California Veterinary Practice Act Acknowledgement

I, Participant's Name , a veterinary student of the UC Davis School of Veterinary medicine, have read and agree to abide by the following sections of the California Veterinary Practice Act as they relate to registered student organization (RSO) club activities. Further, I understand that for the purposes of these sections:

(1) A student is considered a junior student once they have successfully completed all courses in year 2 of the curriculum.

(2) Section 4830 only applies to students as part of the formal curriculum delivered by the university, it does not apply to tasks that students volunteer for outside the formal curriculum i.e. students undertaking surgery or diagnosing or treating outside the formal curriculum even under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian are in violation of California Veterinary Medicine Practice Act.

2027: “A junior or senior student or graduate of a recognized veterinary college listed in Section 2022(a) who is performing any animal health care task in a veterinary premises registered by the board may perform only the identical job tasks with the identical degree of supervision by the supervisor as specified for the R.V.T. pursuant to Section 2036.”

2036: “An R.V.T may perform the following procedures only under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian and when done so pursuant to the direct order, control and full professional responsibility of the licensed veterinarian:

(1) Anesthesia induction by inhalation or intravenous injection;

(2) Application of casts and splints;

(3) Dental extractions;

(4) Suturing of existing skin incisions.

Unless specifically so provided by regulation, a R.V.T. shall not perform the following functions or any other activity which represents the practice of veterinary medicine or requires knowledge, skill and training of a licensed veterinarian:

(1) Surgery;

(2) Diagnosis and prognosis of animal diseases;

(3) Prescription of drugs, medicines or appliances.

4825: It is unlawful for any person to practice veterinary medicine or any branch thereof in this State unless at the time of doing so, such persons holds a valid, unexpired, and unrevoked license as provide in this chapter

4830: 4825 does not apply to (e) Students in the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of California or the College of Veterinary medicine of the Western University of Health sciences who participate in diagnosis and treatment as part of their educational experience, including those in off-campus educational programs under the direct supervision veterinarian in good standing as defined in paragraph (1) of subdivision (b) of Section 4848, appointed by the University of California, Davis, or the Western University of Health Sciences.
