Suggested Lesson Plans for Fair Trade Scheme of Work

Getting Started : Raising Awareness of Fair Trade

Begin with an assembly – Justino Peck Powerpoint – How the First Fairtrade Chocolate came to the UK. (On CD rom with this pack)

Year 1 Poster Designs. Children can design a poster to advertise our school fair-trade coffee afternoons. Maybe use digital camera and use teachers as celebrities to help promote fair-trade.

Year 2- Game. Children play the “Go Bananas” game from Oxfam or see Journey of a Banana PowerPoint (on CD rom with this pack). Use fair trade ingredients to make Welsh cakes for the fair trade coffee afternoon.

Intermediate: Teaching the concept of Fair Trade

(fair trade lessons will be taught during the week to every class in the school from Reception – Year 6)

Reception - LLC, Creative, Physical, PSE

Charlie and Lola, Bean to Bar Dance and Making Fair Trade Mobiles

Teacher will read the book “But I do know ALL about Chocolate” (Charlie and Lola) and help the children to understand where chocolate comes from and how Fairtrade helps cocoa farmers. In groups the pupils will then undertake a variety of activities:

• Make fair-trade mobiles (colour versions on CD rom)

• Play fair-trade snap with fair-trade snap cards (colour versions on CD rom)

• Colour in the fair-trade logo

• Use role-play area to buy, sell and shop with fair-trade produce.

• Make stick puppets to accompany the story book.

Y1 Art – Introduce with Fairtrade products and show the logo.

Pupils to undertake a variety of activities:

• Use fair-trade fruit and vegetables to print onto the fair-trade logo

• Pupils to undertake the bean to bar dance from the Charlie and Lola story (colour versions on CD rom)

• Colour in fair-trade pictures of a fair-trade farm and produce.

• Complete a fair-trade wordsearch (see Fairtrade Foundation Quiz)

Y2 Music – Introduce the lesson by singing the fair-trade song “If you want to make a difference shout Fairtrade”. Pupils can add their own actions and instruments to the song.

Pupils can then view the PowerPoint from the CAFOD website entitled “Anna’s Shop”. Discuss the images and what we can do as consumers to support fair trade. (on CD rom with this pack)

Use the smart board to play “Fairtrade trolley” to identify fair-trade produce and put it in the trolley. (See .uk/primary/fairtrade to find the game.)
