English Learner Institute at MIDDLESEX COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Program Information SUMMER 2021

The English Learner Institute is a non-credit program that focuses on developing basic English and skills essential to American culture such as technology, life skills, and social conventions. Anyone who is a newcomer to the United States or needs to develop their basic English skills is suitable for this program.

The English Learner Institute is only offered at the Lowell campus as non-credit courses at a reduced rate when compared to credit courses. The courses offered through the Institute vary in length: 6-weeks, 7-weeks, 8-weeks, and 14-weeks and will be offered online (virtual) due to the pandemic. The courses are non-sequential which allows students to enter at a variety of points during the year. Students who are taking an online class are required to have access to a computer and Wi-Fi connection. Online classes will be held using ZOOM video conferencing

Admissions

The English Learner Institute is open to all and therefore, does not require an admissions application. Students must be at least 16 years of age to take coursework at Middlesex Community College. Prepare to Attend College requires a personal interview and approval of the staff in the International and Multicultural Office.

Course Descriptions

IEL100 - Prepare to Attend College (PAC)

This non-credit program is an educational starting point for potential college students. The course combines Basic English instruction with college and career counseling. An interview is required for a seat and this course meets for 42 instructional hours. There are two levels of classes being offered: beginner and intermediate levels. Both will be held virtually using ZOOM video conferencing. Cost of the course is: Free. Each student will need to be purchased a set of books for the class.

IEL101 - Holistic English-Part Three

The course combines Basic English instruction that includes reading, writing, grammar, and listening skills. Topics focus on knowledge needed to live in American society in relation to technology, careers, daily living skills, and consumer information. This non-credit course meets for 24 instructional hours. Students who are taking an online class are required to have access to a computer and Wi-Fi connections.

Cost: $150 not including textbooks.

IEL102 - Holistic English-Part Four

The course combines Basic English instruction that includes reading, writing, grammar, and listening skills. Topics focus on knowledge needed to live in American society in relation to technology, careers, daily living skills, and consumer information. This course does not repeat material from IEL101. This non-credit course meets for 24 instructional hours. Students who are taking an online class are required to have access to a computer and Wi-Fi connections.

Cost: $150 not including textbooks.

These courses are not pre-requisites for the ELL credit courses and students who wish to begin the ELL credit courses must take the ELL Placement Tests.

***Payment is due the day of registration***

Refunds:

When a student drops or withdraws from a course, processing, instructional and other costs must still be met by the college.

Therefore, refunds for official withdrawals from noncredit courses are as follows:

● 5 or more business days prior to start of course 100% refund

● Less than 5 business days prior to start of the course and before first class meeting 50% tuition refund

● After course begins NO REFUND.
