In recognition of this, the four Councils in the North Eastern Area (Antrim, Ballymena, Larne and Moyle local authority areas) led by Moyle District Council have launched the Family Business Programme. This programme is part financed by Invest Northern Ireland and the European Regional Development Fund under the European Sustainable Competitiveness Programme for Northern Ireland.The definition of a family business is as follows:“A family business refers to a company where the voting majority is in the hands of the controlling family, including the founders, who intend to pass the business on to their descendants”Family Businesses are vital to our economy and currently account for circa 75% of the SME’s in Northern Ireland and 50% of the employment in the private sector. The Family Business Programme plans to hold a Family Business Conference at the Bushmills Distillery on Wednesday 2nd of October 2013 to discuss these challenges and present solutions, templates and guidance on how these challenges can be addressed. This will comprise of a key note speech from Family Business expert, Feargal McCormack, Managing Partner at FPM Chartered Accountants, and also a case-study from a successful family businessman who will discuss the challenges and solutions that he has encountered in building up his family business. There will also be an opportunity for a one to one session with a family business expert to help identify the key issues in your business and develop an Actions Plan to address these.In addition to the Conference, intensive support will then be available to 20 of these local family businesses, each of whom will receive up to ?5,000 of FREE support to assist them become more sustainable and to realise their growth potential, whilst addressing the key issues specific to family businesses. Each of the 20 businesses will receive the following support:oA business audit to fully appraise each family business to determine issues to be addressedoSpecialist one to one mentoring with a family business expert (up to 7 days per family business)oCompletion of a bespoke family business Strategic PlanoCompletion of a family succession planoCelebratory conference at completionoOn-going support over the duration of the programme This tried and tested approach creates a clear path to business growth and also creates clarity for all family members regarding their own roles and future in the business. For business owners who feel that they need to take stock of their own family business and create a plan for growth moving forward, this programme offers the ideal starting point. “Family businesses experience unique challenges and this programme is aimed specifically at helping those involved in this sector to spend some time talking, thinking , debating and planning for the future based on issues they have faced in the past. This high-impact programme will help to ensure that those who take part continue the success in the family business into the next generation” said Margaret Craig Economic Development Officer for Moyle District Council. This Family Business Programme will offer family owned or managed businesses located in the Antrim, Ballymena, Larne and Moyle council areas with the opportunity to improve their business performance.”The Family Business Programme will be delivered by FPM Chartered Accountants, assisted by Brilliant Red Consulting and Venture-i Networks, bringing together a team with vast experience in working with family businesses and helping them maximise their growth opportunities.
