-1997 out of the people surveyed 11% of the people went to chiropractors. Over the seven year period there was an increase of 10% of the people seeing alternative therapies for health problems. Overall, chiropractic and acupuncture are growing areas of health care that are not showing signs of slowing.(JAMA. 280:1569-75. November 11, 1998)

Baker Chiropractic & Acupuncture is already built and will be adding on an addition to the existing building to accommodate an additional doctor. This building has been in operation for nearly 20 years and is located next to a highway.

Future Research and Development

Currently Dr. Baker’s father teaches acupuncture and sells products for Meridia Technologies. Dr. Baker plans on helping and eventually being a part of the teaching of acupuncture and an additional sales rep for Meridia Technologies.

Dr. Baker has been involved with Arthritis research in surveying a patient’s point of view on how well their care was administered. Dr. Baker has also attended TBM classes, Graston Technique class, SOT seminars, and is certified in Activator Protocal.

For continuing education in Missouri they require 24 hours per year, physician level instruction, approved by Board. 4 hours in boundary training or emergency procedures, HIV or infectious disease, 4 hours x-ray, 4 hours differential or physical diagnosis, or both, and 12 hours general continuing education.  Certification available for Meridian Therapy / Accupressure / Acupuncture (MTAA) and/or Insurance Consulting.  Each certification requires 12 hours annually each to maintain certification and those hours are considered in compliance with the general continuing education requirement. () Along with this Dr. Baker participates with Landmark Education to provide break through results for his clinic and patients.

Government Approvals

Chiropractors get professional training at schools accredited by the Council of Chiropractic Education (CCE). The Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree is administered at the end of the program with completion of all requirements. There are four national board exams administered by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. All four exams cover material presented in the graduate program and include basic sciences, physical examination, diagnosis, and treatment.

HIPPA compliancy will be in place and upheld.

Product/Service Limitations

The limitations of practice will be addressed by the state statute below:

MARKETING PLAN

Industry Profile

Current Size

Chiropractors held about 53,000 jobs in 2004. Approximately 58 percent of chiropractors are self-employed. Most chiropractors are in solo practice, although some are in group practice or work for other chiropractors. () Americans spend at least $50 billion every year on back pain, giving chiropractors just one area to focus on. () Chiropractors are not limited to only working with low back pain, but divided up into 50 states that creates $1 billion dollars per state per year in back pain alone.

With a total of 3 chiropractors in the area the population to D.C. ratio is 4,612 to 1. This is slightly lower than what the ideal number of 6,294 people per D.C. () In this rural community, House Springs, the current population has the greatest number of people who drive 30+ miles to work. This will allow for a larger population than that located within this single zip code. Dr. Baker will be located next to a highway where the population south of him will have to travel when heading towards the city for work.

Growth Potential

Chiropractic employment is expected to increase faster than average as consumer demand for alternative health care grows. Alternative health care is a nationwide trend that is seen today and is looking to continue into 2014. () House Springs also has a current growth rate of 4.98%. This is a positive indicator that the area is still growing and expanding.

Currently 11% of people nationwide use chiropractic care. This leaves room for growth and expansion into the other 89% of people. With the growth of House Springs and the number of people still not utilizing chiropractic as a health alternative, there is a growing market for chiropractors.

Geographic Locations

Chiropractic is located throughout the country and is not limited in one area or another. Nationally there is one chiropractor for every 5,100 people. In Missouri there is one chiropractor per 3,512 people. In House Springs there will be one chiropractor per 4,612 people. This is higher than the Missouri average and nearing that of the country ratio.

Dr. Baker will be practicing Total Body Modification (TBM). There is one other doctor in the area that does do this technique. ()This technique is light force and may be used on anyone.

Dr. Baker will also be practicing activator technique. He is the only doctor in his zip code that will have the basic activator rating. () This technique will treat many older and younger people along with extremities since it is light force.

Industry Trends

Chiropractic is the fastest-growing and second-largest primary health care profession.

There are approximately 60,000 doctors of chiropractic (D.C.) in active practice in the United States spread from rural areas to inner cities. More than 10,000 students are currently enrolled in chiropractic educational programs accredited by a federally-recognized body (CCE). ()

With acupuncture there will be continuing updates in Dr. Baker’s Acugraph machine. This testing device will eventually be converted into a treating device. This will decrease treatment time and increase productivity. Patients will also be able to see how they are improving as meridian graphs are compared and evaluated between treatments.

Seasonality Factors

There is normally a decrease in the months of January and February. This leads to increased income during the month of March and April as people are getting back in shape for summer. There is also an increase in October as it is recognized as the month of Chiropractic.

Profit Characteristics

Based on industry standards data from the RMA of 2006, the compensation that is paid to a chiropractor ranged from 28.7% to 11.3%. This can be looked at from the median level of individual income that was $75,000 to $89,000 since 2002. These numbers are actually larger than the prior survey which stated $60,000 to $70,000. (9th Annual Survey)

Distribution Channels

There will be different ways that the services of Dr. Baker may be made aware of in the community. One main channel is patients who refer patients. These always benefit the doctor. Dr. Baker will also be part of a local health club and other local charitable organization. These additional distribution channels will contribute to the education and knowledge of Dr. Baker’s services and abilities.

Basis of Competition

The competition in this market is not extremely tough, but will require a certain type of patient to come into the office. Dr. Baker will treat anyone who is a candidate for care, but will also focus on the pediatric and geriatric population. The other chiropractic offices in the area are family and cash based. In the small town of House Springs a persons name and what they are known for can create the main competition. This is why Dr. Baker will be joining local organizations in the House Springs vicinity.

Competition Profile

With Dr. Baker he will be able to provide activator adjustments for the pediatric and geriatric patients. This will allow him to treat anyone who comes into his office. The baby boomers of today are not getting any younger and will be moving into the geriatric stage of life over the next ten to twenty years. This giving Dr. Baker a competitive advantage. With the pediatric patient Dr. Baker is able to instill a healthy lifestyle early so that children know what is correct for their body. This will allow them to also continue care into the future as they get older and create families.

With in a 20 mile radius there were 257 listings for chiropractors. However, many are based outside of a 5 mile radius. Only 3 clinics reside with in the 5 mile radius. Additionally a lot of the additional chiropractors are located in Eureka, MO. This is around 8 miles from House Springs and is a much bigger city located near highway 44. ()

Customer Profile

Currently 11% of the population uses chiropractic care. The tipping point has been considered when 34% of people begin using chiropractic care there will be increased acceptance and usage. The people who use chiropractic care today are considered innovators and early adopters. With a smaller percentage of the population using chiropractic care there is a lot of room to grow.

Target Market Profile

There are 4,450 people who are considered the optimum age for chiropractic care with in the House Springs zip code. () Dr. Baker plans to work outside of the optimum age marketing to additional groups including the geriatrics and pediatrics. The House Springs area includes many different types of people; including the new families just beginning to the baby boomers who are retired.

The largest population present in the House Springs zip code is the Middle America main stream family. (mybestsegements) These families have a median income of $40,000 per year. These families are large families living in small homes. The age ranges are younger than 45 and consist of people who own and rent houses.

The third largest population consists of people who do not have kids and work doing different occupations. They range from the ages of 35-54. These people normally have their own home and are single.

To target the Middle American family Dr. Baker will have spinal screenings near or inside local supermarkets and Wal-Mart when available. This may consist of setting up multiple booths to have a small health fair at the local stores bringing additional healthcare professionals together. Additionally Dr. Baker will hold health lectures that focus on children’s health and staying young. These are topics that parents and older people will have an interest in.

Pricing Profile

Pricing will be as follows:

Adjustment $40.00

Acupuncture Graph $20.00

Acupuncture Treatment $45.00

Modalities (Muscle Stim) $15.00

Initial Exam ($35.00)

Patients may pre-pay and get a percentage of additional credit by doing so. If paying $500.00 (5% credit), if paying ($1000.00 there would 10% credit given), and if a patient purchases $1500 in services they receive 15% credit. These credit may be used fro anything in the clinic.

Gross Margin on Products/Services

Operating profit for Chiropractors in 2006 was 13.7% according to the RMA. Dr. Baker’s practice will be a cash practice. Products and supplements sold at the office will have an average mark up of 50%. This will allow for additional profit in addition to the services offered.

Market Penetration

Distribution Channels

Dr. Baker will have a press release in the local paper of House Springs. At that point he will investigate to see when town hall meetings are and see what organizations are located in his area. He will be choosing one to join and possibly join other organizations.

Dr. Baker will also network market through realtors and family. He will also go to the schools and offer to help out in health classes and or have an assembly about health and have more than just himself present for this event.

Sales Representatives

Dr. Baker will be doing a lot of the selling, however the CA will be the closer or complete. The CA must have a positive approach to things. The CA will complete the sale and collect payment.

Advertising and Promotion

Yellow pages will contain the name, address, and phone number. This will be the free listing. Dr. Baker will have Marlene Trice create a news release followed by a TV news story. This will be free advertising and promotion. Marlene Trice has had experience in news releases and knows who to contact for TV news stories. Dr. Baker may also speak in front of over 200 real estate investors during his first month of practice. The name of the group is “The WIN.”

Packaging and Labeling

There will be no specific packaging used, however supplements will be labeled from the manufacturer.

Service and Warranties

There will be no warranty on supplements or pillows. There will be a 3 day return policy on products that have not been opened or tampered with.

Trade Shows

Health fairs at local schools will be one type of trade shows that Dr. Baker attends. When available he will participate in festivals and events that allow him to be seen by his community. If there is no health fair currently set up in the House Springs vicinity, Dr. Baker will work with other doctors to create a health fair at a local store or venue. This will allow for the health care community to get to know each other and create referrals for the doctors involved.

Future Markets

Future markets are unlimited with potential. Some future markets that will be looked into include creating additional office space for an x-ray lab that would lease space from Dr. Baker. This lab would help to service the surrounding doctors that require x-rays, but do not want to have to send there patient to a hospital environment.

There is a possibility for a natural food store cooperative development as the area grows and the demand increases for whole foods and non-processed foods. This would allow patients to buy food and supplements, not offered at the clinic, at a discounted rate if they are patients of Dr. Baker. This would be controlled by a monthly card given out to patients.

Finally, gym memberships will be another cooperative agreement with a gym in the area. Patients of Dr. Baker would get a 3 month discount when first becoming patients and getting rehabilitating exercises.
