14. William (Mayd)4 Mead (Richard3, Reynold Reginald2, Thomas1) was born 1592 in Lydd, Co Kent, England, and died Abt. 1663 in Stamford, Fairfield Co, Connecticut. He married Martha Philippa Kilvy 1625 in Lydd, Co Kent, England. She was born 1604 in Lydd, Co Kent, England, and died 19 Sep 1657 in Stamford, Fairfield Co, Connecticut.

Notes for William (Mayd) Mead:

Information from:

1.

William Mead, born 1600 in England, sailed from Lydd County, Kent, England in April of 1635 on the ship Elizabeth. With him were his wife (whose name is unknown), at least three children, and possibly Gabriel Mead, who was the ancestor of the Mead family in Massachusetts. William first settled 1633 at Wethersfield, and later moved 1641 to Stamford, CT, where in 7 Dec 1641 he was assigned a home lot and five acres.

2. From an email by Beverly: "If you want to bring your information up to date you purchase or go to the library and locate The American Genealogist (publication), Gordon L. Remington wrote the best and well documented data regarding William Mead and his ancestry. The article is named "The English Origin of William Mead of Stamford" Whole number 289 January 1998 Vol. 73 No. 1. Regards Beverly Mead Freund of Takoma Park, MD."

3. Jan 2011: Changed his birth info from Kevxander's site. Notes from his site.

"William Mead is believed (KH: falsely, it has been established) to be the brother of Goodman "Gabriel" Mead. [Proof cited was the fact that the "coats of arms of the two are identical."] Both came from England on the ship Elizabeth (Captain Stagg) which sailed from Lydd, County Kent, England, to Massachusetts in 1635. Gabriel was born in 1587 and died March 12, 1666."

"Gabriel Mead remained in Massachusetts and is the ancestor of the Massachusetts Meads. William, however, followed the tide of emigration, which at that time was toward the Connecticut Valley. The first English settlement of Connecticut was made at Windsor in October, 1633, and another settlement was made at Wethersfield soon after where William Mead probably first settled, and in 1641, he removed to Stamford with several others from Wethersfield."

Notes for John Mead:

The family of "Mead" is from From: Robin's Genealogy Page:

Her Main Source: The History of Genealogy of the Mead Family by Spencer P. Mead, 1901

John was born about 1634 in England and came to Connecticut with his parents in 1635 as a very small child. John and his brother Joseph moved from Stamford to Hempstead, Long Island, and from there to Horseneck, Fairfield Co, Connecticut. John died 5 Feb 1699, probably in Connecticut. John was one of seven original proprietors of Greenwich, Connecticut.

"On February 5, 1664, the Seven Proprietors made a formal request to the General Assembly in Hartford to be allowed to separate from Stamford and to support its own minister and lay out its own lands. The Seven Proprietors were John MEAD, Jonathan RENALDS, John HOBBY, Joseph FERRIS, Joshua KNAPP, Angell HUSTED, and Jeffrey FERRIS.

On May 11, 1665, the General Assembly in Hartford declared Greenwich a separate township, and authorized funds for the hiring and support of an orthodox minister. In 1672, the so-called "27 Proprietors" bought land from the few remaining Indians to the west of the "Myanos River." This land became known as "Horseneck" because of the neck of land now known as Field Point was the common HORSE PASTURE. "

67. Timothy7 Mead (Jonathan6, John5, William (Mayd)4, Richard3, Reynold Reginald2, Thomas1) was born 22 Apr 1701 in Horseneck, Fairfield Co, Connecticut, and died 1790 in Greenwich, Fairfield Co, Connecticut. He married (1) Martha Weeks 28 Feb 1723 in Greenwich, Fairfield Co, Connecticut, daughter of Phillip Weeks and Martha Hoyt. She was born 14 Dec 1703 in Greenwich, Fairfield Co, Connecticut, and died 1769 in Greenwich, Fairfield Co, Connecticut. He married (2) Sarah Boulton Abt. 1770. She was born Abt. 1710.

Notes for Timothy Mead:

2005: Most information is from this website:

He married Martha Weeks, most likely in Horseneck, 28 Feb 1723. Spencer Mead does not record when Martha died and Timothy remarried Sarah Boulton, so it is unclear who was the mother of which children. In 1754, Timothy moved with his family to Nine Partners, in Dutchess County, New York. He moved again fifteen years later, at the age of sixty eight, to Rutland Co., VT, with six of his children (now all in their thirties). His sons Zebulon, James and Ezra settled on Otter Creek, in West Rutland. Spencer Mead states "these were the first white people that ever settled in Vermont." The Thralls did not arrive until twenty years later.

Aug 2009: Harold's site.

"Timothy Mead, the fourth son of Jonathan, who was the fourth son of John, was born in Horseneck, but moved from there with his family before 1754 to a place called Nine Partners, from the first settlers who were nine in number, in Dutchess County, New York, and located a few miles from his cousin, Nathan.

"During the year 1769, Timothy with five sons, Timothy, Zebulon, James (Colonel), Stephen, Ezra, and one daughter, emigrated from Nine Partners to Rutland County, Vermont. Three of the sons, Zebulon, James (Colonel) , and Ezra, settled on Otter Creek, West Rutland, between what is now known as Mead's Mills, or Centre Rutland, and Sutherland Falls. These were the first white people that ever settled in Vermont."

This is wrong on many details. Timothy Mead first appears on the tax rolls in Crum Elbow, part of Nine Partners, in 1743, and he was chosen one of the "overseers of the high ways" there at a general meeting 7 April 1747. He appears on the tax list (after 1762 it's called Amenia) through 1778. There is no evidence that he went to Vermont, and there is evidence that those of his sons who did go went later and in separate parties . Rutland histories make it clear that Col. James and family were the first settlers in Rutland, but they came via Manchester VT; Zebulon arrived in Rutland in 1774; Ezra arrived at an unknown time prior to his death there in 1785. Timothy Jr. and Stephen settled in Manchester and do not appear to have gone on to Rutland.

Sept 2012: From Errol Bevan's website

"The Connecticut Society of the Sons of the American Revolution Captain Matthew Mead

Born 1734, died 1812; married about 1759 Mary Bush, who was born February 3, 1742, daughter of Justus Bush and Ann Hayes. Compiled by Raymond M. Owen, Jr., and Gladys Husted Rungee Owen, greatgreat granddaughter of Captain Mead.

The Mead (Meade, Meades, Mede) Family was an ancient and honorable English family. One of their ancestors had been a friend and physician of Queen Elizabeth and lived at the Court in Greenwich, England. Two brothers, William and John, sailed on Captain Stagg's ship, Elizabeth, from Lydd, County Kent, England, to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in April1635. From there they removed to Hempstead, Long Island, later to Wethersfield, Connecticut, and then to Stamford in 1641. John came to Greenwich in October 1660 and bought land of Richard Crab and others.

His descendent, Captain Matthew Mead, was commissioned Captain of the New Company or Train Band in the Town of Greenwich at the May session of the Connecticut General Assembly in 1773. At a special Town Meeting held March 11,1777, he was appointed a member of the Committee of Safety and Inspection together with Joshua Ferris, Robert Peck, Nehemiah Mead, Thaddeus Mead, Lieutenant Seth Palmer, and Gershom Lockwood. The Town voted to send for the "six four-pound cannon and shot for the same" which had been granted to it at the November 1776, General Assembly.

Captain Matthew Mead's Company served under his older brother, Lieutenant Colonel John Mead, the commanding officer of the Ninth Regiment, Fourth Brigade, Connecticut Militia, comprised of various companies located in the towns of Norwalk, Stamford, and Greenwich. John had been offered a Captain's Commission in the British Army by King George, but turned it down to serve in our army, becoming a full Colonel in May 1777 and a Brigadier General in May 1781.

Captain Matthew Mead's Company had John Knapp as Lieutenant, Isaac Howe as ensign, six sergeants, and thirty-one privates, a total of forty men in all, to protect Horseneck. This was the First Detail. The Company, which was ordered to New York in 1776, took part in the Battle of Long Island August 27, 1776. The First Detail served during the months of August and September, and the Second Detail served during October, November, and December 1776 and January 1777. Captain Mead served with his men in both Details, whose composition was not identical. In the Second Detail Captain Mead had Isaac Howe, ensign, seven sergeants, two corporals, and twenty-five privates, a total of thirty-six.

He was in one of the last regiments, under General Israel Putnam, in the retreat from New York City to Harlem (Washington Heights). It has been said that during the retreat General Putnam with 4,000 men was left as a rear guard while the main army under General Washington took a position on Harlem Heights. When General Washington heard that the British General Clinton had landed in New York September 19, 1776, he sent a hurried order to General Putnam to evacuate the city and join him on

Harlem Heights. Putnam was ignorant of the route leading from the city, and his aide, Aaron Burr, offered to guide the troops. He got lost, and Captain Mead's Company suffered losses in a skirmish with the pursuing British Light Calvary.

After the retreat they were posted on Harlem Heights and remained there until the Battle of White Plains on October 28,1776, in which they were engaged and suffered considerable losses. After the battle the Connecticut General Assembly ordered the Ninth, Tenth, Thirteenth, and Sixteenth Regiments of Connecticut to march to the Westchester border and place themselves under the command of General Wooster. Later the State regiments under the command of Colonel Enos and Colonel Whiting relieved them.

On December 19, 1778, Captain Matthew Mead was again, with six others, made a member of the Committee of Safety and Inspection. This group was to check the guns, ammunition, and food supplies for those who remained in Greenwich and to see to their safety.

During the Revolution Greenwich was a burr in the side of the British. General Tryon called the people of Greenwich "swamp rats" because after they attacked British supply ships on Long Island Sound and were pursued by warships, they disappeared into the swamps and small bays on the Connecticut shore. On more than one occasion small boats fled across the shallow sandbars where the pursuing enemy ships went aground, to the great amusement of the natives who gathered on the shore to watch.

The British General Tryon made his historical raid on Greenwich February 26, 1779. He had three objectives: the Cos Cob salt flats, the raiding fleet of small whaleboats, and the horse farms. The possible capture of General Putnam was an added inducement. General Putnam, however, made his famous escape down Put's Hill.

At the time of Tryon's Raid, Captain Mead's house was situated on the Post Road to the west of Mead Tavern (corner of Putnam Avenue and Lafayette Place) with an old house in between. By the end of the war Mead was a Major. He died in Greenwich in 1812 and was buried in his wife's family (Bush) vault, which was where the Greenwich Boys' Club is now located. The vault and its remains have been moved to Putnam Cemetery, where it is today.

The children of Captain Matthew Mead and Mary Bush were Matthew, Justus, Bush, Charity, Rachel, Betsey, and Ann. His grandfather was Constable John Mead, born about 1658, died May 12, 1691, whose marriage to Ruth Hard(e)y was the first marriage recorded in the Town of Greenwich October 27, 1681."

The historian at Norwich was using 1727 as his year of birth also, and he is buried across the street.

""If you look at the date of death on Jonathan's tombstone you would have to agree that his year of birth would be 1735/36. If you accept 1735/36 as his birth year then he cannot be the oldest son of Jonathan Mead and Sarah Husted but the youngest. "
