MyMathLab Website:

MyMathLab Course ID: neal08051

Prerequisite: MATH 61 (Pre-Calculus) or the equivalent

Course Description: We will cover material from chapters 2-5 & 7. The topics will include: functions, limits, and continuity; differentiation of algebraic, trigonometric, logarithmic, and exponential functions with applications; integration of algebraic, trigonometric, logarithmic, and exponential functions; and the definite integral and some applications, including rectilinear motion and average value.

Student Learning Outcomes:

1. Analyze and interpret a wide variety of functions using differentiation and basic integration techniques.

2. Solve applications using differentiation or integration techniques.

3. Understand the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.

Textbook: Thomas’ Calculus, 13th edition, by Weir & Hass. Pearson, 2010. The text for this class is optional. All homework will be done online using MyMathLab. Once you gain access to this site, an online version of the text can be viewed.

Other Supplies: Graphing calculator (cell phones, iPads, tablets, etc cannot be used as calculators), graph paper, and ruler.

MyMathLab: All homework will be completed online using MyMathLab. This is the only option for completing the homework assignments. You will need an access code to enroll in MyMathLab, which can be obtained in one of three ways:

1. Purchase one online at (this is the easiest way but requires a credit card)

2. Purchase the access code at the bookstore (you have to request it at the register).

3. Purchase a bundle at the bookstore, which contains the textbook and the access code.

Attendance: Attending every class period is very important. Missing classes can severely affect your grade.

If you decide that you wish to drop the class, it is your responsibility to make the drop official. If you miss a test given prior to the withdraw deadline date, you may be dropped from the course.

Grading Criteria:

Homework, tests, quizzes, and a final exam will be assigned points and weighted according to the following scale:

To Access Homework: Go to and login. On the left, click the name of the course. Again on the left, click Homework. Click on the appropriate chapter and begin. Be sure to save results! Homework is due 10 minutes prior to the start of class (i.e. 11:50 am) on specified days (see attached Course Schedule). There are a lot of homework problems, some easy and some hard, so do not procrastinate on doing your homework! Late homework will NOT be accepted.

Tests:

Tests are worth 100 points. Questions on the tests will be similar to those assigned on the homework or discussed in class, although some may be slightly more challenging. No make-up tests will be given.

See the attached Course Schedule for when tests are tentatively scheduled.

Final Exam:

The final exam will be cumulative. There are NO make-ups if the final exam is missed.

However, if your final exam score is higher than your lowest test score, then your final exam score will replace your lowest test score.

Assessment Procedures:

During quizzes, tests, and the final exam, all electronic devices must be turned off and put away (except calculators, when used). Anyone who cheats during a quiz or test (which includes, but is not limited to, talking, looking at someone else’s test, using a cheat-sheet, using a cell phone) will receive a grade of 0% (F) for that assessment and will be reported to school administration. Students will not be allowed to leave the classroom during a quiz or test. Students will not be allowed to share calculators, erasers, rulers, or other supplies during a quiz or test. If you arrive late to a quiz/test, you may start the assessment so long as no other student has turned in his or her completed quiz/test, but no extra time will be given at the end of class.

Academic Integrity: Each student is expected to do his or her own work on homework, quizzes, and all exams. Although it is acceptable to participate in study groups to help answer questions about homework problems and to help one another study for tests, it is unacceptable for another person to do your homework for you.

Behavior Policy:

Everyone is expected to be respectful and courteous of others. This includes, but is not limited to, turning cell phones off or to silent, not texting/checking social media during class time, and not distracting others by talking during lecture.

Accommodations: If you have a disability documented by a physician or other appropriate professional and wish to discuss academic accommodations, please contact the DPS office (652-6379) as soon as possible. Please be sure to allow adequate time to arrange an appropriate accommodation.
