DECIMALS - Windsor C-1 School District

DECIMALS

add or subtract

line the decimal points up. Then add or subtract

EXAMPLE: 3.4 + 3.55

would line up like this 3.4

+ 3.55

NOT 3.4

+ 3.55

DECIMALS

multiply

1st: forget about the decimal points and just multiply like usual

2nd: count the number of spaces that are behind the decimal points in the problem

3rd: put the sum of the spaces in your answer

EXAMPLE: 1.3

x .2 3 do not line up the decimals

3 9

+ 2 6

.2 9 9

1.3 has one place behind the decimal point and

.23 has two places behind the decimal point

1 place + 2 places = 3 places behind the decimal point you must have in your answer.

EXAMPLE: 1 .42

x .92

2 8 4

+1 2 7 8

1 2 9 6 4 = 1. 2 9 6 4

there are four spaces behind the decimal points so I need four spaces behind the decimal point in the answer.
