To Pimp A Butterfly Unit TO PIMP A BUTTERFLY Spring 2015 PROJECT PART I: Creative Presentation The “To Pimp A Butterfly Project” represents the culmination of your studies on oppression. This project asks you to synthesize (or bring together) your understandings of oppression, racism, sexism, the media, justice, privilege, and the other themes we’ve explored this year. The way you demonstrate your understanding of these ideas is completely up to you! Your goal is to create something that brings awareness to these issues, helps other understand their importance, reflects your new understandings, and shows what you’ve learned this year. The primary text that we’re using as inspiration for this project is To Pimp A Butterfly, by Kendrick Lamar. However, the secondary texts that you might use for inspiration include The Bluest Eye, by Toni Morrison and The Absolutely True Diary of A Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie. Please choose one of the following presentation formats: Cartoon / Comic illustration Drawing / Painting Hip-hop / Rap / Lyrical performancePoetry / Spoken-Word / Slam performanceMusical / Instrumental performanceInternal Monologue / Soliloquy / SceneInterpretive DanceiMovie / Film / Documentary / TrailerNewspaper Magazine3D Set DesignBoard Game Video GameAdvertisement You are encouraged to combine several different formats if possible. The piece must be at least 3 minutes in length (to perform, read, or explain). The piece must include a visual component of some kind. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box! Be creative with both form and content. Avoid the typical PowerPoint presentation! Here are some questions to help you think about the content of your project:What is oppression and what are its root causes? How are prejudice and bias created? How do we overcome them? How can literature serve as a vehicle for social change? When should an individual take a stand against injustice? What does power have to do with fairness and justice? How does labeling and stereotyping influence the way we understand the world? What does it mean to be invisible? (for oppressed people)What allows some individuals to take a stand against prejudice/oppression while others choose to participate in it?What kinds of oppression do people experience when the collective voice of society tells them they must adhere to white standards of beauty? What is beauty and how should it be determined? How can we redefine beauty for ourselves and others? What happens when we allow society to determine our self-worth?Why do some people “internalize” the oppression they experience? How does the media perpetuate institutional oppression of certain groups? How can institutional oppression lead to internalized oppression (self-hate)? Here are some questions to help you think about the form & purpose of your project:How does your presentation call attention to the topic / theme / problem?Does your presentation aim to evoke an emotional response or is it purely informational? How is your presentation engaging, informative, powerful and creative? Why have you chosen this particular issue? Why should others listen? How is your project part of the solution instead of the problem? How will you document or share your work with others? physically? digitally? In what ways can you become an advocate for social change surrounding this issue? In what ways can you engage in direct action? To Pimp A Butterfly Unit TO PIMP A BUTTERFLY Spring 2015 PROJECT PART II: Meta-Text Reflection After the submission of your critical lens essay and creative presentation, you will write a 1-2 page reflection paper that addresses the following: Questions to ConsiderDiscuss the process of designing and presenting your creative project, explaining (3) aesthetic choices that you made.
