US TRADE SHOW INFORMATION

The following US trade shows are primarily wholesale trade shows. Some of these shows have limited retail selling in select locations of the shows. Some shows also have designated areas for export or FOB selling. In general, the best US wholesale trade shows for ethnic designs and artisan-made products are the New York International Gift Fair and the California Gift Show. However, other shows are useful marketing venues for targeting specific product categories, regional buyers or specific design styles.

Gift Shows -

New York International Gift Fair

The New York International Gift Fair is the largest wholesale gift show in the US in terms of the number exhibitors, the number of buyers (approx. 36,000) and the volume of business conducted at the show. It is a strong wholesale selling venue for artisan-made products, particularly in the “Handmade” sections of the show. The NYIGF is a temporary exhibition space and is open only during market days.

➢ Make sure to check out Artisan Resource

:

There is an unprecedented demand for handmade and artisan products in US gift, home and accessories markets today. Artisan Resource at the NYIGF is a production-sourcing venue for overseas artisan enterprises to showcase their products and production capabilities at export terms from the country of origin. Artisan Resource connects US-based importers with international producers and exporters. Artisan Resource exhibitors have experience in meeting export demands and are selected by their commitment to design innovation, cultural preservation, social enterprise and sustainability.

California Gift Show

The California Gift Show is a highly regional market that draws about 18,000 customers primarily from California and the southwest. It is especially known for its “World Style” section featuring many one-of-a-kind and ethnic, artisan-made products. The California Gift Fair combines both temporary exhibitions and permanent showrooms in both the Los Angeles Convention Center and The California Mart. The majority of the show and the highest attendance are found at the temporary exhibits in the LACC.

Atlanta International Gift Fair

By square footage of exhibition space, this show is the largest in the US gift market. It is the leading show for the southern and southeastern regions of the US. Traditional product designs are more successful in this market than contemporary or artisan and ethnic designs. The Atlanta International Gift Fair has both temporary and permanent showrooms. Temporary spaces are open only during market week while permanent showrooms offer daily hours for the local design trade.

San Francisco International Gift Fair

This gift show attracts approximately 16,500 buyers making it comparable to the shows in Los Angeles and Dallas. It draws mostly regional buyers. Artisan-made and one-of-a-kind products have reasonable good results in this wholesale show. SFIGF is primarily directed toward temporary exhibitions. The San Francisco Mart is also open during market, but is primarily used by designers.

Chicago Gift & Home Market

This is a regional show that draws customers from the Chicago area and throughout the mid-western United States.

Dallas Super Mart

This show draws buyers primarily from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas (TOLA.) The Dallas Super Mart is held in the Dallas World Trade Center and Trade Mart buildings. Traditionally this market has been focused on permanent showroom spaces and temporary spaces are not the highlight of the market week.

Miami International Gift & Decorative Accessories Show

This show draws primarily Florida based customers. It is an important show for beach resort buyers and ethnic products with a Caribbean or Latin style.

Furniture shows -

International Home Furnishings Market and Market Square, High Point

These are the largest and most popular furniture and home accessories shows and showroom buildings in the US. The Market Square location is the best venue for hand-made accessories and features some one-of-a-kind, artisan-made products.

International Contemporary Furniture Fair

As its name suggests, this show specializes in contemporary furniture. It is also a good venue for contemporary design home accessories. It attracts approximately 17,000 buyers, and is held in conjunction with the National Stationery Show in NY.

Las Vegas World Market

The Las Vegas World Market is a cross-category market with a primary focus on home furnishings and decorative accessories. This is quickly becoming one of the leading home furnishings shows in the US and competing with High Point.

Other specialty shows-

This show attracts approximately 15,000 buyers and specializes in stationery, desk items, small gifts and toys. It is held in the same venue and at the same time as the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in NY.

Accessories Show

New York & Las Vegas

The only wholesale trade show focusing only on fashion accessories. The NY show attracts over 22,000 buyers. The Las Vegas show is growing in size and attendance. Products include fashion accessories and jewelry for the mass and mainstream markets. Exhibitors are both US and foreign companies.

Museum Retail Conference & Expo

(Locations change yearly)

The Museum Stores Association holds an annual conference for its members. The conference includes seminars on key issues for museum stores and a trade show for the museum store buyers. This show is a good venue for suppliers of hand-made “ethnic” products. Participation in the MSA Expo is based on a lottery system. Space is limited and exhibitors are not guaranteed a location form year to year. Membership in MSA is open to all and allows access to the MSA mailing list (fee service) for marketing purposes.

MAGIC

Originally a menswear show, MAGIC now comprises one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of fashion companies in all categories into one market in Las Vegas, Nevada.

ACRE – American Craft Retailer Expo

ACRE is a wholesale craft show for American Craft producers. May 2007 was the inaugural show in Las Vegas. ACRE is a division of a web seller of American Craft products.

Sante Fe International Folk Art Market

This is a unique retail market with a small amount of wholesale buying. This market features 100 master artisans from around the world for a 2-day market open to the public in Sante Fe, NM, a town known for fine crafts and folk art. Approximately 50,000 visitors come to this market, making it a lucrative sales activity for most artisans.
